No. Russia would probably. Few warm water ports and those that exist are heavily guarded and narrow.


I mean a naval landing in the USSR would be a lot difficult than now, Russia's coastal defenses are dead to non-existent. But the Soviets used to have a whole branch of their navy dedicated to fending off amphibious landings. It wasn't equipped just with AShM launchers but also tanks, BMPs, artillery, aircraft, etc..

Anyway if the US put 2-3% of their GDP just to building subs they'd produce a far more formidable force than Germany.

Not really. Russia is massive, but only a relatively small area of the country matters. You don't need to take central Russia, in fact, you would be much better off pretending it didn't exist. If you invade the primary economic sectors (the West bordering NATO/Europe), and the port cities to the East, you effectively checkmate Russia. The stat thrown about needing these tremendous armies, is one meant to illicit the cost of taking and holding the entirety of Russia. The single largest country by leaps and bounds, but, it is a wasteland by and large. Just as a lot of Eastern China is just fucking terrible, and they can't do anything with it. That's the problem with these big countries, they have a ton of land but nothing of strategic or economic value on them. Resources are great and all, but unless you have some way to support accessing them -- it counts for shit. Even the countries in the ME try and do everything they can to jam as many people as possible into the slightly less shittier areas, or along the coast.

This is also one of the big reasons why America became so dominant. It's huge, but nearly the entire country (aside from sections of the Mid-West as a result of mountains, and deserts) can not only be easily accessed, but populated, and contribute to the economy.
