It was designed for defensive war in mountainous terrain, as well as crew survivability. Its low profile when hull downing means that it won't get hit very easily. To compensate for the lack of a turret it has some fancy suspension stuff to help the gunner aim.

>>

no... just no, the main reason it looks like it does is because it was a way to get good armor protection while keeping the weight down and tactical mobility up. There is more to it than that so if you want to know more there is this article on the subject

The Finns are actually even crazier than that. The chassis was from a BT-7 light tank and they mounted a British 4.5" howitzer on it. The produced vehicle went by the designation BT-42 and they knew it wasn't that good. But as always, they had to make do with what they had at the time.

Nah, they just strapped it onto their improvised armored train, the "Krajina Express"

Which in itself was a crazy conglomeration of stuff they had lying around, like a German Flak 38, 40mm Bofors, some mortar's, a couple rocket launchers the aforementioned M18, and a field gun or two. All bolted onto a train armored with gravel and rubber sheets.

The thing actually saw a fair bit of combat, and even withstood a few RPG's.

I tried knocking on this thing's front with my fist to see if the claims that it had zero frontial armor were true. Now usually with an AFV you get returned by the flat noise of your knuckle beating against what might as well be concrete, but the front of this vehicle made a noise similar to hitting an old car. It's a tin can.

>After a over a year of fighting, the US has pushed the Red Army forces all the way back across Germany, and now fight to retake Berlin

>0800, June 19, 1946
>Just inside the city limit of Berlin, Germany

>Two T30s and three M26E1s of one of America's numerous newly formed Armored Heavy Assault Divisions roll past numerous burned out structures
>All is quiet as the commander of the lead M26 scans ahead of him, supporting infantry following behind the column
>Two flashes, one less than a second after the other, are seen about 800m ahead
>The second tank, a T30, is hit first. The round bounces off the mantlet
>The second round hits the turret ring of the lead M26, instantly killing the gunner and commander
>Infantry scatters as the surviving crew of the stricken M26 abandons their vehicle.
>The now lead T30 commander identifies a bunker at the end of the boulevard, occupied by a pair of 100mm Mod.1944s
>Another shot rings out, this one hitting a structure to the direct left of the T30
>The Commander gives the order to fire.
>A deafening roar and a massive fireball scream from the muzzle of the 155mm T7

>The unit, in their haste, soon outpaces their infantry support
>Passing by an alleyway, the lead T30 trundles carelessly into sight of a well hidden T-34/85.
>The T30 Commander orders the driver to move the vehicle
>The massive tank careens into the opposite curb and into a structure as the T-34 fires
>The tank is hit, propellant cooking off as the crew hastily abandons their vehicle
>A second later the ammunition detonates, sending the colossal turret flying into the building with the force of a crashing aircraft
>The T-34 is dealt with quickly as the infantry moves up, easily flanking the hidden tank.
>However, by now a second tank, an IS-3, has rolled into the path of the armored column
>The tank fires, the D-25-T cannon tearing a hole through the number two M26, directly into it's upper glaces
>The second T30 rolls around, using the wrecked M26 to cover it's hull as it opens fire.
>The 155mm HE shell the front turret face of the IS-3
>The tank's mantlet is torn off and the turret itself pushed back on the hull.
>The driver’s hatch implodes from the force of a direct 155mm HE round hit.
>What crew members that aren't decapitated by the force of the impact are subjected to a swarm of metal fragments flying around the inside of the vehicle
>Having not seen the tank brew up, the crew of the T30 fires a second shell, this time one of the newly designed armor piercing rounds

>A T28 sits in a well hidden position in the hills overlooking Taegu.
>Below a company of M24 light tanks waits for the enemy attack. Two of their vehicles had been detached to provide flank security to the assault tank.
>Just before dawn, a low rumble rolls across the horizon to the northwest.
>In the valley below, tank crews and infantrymen scramble for cover as the North Koreans send another preparation barrage into the city.
>The T28’s commander watches as 122mm, 130mm, and 152mm shells land in clumsy groups across the city, several lucky shots hitting their target of the densely packed American tanks.
>Several Chaffees are outright destroyed by near or direct artillery hits, the explosions illuminating the dying night.
>The thunder slowly rolls up the hill towards them.
>Moments later the tanks’s position, as well as everything else within several hundred meters, is saturated with artillery fire.
>While a direct hit would be deadly, the splashes of large-caliber artillery shells around the vehicle do little more than scratch the paint and dent the winches for the vehicle's auxiliary tracks.
>After several minutes the barrage stops.
>From his position, the T28 commander can see a company of T-34-85 tanks and dozens upon dozens of North Korean infantrymen descending from the opposite hills onto the shellshocked armored unit below.

