What was the "Fortunate Son" of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq?

What beats were they playing in H1s as they steamrolled through the desert?

Also Iraq 2003 thread.

Okay, this "Fortunate Son" meme needs to die. Of all the songs that were popular at the time, why have people latched onto that one - a protest song that shit all over the war and everyone who fought in it - as the anthem of Vietnam? Actually, I know why - because a bunch of (((Hollywood producers))) who were burning their draft cards and smoking dope while far better men than they were at Hue and Khe Sanh have made sure that song is in every movie and TV show ever made about the war because even now, all these years later, they still have the same sneering contempt for those who went off to fight instead of staying home and watching Laugh-In.

All of you ought to know better.

This

I had a 'nam war vet for a history teacher, I never asked him a question like this directly but on a field trip we took to a memorial center he brought a few of the friends he served with and they all had a conversation on music, one said "where have all the soldiers gone" was the unequivocal song of the war, another said it was "white rabbit", and another said "nowhere to run" was it. On of them said "don't fear the reaper" (1976, I know, he might've been going a bit senile)

But my teacher, he never put his two cents into that discussion, until later in the year when we got around to talking about casualties. He offhandedly mentioned that he can't hear "wild horses" by the rolling stones without tearing up, but quickly changed the subject like he had said too much.

Who knows.
>>

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone with actual contempt for a Vietnam veteran. Most people, if they feel anything these days, feel pity and remorse. It was seen as a horrible injustice to Americans, forcing them to fight such a shit war for a shit purpose in a shit country for a shit people. Things were only made shittier by the bleeding heart leftist cunts back home, but they hate everything anyways. They were protesting the war when Allies curb-stomped Hitler and delivered a dual nuclear suplex to Japan.

It was particularly bad because most of those soldiers were drafted; they didn't have a choice. I feel less remorse for the Iraq vets who come home and bitch about their experience, because frankly they chose to be there. No one forced them, and that makes a difference.

Yes, and the reason you can is because once the passions of the 60s died down a bit, the left realized they'd taken a huge hit to their reputation with middle America (the people who elected Dick Nixon - twice) with the "baby killers" angle they'd gone with during the war. It was only after that experience that they came up with the "we support the troops but not the war" angle.

Also, people tend to forget that the songs that were monster hits at the time were often ones that haven't really stood the test of time and become classics. Go onto Wikipedia and look up what the #1 hits of the Vietnam years actually were - a lot of them will surprise you. Who remembers B. J. Thomas or Tony Orlando and Dawn? They were HUGE in the mid-60s and had #1 hits, whereas Jimi Hendrix is technically a one-hit wonder because he only ever had one of his songs reach the Top 10.

What people appreciate from an era in retrospect is often not what was popular during that era itself.

As war songs go, this one is underrated. After the French government sold the Foreign Legion out by agreeing to Algerian independence, the Legion had to abandon Camp Zeralda, which had been its headquarters for a century, and move back to France itself. The Legionnaires did as ordered, but on the way out, they wired the whole thing with explosives so the Algerians wouldn't have it. As they marched out for the last time, they did so singing this - the title means "I Don't Regret Anything", and the original was sung by Edith Piaf, whose father had been a career soldier and who was a vocal supporter of the Legion. As the last truck was leaving, the detonator was pushed, and the camp collapsed in smoke and rubble.

>back to /pol/ with you and your fantasies. It's a damn good song and as American as you can get.
Jimi Hendrix had been 101st Airborne, his songs are way more iconic of that era, and they don't shit on the military.

For me it's because I grew up with that same aesthetic in the 90s. One of mom's boyfriends was an MP and I got to drive around in a woodland HWMMV all the time. I remember watching the 3 volley salute every memorial day and scrambling to get the spent brass from the A2s.

>It was in that mel gibson movie too
If you mean "We Were Soldiers", I doubt it. WWS was set during the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965; Fortunate Son was released as the first track on the B side of the album Willy and the Poor Boys four years later in 1969, so that would have been a total anachronism. Billboard's #1 song for the week the battle took place was this, which frankly ain't bad at all:

I don't know how I feel about this.
