Well it's not just going with proven tech, most of their stuff is originally derived from foreign hardware. It was in part a workaround for them to finally get new rifles. I've spoken to some guys who have used both while in Afghanistan the appreciated the IAR a lot more since it was lighter, new built instead of nig rigged together at this point, and much more accurate at range. Something that matters a lot in the bizzaro world of long range firefights you see in Afgahnistan. I remember on the guys stating that with the IAR if in a stable shooting position you could dump an entire 30 round mag in one burst and have it all go into the same window at 600m. He may have been exaggerating a bit, bu, that amount of accurate long range suppression on a fire team level is outstanding.
