It's called mature technology. Every alternative is really just a sidegrade at this point.
You can't force progress. Yes, you can throw money at smart people who will explore other possibilities, but you still gotta wait for that breakthrough and paradigm shift to actually happen, dawg, and you can't predict it.
Except small arms are such a low priority now that nobody's doing the money throwing, so unless someone just happens to stumble upon a new, insanely better way to design affordable hand-held devices that can project lethal force at great ranges, we're stuck with AR variants.

The AR was based around a few key ideas

1. lite weight weapon
2. lite weight ammo
3. controllable recoil

It also has rather accurate for a assault rifle design even if that was not one of the goals of it.

There was ideas that people believed would cause it to be outclass or at lest have a more limited role. Bullpup rifles, caseless ammo, PDW, etc. None of those have really worked out very well.
