One day, we are ambushed, and one of the loaders must have grabbed the wrong shell and fired at an enemy position. Saw a guy jump up to move from cover and he just spun into a thousand chunks in every direction, must have splattered his buds with viscera because we didn't get any more fire from that position and there were at least 40 of the farmers involved in the ambush. Just farmers. Thought we were coming to kill Muslims so the villagers hid thier holy books and anything that would give them away.
It's a hell of a thing to see, but we all just laughed as it happened. Gotta laugh it off or it fucks you up a little.

I believe that's the primary ammo type carried by the abrams since it's meant to kill other tanks. there is some canister that's loaded and some HESH iirc but I'd imagine the loader just muscle memory'd one in the tube

I can kind of go into detail about the physical processes involved.

Basically, most animals are big bags of incompressible fluid. When a high-velocity object strikes them, it causes a shockwave to propagate through the animal. Shockwaves increase the pressure of the fluid they move through. This pressure depends primarily on the impact velocity, density and speed of sound of the materials involved.

The shockwave travels through the animal until it reaches the skin/air interface. At this point, the entire volume of the animal behind the shockwave is highly pressurized. The shockwave then reflects off the air and becomes a rarefaction wave, which reduces the pressure of the fluid through which it moves. This is where the explosion occurs, because the animal's body is allowed to very rapidly depressurize.

If any real impact scientists are in this thread, please chime in. I think I have the whole thing figured out correctly.

The faster a projectile moves, the harder the human body becomes (hydrostatic resistance). Since the APFSDS moves so fast, the liquid in your body would harden instantly and it would bounce off.