>In the valley below, a North Korean infantryman pauses as he hears the deafening sound of metal tearing into metal.
>Twenty meters to his front, the HVAP round tears into the turret ring of the T-34, out the bottom, and lodges itself in the earth blow, kicking dirt in his face.
>On the hill, the Commander confirms the kill as the tank rolls to a halt and the crew piles out, his loader pushing another round into the breech, this time a T13 APCBC round.
>They fire again, kicking up dust as this round screeches towards it’s intended target.
>The shot penetrates another tank, this time at a nearly flat angle to its sloped upper glacis plate.
>The vehicle’s driver is practically liquified as the projectile passes through his chest before it’s filler detonates.
>The tank’s turret is blown off, red-hot fragments of armor plating maiming and killing surrounding infantrymen.
>By now the Americans in the valley are fighting back in full force, although the 75mm gun of the M24 struggles against the larger opponents.
>Intending to further even the odds, another T13 is loaded.
>The round is fired, this time striking the right track of a T-34.
>The vehicle jolts violently as it’s wheels are jammed, the metal just enough to set off the round’s fuze.
>It detonates, killing any infantry near the vehicle, and sending splinters of it’s casing through the thin side armor of the tank.
>The vehicle’s loader and gunner are shredded below the knee, and the remaining crew quickly attempts to abandon their vehicle as the force of M24s hose them down with machinegun fire.
>Several T-34s spot the flash from another round, and begin pulling back to lob rounds up at the massive vehicle in the hills above.

Probably would have been an amazing tank. Just thinking about the scenarios makes me sad it never happened.

>Stationed along the Korean DMZ, able to get into fighting positions quickly whilst retaining good gun
>90mm light tank zerg rushing NVA in 'Nam
>Able to fight in the Golan where the Patton was too unwieldy and heavy and is able to compliment Centurions

last one for now
>1945: The Soviet’s first public display of the IS-3 heavy tank sends a wave of panic through Western tank designers, prompting a decades-long race by these designers to match
>1951: the British Army sought to up-gun the venerable Centurion series of tanks. At first this was through the FV4004 “Conway” program, and then expanded into the FV4005 Stage I and Stage II program.
>1955: Impressed with the massive firepower of the 183mm gun that the Stage II could bring to the battlefield in a fully traversable turret, the vehicle is standardized as the FV4005 “Claymore” and placed on a limited initial production run of 150 vehicles.
>1956: With relations between NATO and the Warsaw Pact degrading, Soviet forces amass along the the borders of various western-aligned nations.
>After weeks of failed negotiations, Soviet forces make their move, pushing their main armored assault assault into germany.
>However, seeking to destabilize the still fragile economy and morale of the UK, an amphibious assault is launched by Soviet Marine forces along the island nation's eastern coast.
>Within a week the majority of the UK’s home guard has fallen back to major cities, allowing the Soviets to push from Norwich to Gloucester, isolating London from the rest of the nation while more soviet armor comes ashore every day.

>May 14. 1956: Outside of London, England
>It has been two weeks since the Soviet invasion.
>British forces hold out around this last bastion against a large Soviet force.
>1st Troop of the 10th Royal Haussars, Special Weapons Field Test Squadron D, equipped with newly delivered FV4005 “Claymores”, sit on the northern outskirts of Windsor, their backs to the Thames river.
>In London’s northern areas, fighting still rages between British and Soviet Forces.
>The Squadron HQ is trapped in the city but still transmitting orders.
>2nd, 3rd, equipped with standard Centurion Mk.3 tanks, have been wiped out.
>4th troops, using early prototypes of the Mk.5 Centurion, fare little better against the lumbering Soviet IS-3M and T-10 heavy tanks within the narrow streets of London.
>The night before the Soviets had made a hard push along this northern flank, tanking the city of Slough.
>With no way to ford the river, and as the only operational heavy armored unit between London and the Reading pocket, the Heavy Tank Destroyer Troop must survive this thrust or risk a Soviet force taking London’s western flank.

