Realistically, what would happen if a Somali pirate ship approached a US carrier group chugging its way through the Persian gulf?

What a faggotry! Doesn't the support ship have actual guns?

Why did the destroyer let them get so close? If any of them were suicide bombers they could have caused some damage.

I've lost track of how many military programs of record have been created just to deal with the aftermath of that incident.

The entire goddamn LCS program, just for starters.

There is no such restriction on a small boat approaching an underway carrier group.

It took a few minutes to destroy a small fishing boat that was barely moving.
Now someone explain to me how the fuck will a carrier group manage to successfully defend a carrier from a swarm of 50 to 100 speed boats filled with explosives.
>>

for starters those guys didn't have 5" guns with computerized fire control or CIWS turrets. secondly, you might be a retard.
>>
>>33728992

A carrier group would obliterate them in short order, but a Q-Ship might be able to take out a lone destroyer if for some reason a particular pirate wanted to kick up the bees nest that is the USN.

What would be the fallout of losing a destroyer to pirates?

Why would a somali pirate speedboat attack a military ship, never mind an armada? Not only are their strategy always to go for a non-defended but valuable target, their intel comes from spies in the merchant docks. While their bosses puts little value on the pirate crews it's a hassle to recruit, train, equip and arm another batch - why waste the investment on a target capable of defending itself when there are so many other?

>>
>>33737229
Lives lost were exceptionally low.

War costs are war costs but I would much rather fund the DOD then welfare. At least the shit DOD shits out gives me a warboner. The shit welfare fags shit out gives me hire crime rates and fiscal burden.

The US recoups said costs though business taxes and geopolitics. For all of the euros whining and faux superiority they know they need us.
>>
>>33737254
>hire

Higher*. But I'm currently a disgusting phoneposter, what do I know.
>>
>>33737254

Combat deaths were admirably low. Deaths compared with number of US soldiers were also admirably low. Compared with Vietnam the Iraq war was a walk in the park. The post 'liberation' period was costlier. So far the official numbers are a total of 4491 dead US servicemen, and the number of wounded is likely tenfold. But wohoo for Halliburton!
>>
>>33737292
Even post liberation is redicoulsly low.

As in, lower than the number of people who die yearly in the US....but over 10 years. Yeah yeah, those are mostly age related but you get the point. Statistically speaking half of those kids would be dead anyways over those 10 years if they did not even go to war. (well, of teenagers, best I got, but again, you get the point)

>But wohoo for Halliburton!

Nearly every damn company profited.
>>
>>33737317

Of course the companies profited. They knew they would, too. Which is why the war received top billings on all tv stations, and the flags never flew higher. And if the entire war had been based on 'let's stop Saddam from killing kurds' instead of 'let's pretend to grab Saddams non-existent WMDs and his non-existent AQ affiliates while we actually go for his oil' I would have applauded too. But I grant you, it is possibly this is tangenting slightly toward political issues. After all, USA had solid proof of all of Saddams wrongdoings.

With shit like this.

50-100 speedboats taking off with a singular goal takes a lot of coordination between people. That kind of cooperation is going to generate chatter that could be picked up by intel as well.
>>
>>33737349
Getting caught up on the "why" about killing a man that deserved it is silly imo.

The US Casus belli could have been that he killed the Tooth Fairy for all I care.

US has been checking off lists of people in the Middle East that have wronged them for a good 20 years now. Gaddafi was an anti american/west faggot, so was Saddam, so was Assad. Although Assad has escaped the bullet sorry due to Russia directly intervening. He gets to settle with decades of insurgency in a fucked to death burning pile of country.

People have this thought that the US should play nice with those who oppose us. I say let's be their huckleberry.

You want to be anti us/west? Fine. The us will be anti you.

Fuck Iran while we are at it. 444 days, never forget. They have yet to pay fully for that shit. Op preying mantis was just a taste of what two frigates and a gator can do.
>>
>>33737592

Noone's crying over Saddam, or Gadaffi, or over Assad when his time is up. Or over their goons. But these neat little wars tend to kill hundreds of thousands of civilians while we are at it, creating the hatred and determination fueling new conflicts and yet the only ones who actually profit from it are the companies a and their top leaders.

Don't get me wrong. I will fight and die for my country in its direct defense and I will not look down on anyone else who does so. I do not have as charitable view at the politicians and their corporate lobbyists who lead us into war. Especially when the 'defending our own countries' bit is very thin shaved indeed.
>>
>>33737406
The effectiveness of a swarm attack really depends on how determined the attackers are. Knowing the Iranians' steely resolve, they'll cut and run after a bunch of their buddies get cut down by 50's, M240B's and 25mm. And if there isn't an air threat (not likely, Iran likes their F4s), CIWS set to surface. Using Harpoons is kind of a last resort for swarm craft, as there are other threats that they are needed/more suited for.
>>
>>33736006

No it's a valid question. Those little skiffs got very close to the destroyer, if they were intent on ramming it they could have swarmed in. Maybe these 4 or 5 would have been sunk but a big swarm would have gotten through.
>>
A long time ago I was on a German rocket ship which was visiting the city docks, In addition to the main armament which was icbm's, they also had a then state of the art fully automatic radar-based defense system that could pick down anything incoming that was bigger than a seagull. There were also a few cannons to deal with smaller threats. I was on an onboard visit and was shown the works. But I also noticed what turned out to be a recent addon; little machine gun balconies along the side. These turned out to have been added when they realised that technically the ship didn't have any defense against rowboats with hostile crews.

Listen. It is decades ago. Plus, I had been drinking tequila with some of the sailors the night before - which is the reason I got invited on board - and I mainly recall the fantastic shakes I had as I went there. The name of the ship is gone. Well, actually it might have been the Karlsruhe. But I still recall that there was a hubbub because the ship was possibly carrying nukes which by law would have barred it from visiting our shores. How many silos they had I do not recall counting.

anyone have the pic of why sinking an aircraft carrier is a fucking god awful idea

The common myths of Somali Pirates:

1.) They're evil. They are very poor, desperate people and even big hauls see them pay most of the loot to their overseers on dry land who take it for themselves

2.) They're skilled. Again, these are desperate people from poor backgrounds with no education. They struggle to take ships, even in successful captures. They're often too poor to afford shoes. The "throw glass on the ground" bit from Captain Philips is based on a real incident.

3.) They're brave. As they're simply desperate and looking for a means to make money, Somali Pirates don't have their heart in it and will flee at the slightest bit of resistance. Israeli reservists on cruise ships have driven them off, they would never attack a warship.

4.) They're heavily armed. They have AK's and maybe an RPG. That's it.
>>
>>33743672
In a war scenario the "boat swarming" tactic would fall apart pretty quick due to USN helicopters. Each Seahawk can fire x8 Hellfire missiles if they wanted to, and those little rocket boats would be torn apart by them. As the Iranian air force would pose no threat to the US they'd be able to operate in waters freely.

This doesn't even take into account USN fighters or the supporting USAF aircraft and US Army Apache's that'd be operating in the area as well. A single apache would wipe out a whole armada of those speedboats.

Iran's whole anti-ship exercises are just political/propaganda shows
>>
>>33736560
To be fair, they were the French so there was a 50-50 chance of surrender.
>>
>>33743826
Oh yeah I know. They ran a few exercises and found that an A-10 can make pretty short work of the "speedboat swarm" tactic. That's even before we consider the CIWS, and ship mounted machine guns.
