Not good at all. The SKS is a terrible rifle and was phased out quickly because the bayonet being in the handguard was a terrible design since soldiers kept cutting their hands on them when they were folded in.

Custer holds an honored place in American history, but the Indian Wars themselves are largely forgotten. The last generation of army officers to fight against the Indians were the same who fought in WWI, which overshadows the Indian Wars. General Pershing fought against Apache Indians very early in his army career, but even then he is better known for chasing Pancho Villa into Mexico.

Custer is more of a mythological figure than a military figure. Yes, he was in the army, but he's more famous as a tragic figure who fell victim to his hubris and bravado. That narrative has really overshadowed his military identity.

As for how the Indian wars are viewed, the U.S. military of that time is so different than the current one, that for most people, there's a subconcious disconnect between the two. Yes, Americans know that the U.S. military fought the Indians, but we really don't associate it with our present armed forces bc the two are just so different. All in all, the Indian wars are viewed as a thing of the past that are only half-heartedly regretted due to how difficult it is to feel bad for Indians.

Maybe, but probably would have roughly the same outcome. Now, if they had AKs, that would probably win the fight.

SKS is nice, but the sheer outnumbering would have made the 10rd internal mag only so useful, where as an AK would be faster and easier to change mags, and 30rd mags would have really leveled the playing field. A couple 75rd drums wouldn't hurt either, as long as it's not those shitty Korean ones that barely work.

Look I'm not saying the Injuns weren't incredibly brave and brutal fighters, what I'm saying is I'm assuming the 7th Cav was a more disciplined and organized fighting force. Assuming lever repeaters and SKSs are basically equal, and the advantage of 3 to 1 defending vs attacking combined with being outnumbered 4 to 1, assuming all of the injuns had repeaters, it would have been damn close.