>The sun peeks over the eastern horizon, the already aglow from the fires that blaze throughout London
>Scouts have reported at least two companies of Soviet IS-3M and T-10 heavy tanks pushing their position.
>These are accompanied by an unknown number of T-54/55 tanks, as well as a small reconnaissance detachment of PT-76 light amphibious tanks.
>As the crew of the Claymore unit’s command vehicle finishes their morning tea, an explosion rattles the ground around them.
>the fields ahead erupt into fountains of earth and fire as hundreds of rockets land haphazardly across the Claymore’s line.
>The barrage slowly creeps forward, marking the ground with craters as the Soviets attempt to soften up the unit of unknown strength between them and the Thames.
>Fragments of rocket casings plink off of the relatively thin armor of the four FV4005s, this barrage being the limit of their armor protection’s ability.
>The barrage ceases, medics outside immediately moving up to tend to wounded infantry.
>Speaking via the vehicle’s telephone, the Troop commander orders the exposed soldiers back.
>As he speaks, the first tanks are spotted.
>Eight soviet T-10 heavy tanks roll out of cover and into the open field.
>The russians know there will be resistance, but expect it to be only light. It’s a bold move, and it shows the waiting British troops the full scope of the enemy’s heavy tank force.
>Sighting in the first target, 1 Troop vehicle number 2 rolls into her prepared firing position
>Seconds later, vehicles 1, 3, and 4 are also in position.
>Vehicle 1 sights in the central T-10 in the thrust, while the remaining three bracket the oncoming “V” formation
>The radios in all four vehicles buzz with static.
>”Hold… Hold… Fire!”

>All at once four 183mm cannons unleash a hellstorm of fire onto the advancing force.
>A round hits the lead T-10 just below the gun mantlet, the plastic charge deforming around narrowly exposed turret ring and hull roof.
>It detonates, crushing the tank’s frontal hull and prying the turret clean off like an explosive wedge
>The second round misses its intended target, the 7.2” explosive projectile instead striking the pitted earth at one of the soviet tank’s side and exploding, crippling the heavy tank’s track but leaving it otherwise unharmed.
>Rounds three and four strike the two left-most vehicles in the formation.
>One detonates beneath its target, lifting the 52 tonne vehicle several feet off the ground before leaving it with it’s pike nose buried in the dirt.
>The other spreads it’s plasticine payload across the cheek of a T-10’s turret.
>Upon detonation a swarm of metal fragments leaves the interior of the vehicle looking like one of the Jackson Pollock paintings that had taken the world by storm during times of peace.
>With three tanks knocked out in spectacular fashion in just over a second and another left immobilized and stunned, the T-10 unit finds itself without a commander and descending into panic.
>Behind them, the second wave of IS-3 tanks have already began their push.
>In the confusion, the PT-76 force that was supposed to cut off any British soldiers attempting to cross the Thames begins their push.
>1 Troop Vehicle 3 spots the light tanks as they slide down the river bank and into the water.
>The vehicle rolls back as the cannon is loaded, turning it’s turret to face the new threat. The shot is fired, missing all three PT-76s
>However, the round detonates underwater almost directly next to one of the light tanks.
>The vehicle’s hull is crushed one one side, and the resulting wave capsized another.
>The remaining light tank is quickly dealt with by infantry.

