Were swords worn in scabbards over the shoulder only during transit? How would you draw/sheath the blade behind your head without fucking up?

you pretty much have to take them off to draw them. It would be done when climbing, or when your sword was to long to be worn practically on the waist
>>
You would draw your other sword, or your mace, dagger etc.
>>
>>33793505
You don't generally see swords back mounted on a battlefield, it's pretty much transit like you said.
You get there and depending on the sized you either heft the bare blade around on your shoulder or have it in a scabbard.

Drawing a sword from a back scabbard is hard to do.

Two handed swords, like the Scottish claymore were primary weapons and were carried bare. Usually resting on a shoulder, maybe in a back scabbard.

Edo period prints, artwork, and sources aren't really the best sources for period Samurai.

Considering the romanticism of Japanese history began at that point.
>or when your sword was to long to be worn practically on the waist
It's harder to draw a longsword from your back. You literally lose arm room fast.
>>
>>33793505
If a sword was on a person's back and they had to draw it, they would take off both the scabbard and sword before drawing the sword

>It's harder to draw a longsword from your back. You literally lose arm room fast.
That's irrelevant, he's not talking about drawing the sword, he's talking about carrying it. A big enough sword cannot be carried at the waist.
>>
>>33793505
Ever try drawing a sword longer than your arm? It's easier off the back if the scabbard isn't secured on the bottom
>>
The only way I could see it working practically is if the side of the scabbard wasn't actually sewn shut, but had weak magnets holding it closed. They would be strong enough to prevent the sword from falling out during transit, but all the user would need to do is tug on it with correctly applied pressure, and they could reasonably pull it free in a spinning swing. Still fairly impractical, but fucking magnets, yo.

That actually sounds pretty cool.

True some sources talk about nodachi not being sheathed at all, though its hard for me to believe it was purely artistic license .

Under normal circumstances a long sword could not quickly be drawn. High ranking warriors had the benefit of having pages would would carry various weapons for them.

Big swords were usually not carried on the body at all, though, and certainly not in scabbards, since they were mainly battlefield weapons and not for personal defense. They would just stuff them in their wagons, or for shorter trips just maybe hold them (possibly leaning them over the shoulder).
