There is a small chance they are more dug in than anyone can imagine. If the SK and Americans decide to attack it'll be a bloody slog all along the DMZ. If the NK attack they could probably take the entire peninsula in a week but it'll need to be fast or they'll run out of fuel and ammo. They could level Seoul in a couple of hours with artillery and bypass it and drive hard south. There's a chance China could see them winning and decide that's it's in their interests in seeing the SK fall and jump in with air support.

They most likely have dozens of tunnels into South Korea to carry out counter attacks and every single base is basically zeroed for artillery. The US and USSR made some smaller devices that could be buried in place back in the Cold War. Not really an innovation but an unexpected deployment of what nuclear arsenal they have. It's unlikely any ballistic missiles will reach their targets due to THAAD deployment. In that statistically anything is possible, but I think the saturation bombing ahead of the landing would be thoroughly devastating. It's extremely vulnerable to the Navy and launching from S.Korea we could just rotate bombers through there until we run out of bombs or fuel. As for the question OP, while there is a chance that Best Korea might be more prepared than anyone thinks, I'd say the odds of it being the truth are between "slim and none".

North Korea is a police state the likes of 1984 so while most of the people aren't completely brainwashed, they are too terrified of the regime to take a stand, and virtually all of them that do try to stand up for themselves end up executed or imprisoned, and their families punished along with them.

And the brainwashing is pretty intense too, when you step back from and examine it more clinically. They may doubt, but consider that they have nothing to compare their experiences of life in North Korea against. Aside from the black market of western media that gets smuggled in from China they have no contact with it at all, let alone meet foreigners in person or have access to the wealth of information through various news programs and the internet that we benefit from. I vaguely remember a quote from a North Korean doctor who who escaped the country, about how they were shocked when they finally made it out and found out the rumors were all true, when they saw a dog in china eating a better meal than they had in years. So essentially, the lies the regime has been feeding them are all many of them know, making it easy for many to believe that everyone else is doing worse than Best Korea, and is out to get them.