>Meanwhile, the troop commander watches as five IS-3s join the shattered T-10 formation.
>An additional force of T-55s join in as well, adding another six tanks to the push.
>The order is given for all tanks to fire at will.
>Another shot rings out, this round slamming into the turret roof of one of the older IS-3s and collapsing it like a cooling souffle.
>One shot strikes the hull front of a T-55, the explosion sending a shotgun blast of fragments through the crew compartment, setting off the ammunition and causing a catastrophic explosion that would soon become the hallmark of Soviet tank design.
>Another T-55 is hit in the roof as its commander rides out of his hatch.
>The force of the strike against the hatch pushes it closed, cutting the unfortunate tanker almost cleanly in half before exploding and finishing off the rest of his crew.
>The fire is terrifying but low in volume, and soon the Soviet tanks begin firing at the Claymore’s position.
>Vehicle 2 is struck by a 122mm HEAT round, killing two crew members and forcing the rest to bail out as it begins to burn.
>With smoke and fire giving them away, the FV4005s only increase their rate of fire.
>Tank after tank falls in spectacular fashion to the devastating barrage, but the Soviet advance is too much to handle.
>After fierce fighting, the Troop is pushed back and back, and soon enough the sole surviving vehicle has her treads up against the riverbank.
>The call is made, the tank’s commander screaming out the back door of his vehicle for men to find any cover they can before he snatches the radio back up.
>”Blue Danube! Blue Danube!”
>High overhead an Avro Vulcan picks up the call and authorizes, banking sharply to respond.
>With battered Soviet forces advancing on the equally worn out British, the defending troops do their best to dawn their primitive protective equipment.

>The weapon’s yield is 20kt, leaving a crater 100 feet deep and over 300 feet across.
>The Soviet attack’s rear echelon is vaporized, and several vehicles lagging behind are picked up and thrown like toy cars.
>British troops avert their eyes to avoid the blinding flash.
>When they open them, all that remains of the attack is a mushroom cloud rising above the scarred earth and the remains of a dozen or so russian tanks, smoking as their paint is burned off.
>The cloud of radiation drifts up towards Cambridge like a radioactive lance through the heart of the main Soviet push.
>As one of the first nuclear exchanges of the war rumbles through the earth, Troop 1 calls to its commanders, who watch from inside the embattled city of London as the fireball rises into the sky.
>”For Queen and Country, London will not fall.”
>The radio goes silent as the sole Claymore advances with it’s remaining infantry, rolling towards the smoldering crater to face down the remainder of the devastated Soviet force.

I'm aware of the work, but I can't say I'm particularly interested. As you can see, I'm more focused on the technology. The idea for these little stories actually came from the "what if?" bits of My Tank is Fight! It's a good read in itself, although definitely not meant to be taken too seriously.

The only vehicle that might match that description would be the Type 60, by virtue of being small and silly looking.

Many psot-WWII Japanese tanks did/do use hydropneumatic suspension, allowing them to peek and kneel like the Strv-103. The tank you're likely thinking of is the Type 75, although both the Type 90 and Type 10 also have this capability. Notably, the K1 and K2 Black Panther tanks of the similarly mountainous South Korea also have this feature. It's allegedly very useful in mountainous terrain, although I don't believe any of the aforementioned vehicles have ever seen combat.

Yes and No.

It was built about a year before the Sherman realy got production rolling. The first "production" Ram tanks were being built while the Sherman was being prototyped.

The Ram was developed from the M3 Lee with it's stupid sponson gun. It was used to train Canadians how to drive tanks and later was used as an APC with the turrets removed.

It was actually for testing the idea of a tank having two guns instead of just one.

The conclusion was that you had a tiny increase in your chance to hit on your first salvo (since you could fire twice in the same time a normal tank can fire once), but the engineering costs of putting two guns onto your tank made it not worth it. You will notice, for example, that those guns are not in a turret, which turns out to be a pretty big bummer.

My commuter tank:

>Wildy jump from lane to lane
> Soccer moms and no funs yelling about emissions and to get off the road
>Engine is too loud so I can't hear.
> Every intersection turns into a hazard zone as I plow my way through
>fucking no funs fucks. Everyone should have their own tankette.
>Find local carshow and "Carbomb" it by putting my tankette on display
>everyone is confused.
>Drag it to Carmax to get it appraised the fifth time for shits an giggles.
>They're wanting to call the cops. I smash through 2 other cars before I make my escape
>Make it home
> forget to go to grocery store
>fuck my life, there was a sale
