How do I do the penny trick? I rubbed the brass of my bore snake on it and some rust came off but not all.

Is it possible the finish is bad there or something?

Also what do I get to prevent rust? I just use hoppes 9 on my guns is that not good?

The penny trick is easy, just find a penny from before 82, after that they used zinc not pure copper. Just take that penny, liberally coat the area of the gun in oil, and softly rub the penny (face down) on the rust spot until the oil is turning orange from the rust.

Then just wipe it down and repeat until satisfied. If you dont have the pre-1982 penny, anything 100% copper will work, just dont use a damn bore brush, those are too rough on the finish.

I am considering synthetic motor oil as a cheap all purpose clp alternative. I have heard good things about rust prevention from frog lube, rust prevent and a few others but gun centric products smell like snake oil to me.

i leave CLP over everything metal on my guns. I have a descant that dries out by plugging into the wall, hanging in my safe.

i shoot corrosive commbloc surplus 7.62x25 and x54r. I don't find rust on my guns ever. except for once on the gas block of my yugo sks. Though I had shot that rifle with "supposedly" non corrosive new production russian ammo, at a /k/ meet where it rained.

I dont know what to tell you about the damage to the finish. There are bluing kits or you can take it to be fixed by a smith. Otherwise it won't harm function and it doesnt look bad enough to make it unappealing. But its not my first gun, I would feel the same as you if it was.

So since that's the case I would recommend you take it to a shop and have them work their magic to buff and refinish it, if you want. But imo its not that bad, my first gun has worse things and I'm fine with it.
