The AK is very simple to teach somebody how to operate. Very good for conscript armies where you don't always have the resources necessary to properly teach marksmanship.

You'll notice that many countries that still practice universal conscription use AKs or AK varients (Finland comes to mind, along with the Israeli Galil). However, the sighting system used on the AK was already outdated by the time it was introduced. Simpler to learn, but has significant drawbacks.

Comparatively, the M16 is a precision instrument. Much lighter, and still more precise in the hands of a trained user than the AK is. Reliability has not been an issue in the real world (again, with trained users who know how to maintain their weapons).

If I need to equip a lot of people very fast, I'll issue AKs. If I have time to properly train people, I'll issue M16s or ARs.

M16 all day, if you own or have used both then you know that the M16 is built to an exact standard with incredible quality when compared to the AK. Yeah the AK has a bigger, more punishing round, but the trade off in accuracy is too much to justify taking that bigger round. When it comes to iron sights the M16 can be zeroed up to 550m for a point target with relative ease, vs the AK which has a max effective range of 400m for a point target but the iron sights aren't worth dick past 200m. The AK's sights just don't have the ability to be zeroed like the M16's. Despite common belief, the M16 is vastly more reliable than the AK due to the fact that it designed as a closed system vs the AK which is an open system. If you ever get the opportunity to see what the 5.56 and 7.62 can do to someones chest cavity then you will find out that the 7.62 has a higher chance of killing someone on impact, but the 5.56 has a much higher legality rate because of how the round was designed to tumble when it impacts a soft target. You may not get knocked to your ass when you take a zip from a 5.56 but you sure as shit will be dead within the next few hours unless you got a damn good surgeon on hand. M16 = accuracy, reliability, rate of fire, rate of follow up shots. AK47 = stopping power, requires less maintenance, beautifully simple to use.

AKs are idiot-proof thats why they are so popular. The potential accuracy advantage from the stoner gas system over a long stroke is in reality negligible unless you are taget shooting in which case you are still outclassed by target rifles.
You can go with a shortstroke AR as the compromise option but you will sacrifice potential accuracy and a lot more money.
If you simply like the AK design more there is always the AK 74 in 5.45 which ballisticly outperforms the ARs 5.56 but you will still have a long stroke piston juming back and forth and a shorter sight radius for irons but gain the possibility of a folding stock.
