Well cotton is pretty versatile. We tried wool but the fabric is about 10 ~15 percent heavier while being worse at heat dissipation

We also tried nylon but it's fuckhard to make it fire resistant. Some companies cheapened on the thread by using 70:30 mixture but they were usually found out

Nylon is good for making harness and chest rigs. Battle dress, not so much (although we do use nylon for ubas )

idk bout the army but in the USMC we trained with rubber weapons during swim qualifications. I'm assuming this training is some jungle or other training where they aren't there to shoot but patrol and it isn't worth fucking everyone's weapons up.

Similar, in 08 there was a big hubub (Complete with powerpoints containing nasty burn images) about not wearing UnderArmor or other synthetic underwear because that shit instantly melts and fuses to skin during an IED attack. Lot of dudes were wearing that shit because it wicked sweat and helped keep you cooler, but it's fuckin awful for combat.

Turns a near miss IED with singed hair incident into a casevac and medical discharge. After which you get to wear custom prescription pants and never use your junk ever again because it's been burned into uselessness. Assuming you were lucky enough to not be wearing an undershirt and socks made of the same shit.
