I do homekill twice a year, I just use 30/30. If you can get them into a headbail you could possibly use a 22. Not worth the risk though. And 30-06 is overkill, if you do use it just shoot the head side on.

Have put down bovines and know .22lr works. They may have thick skulls, but reality is that bone makes a very shitty armor - especially from close range at 90 degrees.

They have small brains though so any shot has to be properly aimed, or it'll miss the brain and leave the creature dazed etc. instead of dead. Any saying that a some small/smallish x caliber is incapable of killing a bovine is due to missing the brain, or an extremely rare case of snub load - the former being most likely.
