Assembling my AR15 today, first one ever. I'm getting mixed information on what to use when assembling, grease or oil?
And if so what kind?
Grease on slow-moving parts, oil on fast-moving parts.
Or maybe it's the other way around

>this
Its one of the two. I think.

Oil the rifling to ensure maximum velocity.
honestly while assembling its not really a big deal

OP here, potterfield said grease on springs, oil on roll pins.
I have CLP for the former, but I don't know what type of grease for the springs
Honestly, I've always put roll pins in dry and never had a problem. Same with Springs(minus the recoil spring). Only thing I put lube on when building an AR is the threads for the barrel, muzzle device, and maybe the buffer tube. That's it. Everything else I lube up as I normally would when I clean the gun. As for assembly lube, I use either lithium grease or 15w40. Whatever is closest. I even use Lithium geasue for luring up my guns for shooting.

no need to be worry about it, AR15 doesn't need to be run soaking wet like some would have you believe. I used Aeroshell grease on threads during installation and besides the ALG Go-Juice that came with my Geissele trigger for the trigger group, I just use CLP on all the internals, cleaning every 2-4 range trips. >1000rds later and hasn't failed me so far.

What about where the barrel seats in the upper?

Not necessary in my opinion as the barrel extension just slips in. I would put some lube on the threads on the receiver for the barrel nut. Makes it go smoother and gives a better lockup and reduces seizing while you're torquing down the lock nut.

Awesome. Thank you for the help f a m.

If you are a hippy like me make sure to use cruelty free coconut oil.

just watch Larry potterfield build one on YouTube. you don't have to do everything he does, but he at least lays out what grease and lube and where.
then masturbate while watching him hand checker a shotgun.

Grease between the barrel nut and receiver.
