What if America had never dropped the bomb and invaded by land? If that would have happened we would have seen casualty numbers spike for the Americans. This operation was named “Downfall”, by the United States military in its planning phase. This operation was pushed heavily by the Army, the American Airforce and Navy had the better strategy of blockading Japan, destroying it with bombs, and starving the population out. If they never surrendered, the thought was that the nation would rip itself apart. Obviously none of these plans were used, but if the United States Army did invade homeland Japan, it would be a bloodbath. If the generals had been smart ,they would have used the same strategies that worked so well on Iwo Jima. They would try to maximize American casualties, even if it meant their death. Every Japanese citizen would be called on to fight the invaders. We would see little girls and old men with knives, if no guns were available. Banzai charging American troops. This would dishearten American resolve, but not enough to make them give up the fight. Americans would be forced to fight with extreme prejudice because they would not know who was a combatant and who wasn't, due to the nature of the invasion. We had been fire bombing japan mercilessly, with the same effects as nukes.
We also had to show russia they couldn't take japan like they did eastern europe (russia was preparing to mount an offensive).

I have read quite a few books on this subject as I am a massive weeb degenerate. The climate in japan was bad but not bad enough for the people not to do these suicide attacks. Read about what the civilians on the more populated islands did when the americans came, they killed themselves by cliffs or banzi charges. The japs were recruiting kids at the end of the war as Kamikaze pilots and foot solders as young as 9.

I think dropping the nukes was the right decision in hindsight. If the US decided on a ground invasion it is very likely that soviets would have too and Japan probably would have ended up partitioned like the Koreas.
Less likely but still possible:
Had the US not dropped the bombs, we could have been looking at a Versaille-Germany 2.0 where Japan resented their defeat and tried to rearm and continue their imperial aims after the US pulled out.

Alternatively, if the US did invade the mainland, the protracted and likely bloody fighting might have hardened American opinion against the Japanese leading to a "De-Imperializing" (think the De-Nazifying program in Eurostan) and a similar mainland to today (assuming the US didn't end up in a long and costly Iraq/trashcanistan occupation/insurgency). In this scenario the Sovs are still going to seize a ton of formerly Jap controlled territory in SEAsia leading to a likely very different cold war.

I think overall the decision was the best for the US and its aims as well as if not the best, one of the better options for the western allies as a whole.
