So, I've got an interest in guns, and of course, being English I've never fired one, but a while ago I found this walking the dog, wondering if anybody could tell me anything about it, and what it could have been shot from.
To me it looks like weird size, to small to be a rifle round, and automatic and pistols are a rarity in England to say the least, so, what is it.
Bottom says F. N. M (a bankrupt Portuguese company) and 82-10.

Take a picture of the bottom and report back

Beat ya to it get pranked

Disregard i posted way too fast

looks like an FN produced 8mm mauser round. better ditch it before the bomb squad gets called on you and all of scotland yard shows up to search your home and blow it up out of an abundance of caution while putting you on a hateful terrorist watchlist
Looks like a 5.56 casing, but it could be some weird hunting round.
Something for scale would be nice. I know at least some people hunt with .223 out of bolt guns in the UK.
A size comparison would definitely help, OP.
It's not to small to be a rifle round. Looks like a .223, but I dunno.

edit nm, definitely a 5.56. your first picture is just so zoomed in it looked bigger to me than it was
>>33770112
FNM headstamp means it was made in Portugal.
FNM is a Portuguese company, this could be 7.62x51nato from some irish terrorist OP. Seconding the scale request.

Reported to the queen for thinking abouny violence.
>>33770180
Some pen I had lying around
>>33770112
The casing shape makes me think that it's some surplus 5.56x45.
If you measure the width of the top where the bullet used to be and the bottom, that'd help a lot to get a definitive answer.
I'm at work, but I've got a round of 556 here and a ruler.
>>33770228
What the fuck man... Put it next to like a ruler or cup or something that is uniform not some weird pen you got for free with the purchase of your favorite flavor lube.
>>33770228
Definitely 7.62 nato, made in Portugal.
>>33770112
that is 7.62X51 Nato, made in 1982, by Fábrica Nacional de Munições de Armas Ligeiras out of Portugal.
Identified by the FMH. And that it is Berdan, three star crimp with no primer sealant visible.

Portuguese 5.56. It's missing the proof mark though so I'm willing to bet it's from after they went out of business and were sold apart.
>>33770204
>>33770263
this, used to get it linked really cheap. haven't seen any in years
>>33770277
This. That fucking pen for scale lol.
>>33770112
Everyone in this thread is retarded.
It's a 5.56.
>>33770330
>>33770333
Yep. It's a 5.56x45.

5 messages to identify .223
And i dont even own a gun in that caliber.
>>33770330
100% it's a 5.56 x 45mm NATO
For you Brit, im 95% sure its a .223
Its just a less hot version from the 1960's
Same dimensions as the 5.56mm
So what are they used in?
>>33770405
It is the standard NATO round and popular for hunting as well, possibly the most common rifle round that exists right now.
>>33770405
For you it was most likely shot from a gun that looks like the one above. Used in hunting different kinds of pray
>>33770421
Dont forget us ~senpai
>>33770112
>to small to be a rifle round
Then it's 5.56 aka the manlet round
By manlets, for manlets.
>>33770405
Pretty much all of your militaries modern rifles and squad automatic weapons. l85/ar15/L11/L12
>people uniroincally think 5.56 or 7.62 is more popular than 12ga or .22lr
