hey /k/, i'm back off the cape route and headed back to the US. i posted last year when someone wanted info on maritime security, and i'm due back around beginning of May. just wanted to post back and say thanks for the book suggestions and because the thread(s) were really popular last year i figure i'd post back.

i'm coming off a long watch so i'm going to turn in, but if the threads up in 6 hours or so, i'll try and answer as many questions as i can before heading back out.

Fuck you, i hope you drown

Did you get to shoot at anyone?
>>
>>33726756
some fuckers off the mog coast had some rpg's tossed our way, that was pretty fucking exciting. also i had a MAG (?) bigger SAW looking thing without a heat guard for my trips from Liberia through to SA.

otherwise one encounter with speedboats and a mothership in the distance that fucked off with warning shots.

got a taste of guns in and around india for a bit since we did a smaller leg on bonded contract during an offload (basically while our big ship was in port, part of the security team had a smaller contract for escort duty) where we went up the suez and into the Med to deliver medicines and shit. was pretty quieting to see the coast burning for miles and miles, airstrikes at night, et c.

also Israeli chicks are super hot.
>>
>>33726750
how do get a job doing this? do they look for military experience?
>>
>>33726787
yeah a couple times. old DAG and SA ammo and what i'm pretty sure was steel cased Norinco yellow box stuff, but it had Radway L2A2 head stamps so i think they were counterfeit. that shit is everywhere in Africa now that China is buying out places for mineral rights and setting up shop. Congo is beefing with Uganda again because of warlords so supplies were easy to acquire if our purser didn't ask questions.
>>
>>33726820
generally you need between 4 and 8 years of leo/mil experience or some equivalent stuff on top of some certificates and training, then a sea card, and your port papers.

that's before you actually apply, but generally you can get sponsored for training prior to hiring if a company likes you enough.
>>
>>33726836

What kind of money do you make? And what are the hours/monthly schedules like?
>>
>>33726962
thisll be my last post before sleep

i generally make a little over 6 figures on my specific contract for the Gulfport to Mumbai route and a rider is often attached for a return route from Mumbai to Fremantle or Broome then on to Tainjin before heading back to SD or SF or through the Canal back to the Gulf.

usually it's 12-16 hour posts in 4 hour watches divided by lunches/breaks. contracts vary your work schedule and are whatever you volunteer for and what the client demands and what your employer can offer you. cruises and fleet services are year-round and are usually month-to-month and seasonal in different areas. long haul (what i do) and short haul are months at sea at a time followed by months of downtime. there's also different jobs you can do like shore patrol, cargo handling, et c that might net you more normal hours guarding a warehouse or something.

I have 4 years in infantry in the marines with 2 deployments and I've always been interested in this kind of thing. How did you sign up for this type of thing and how do you go about getting a sea card/port papers? Do you have to live in a certain area or have to relocate? What kind of certificates do they look for? Any help would be appreciated.

assuming OP is an american, your sea card is a US merchant mariners credential
and your port papers are your TWIC card

I highly doubt you need your MMC for offshore security work, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if a TWIC card was required

TWIC card costs about $140, and it's completely fucking useless

Join the Foreign Legion, their contract is just five years. Plus you get fantastic connections and networks, tons of ex-Legionnaires work as mercenaries/private security and they all stay connected for life through the "amicale" societies. But the Legion is no joke I'll wager, read Legionnnaire by Simon Murray.

>>
>>33727836
why tho
>>
>>33726750
Why is he doing that?
>>
>>33727852
Because the laws are fucked and you're not allowed guns at port, seems strange to me. They could give them to a smaller boat.
>>
>>33727839
Because it's unprofessional af and easy to get caught in shit
>>
>>33727889
Ponytails are tactical as shit though
>>
>>33727634
Well the first good step is to enlist, and you don't really get a choice in the matter. So tell me anon what do you want more, some dead keratin cells or the chance to shoot at some pirates?
>>
>>33727904
Not if it goes down down to your ass
>>
>>33727839
Because people are going to associate it with a "rebellious", antisocial personality, poor discipline, poor hygiene and possibly drug abuse. Besides it is a safety risk aroind any kind of heavy machinery and in hand to hand combat it gives your opponent a perfect handhold.
>>
Also anon buy if you're serious about getting into private security be sure to buy a $20 set of hair clipper and convince someone to give you $50 for shaving all your hair off, I've made a couple hundred over the years by doing this.

MMC is super easy to get with entry level positions and requires no testing, however if you're attempting to apply for AB, or captains licensing there's testing involved.

Don't put your degree on a resume when applying for Sea Org. They want uneducated workers to brainwash. Sea Org is a good start since you actually desire to throw away your chances in continuing biology and going on nature expeditions so that you can shoot pirates off at Sea.

unless you're driving oil trucks in the midwest, or on boats doing marsec shit, or going anywhere where there is a port or major distribution hub that won't allow access without the damn thing

and its only $140 but its a pita to get

infantry MOS's with deployments under their belts and good conduct are ideal. you generally apply to get your sea card through a merchant marine school who can handle the training or you finish an STW95 course from somewhere like MARSEC and it'll teach you watch standing and other duties suitable for sea work. courses last a couple months and cost a few thousand. likewise you will need (assuming you were never FMF or whatever) a VBO and/or MSA certificate as well. things like CLS and first aid are great too.

it works not unlike police academy - after you ETS, you inquire and interview, they offer a hire contingent on finishing their schools, they pay for your schooling and if you hack it, you are hired immediately after youre done. if you can't hack it, the contract is voided and you're out $$$.

>>33727177
marsec work has all kinds. nothing is stopping you from getting fit (a lot of health issues disappear with weight loss it seems) and/or just being a team member in something less high speed lol

>>33727237
usually through one of the european agencies that handle continental security or if you want specifically boats you'd look at getting your merchant marine stuff together and applying at AMS (armed maritime security) from 20COM (20 committee) or something. i know finnish and british security firms are all over the place for Baltic trade.

>>33727345
pretty much this, although MSA and for people that aren't salty a passed STW95 are also required. MSA isn't negotiable, but the STW and VBO are.

>>33727444
you don't, typically. either enlist or get a commission or joined the FFL and put in your time.

>>33727488
you find a training facility near you and apply. they dont' require anything other than money if you want the card - it's like getting a commercial truckers license

.>>33727790
it's not for everyone; you're at sea half or more a year and if you're not comfy traveling it sucks.
>>
>>33727839
liability and it's terrible to have long hair at sea. beards at least you can keep neat and get dense enough to not matter.

i've seen dudes get pinched by machines, and long hair is another pinch point. how do you feel about getting scalped? or getting it infested? or having it all salty and crusty and you're unable to do much more than a rinse in hot water and some soap?

Security Contractors are temporary crew members and if you aren't shooting you're usually standing watch or being another set of eyes on cargo handling or otherwise helping out with shit. long hair is a no go for most any factory job unless you keep it under control in a tight bun or something.

>>33729073
sea org is a cult of personality that's highly abusive. 10/10 would liquidate.

>>33729209
like what? my certs are on file not on me, and my sea card has my personal info on it.
>>
>>33730588
alright, i'm heading out. for more info you guys really can get a lot of places by searching for "maritime security training" or "MSA classes" or STW95 training.
>>
do only the security get to shoot pirates, or can a deckie pitch in when SHTF?
