A long time ago I was on a German rocket ship which was visiting the city docks, In addition to the main armament which was icbm's, they also had a then state of the art fully automatic radar-based defense system that could pick down anything incoming that was bigger than a seagull. There were also a few cannons to deal with smaller threats. I was on an onboard visit and was shown the works. But I also noticed what turned out to be a recent addon; little machine gun balconies along the side. These turned out to have been added when they realised that technically the ship didn't have any defense against rowboats with hostile crews.

The common myths of Somali Pirates:

1.) They're evil. They are very poor, desperate people and even big hauls see them pay most of the loot to their overseers on dry land who take it for themselves

2.) They're skilled. Again, these are desperate people from poor backgrounds with no education. They struggle to take ships, even in successful captures. They're often too poor to afford shoes. The "throw glass on the ground" bit from Captain Philips is based on a real incident.

3.) They're brave. As they're simply desperate and looking for a means to make money, Somali Pirates don't have their heart in it and will flee at the slightest bit of resistance. Israeli reservists on cruise ships have driven them off, they would never attack a warship.

4.) They're heavily armed. They have AK's and maybe an RPG. That's it.
