Remington 870 shotguns are good if they're from 10 years ago, look for an old one on armslist or in pawnshops. Current ones are infamous for rust, broken ejectors and shitty fit and manufacture.
Otherwise there are other good old-fashioned pump guns you can look for, like Winchesters and Ithacas.

S&W Model 10s are alright, incredibly ordinary double-action revolvers in .38 Special, they're nothing amazing (by modern standards), but there's also nothing wrong with them, it's six shots roughly on par any typical 9mm pistol and it's fast to repeat with, it's enough to matter.

With a Model 10 and an 870 (assuming it's an older one), you wouldn't be poorly armed by any means.

>Current ones are infamous for rust, broken ejectors and shitty fit and manufacture

You're an idiot with no personal or first hand knowledge of what you speak. You're regurgitation the same anonymous claims from countless clueless fucks.

The fact is base on the number of shotguns manufactured by Remington the % defective product is marginal. That and the shotguns are probably used well beyond what they were designed for. For example the Remington 870 Express was not designed for heavy duty but for recreational hunting/target shooting. You want the top of the line, get an 870Police with a machined (non-MIM like in Express) extractor, and stronger trigger springs.

All this "quality control" nonsense started when people got butthurt that Remington was acquired by Freedom Group, a subsidiary of Cerberus, ie, DA JEWS, in some backward attempt to put out inferior quality gun and thus sour interest in purchasing firearms as part of Black Obama's master plan to take yer guns. Yeah, that's some logic.

He's not wrong about newer low-end 870's. The 870 express, the cheaper model, has a MIM extractor, which are known to be shitty. The Police model however has a non-MIM extractor. So if you get a Police you should be okay. Can't speak for the rust thing though, as my 870 Police was made in '03. I picked it up for 300 at a show here in central Fl, and it's a great shotgun.

870's of today are shit but the old police ones, I hear, were good.
The best pump action shotguns ever made were made by Winchester.
>>
You'll get a fantastic firearm that needs refinishing, most likely.

Southern Ohio Gun is a good place for both of those items.

MIM isn't even bad, Remington doing MIM is bad because they don't care about QC to make sure the parts don't come out shit..
>>
>>33804937
I'm sure QC being ass is more than just a meme and I'm sure that explains the upswing in complaints about the MIM parts. But again, I've never owned a new 870, only an '03 Police with non-MIM, so I wouldn't know. Is that yours in the pic?

Remington defense force is go!

The police ones are good, Remington still puts effort into those. The expresses are the ones with all the major problems people talk about, the rest are just overpriced but well made. And yes I've owned several, the express always had rust problems even in the 90s.

Am I better off with a newly made police gun or one that was in someone's squad car in the 90s?
>>
>>33805237
Squad car gun.

If it looks ratty you can have it refinished and you have a solid weapon. Don't let ru-Remington lay their sticky fingers on it.
>>
>>33805237
They stayed pretty consistent, although a wingmaster from then is the best. Some police shotguns rode in the slot in police condition their whole lives and didn't see much use. Some of them saw more use than a 19th century London prostitute. It's up to you to find one, but ordering online you will get a random one. It's really best to physically inspect one, but worst case you just replace a few parts that are still in production.

fine and dandy if you don't mind a little surface rust and a worn stock
>>

Well, I won't argue with Hickok, and I'm by no means shit talking a good Winchester, but the Ithaca 37 is my favorite gun.
>>
>>33805520
forgot to mention, got mine from Summit Gun Broker for $210, best purchase ever... it's from 1972. if you search on plebbit/r/gundeals you'll see that you can snag some pretty regularly from various shops for around the same price
>>
>>33805542
That's cool.
My first gun my was bought for me by my Dad, a Winchester 1300.
I now have
120 (made 1989)
1897 (made 1941)
SXP (made like 2013?)
And that 1300
Still need a defender and model 12

If Winchester made 9mm handguns in the states, like a cz 75 clone or something, I don't think I would own anything but Winchesters.
>>
>>33805677
Speaking from experience, you want the 12.
>>
>>33804411
Model 10's are great I see them pop up on Armslist all the time. When dealing with Smith revolvers it's always preferable to get ones made before 1982 which have pinned barrels and recessed chambers. These are known as pinned and recessed and have slightly more value in the SW market. Buds gun shop used to have used police Model 10's, I'm sure someone on the internet has them for the 3-400 range easily. The heavy bull barrel ones are extremely low recoil also

Honestly post-82 revolvers are alright too, the question of a keylock is a more serious issue to me (not that you'll ever shoot loads in .38 Special which are hot enough to break it or make it engage by itself, but it's just annoying that it's there).

I got an 870 Tactical, and it has no problems whatsoever.
I made it better by getting a forged extractor, aluminum follower and stronger dog spring, all of which cost maybe $50 to get pretty much an 870 Police for way less cash than just buying one.

>>33804937
That same picture has been going around for years now, and I haven't seen any others complaining about it.
>>
>>33804411
I have one. It's fine. Got it from an Ohio State trooper who got to buy his service weapon when they rotated vendors. Has a flying tire roll mark on the receiver even.
>>
>>33805963
Oh of course they're still awesome guns and quality as fuck. I just meant as far as the market for Smiths the P/R just have that additional umph appeal.
>>
>>33806147
My buddy bought an 870 and the ejector broke almost immediately which I would take as an anecdotal fluke if not for all the stuff I've read and heard just like this thread.
They're junk.

Got an 870 express in 2015ish, no problems whatsoever, hundreds of shells through it with zero malfunctions, no rust.
The fit on the furniture is kinda shit, but it's mechanically solid. Idfk what the deal is.

I'm happy for 870 owners that have had no issues. Are they still coming with mom extractors? The extractors were/are definitely known for breaking.

What kind of shells do you run through it I'm thinking about getting one for dove, goose, turkey. I've always hunted with my dad's old wingmaster 870 but it only takes 2 3/4 size shells I want one in 3 1/2 so I can shoot all shells through it
>>
>>33806732
MIM (metal injection molding) is a manufacturing process like any other, how well it turns out depends on how good you are and how much attention you pay to quality control, just like forging, investment casting or stamping.

Remington thinks QC is hard so that's why their MIM extractors break.
Meanwhile, looking at Smith & Wesson, or even Colt, they use a fair amount of MIM parts and it's never bad.
>>
>>33805067
Are you fucking retarted? Re-read his post
>>
>>33806787
That's fair but I was asking if Remington fixed the problem, so if they're still using mim is there any word on if they're better?
>>
>>33804842
Literally ALL of the new 870s are rusting on the racks at my local Cabela's

>>33806761
I mostly just use 2 3/4, with the occasional 3". Been thinking about picking up a 3 1/2" gun for a while now
