Dropping in individual pods into the middle of battle with no organic support or logistics, just begging to be either shot down or barraged on the ground with artillery.
Combat itself in Halo is impractical and dumb.

>the difference is volume and dispersion.
And that ODST do not have parachutes and aren't paratroopers and paras have organic support and logistics and do not drop directly into battle and the two are nothing alike. What I described is nowhere close to actual paratroopers.
>>
>>33684646
To be fair the ODSTs werent dropped straight into the thick of battle. The games and books like to portray it that way but really, any force with half a brain wouldn't drop heavily trained troops with state of the art weapons and armor right in the middle of an enemy base. Typically ODSTs would be dropped into much safer areas where they will regroup and attack.
It's just more cinematic to show troopers fall out of the sky right into the thick of combat, but that's just PR and complete suicide if carried out.
Shit in Cole Protocol they dropped the Spartans and ODSTs away from combat so they didn't get their asses handed to them on impact.
>>
>>33684705
So why do they use singular drop pods? Do they have any organic support in the books? Mortars? Heavy weapons? Why are there no drones in Halo?

>>
>>33684646
The singular drop pod thing is because they get dropped from orbit and I guess for some reason the UNSC doesn't have the tech to make drop pods for more than one person.

Then again this would create a larger target and result in more dead ODSTs if it was hit.

Like this anon said >>33684705
ODSTs aren't used in the lore the same way you see them used in the games mostly for dramatic effect. Same with their support. Thing is the games leave out much of the UNSCs and Covenant equipment just because of limitations.

You also have to take into account what the UNSC military was more before the Covenant showed up, which was fighting insurrectionists. ODSTs are perfect for fighting rebels because you can stealthily (rebs can't detect them especially at night) insert SF anywhere on a planet for COIN shit.
>>
>>33684804
I can't remember if the UNSC has drones in the books or not
>>
>>33684582
The drop pods are meant to evade AA so the ODSTs can be inserted to take key positions to allow ground troop transports to land safely. They're able to carry their own kit and packs in the pods along with weapons, but even so the whole concept is a bit of a romanticism, kind of like how we still depict starfighters as having dogfighting capabilities when in reality single-man craft would be worthless compared to many drones at that point in the future.
>>
>>33684867
>In Halo 2 you drop as shock troops with In Amber Clad in support.
And to add onto this, they dropped with the best ayylien killer in the world, you could've dropped them right on top of the enemy and the outcome would have been the same.

>What makes ODSTs impractical?
In the context of this thread, the fact that they are a shitty rendition of the Mobile Infantry from Starship Troopers (book, not movie shit).

They are also a shit rendition of the same concept from a John Steakley book called Armor.
>>
>>33684529
Terran republic armor from planetside 2 seems most practical when it comes to sci-fi stuff and the armor does come in painted camo variants
>>
>>33684582
You telling me you can shoot down 100 or so pods coming in at terminal velocity and zipping around like shitty bees?

You might be able to get a few of them but the casualties would be far less than having one or two crafts carrying the same number of troopers getting shot down.
>>
>>33684804
Evading AA. By throw out enough pods it's impossible to destroy more than a fraction of them. Drop pods also don't need to return so they can come in faster than a drop ship.
>>
>>33684804

Singular drop pods are used because apparently their failure rate is fairly high, and burn-up in entry or hard landings are common.

There are some pod types in lore that carry supplies and heavier equipment that would be dropped along with them.

I don't think they were afforded a whole lot in the way of support, but could be assisted with orbital strikes. The entire point of ODSTs seems to be to clear the way for follow-on units in environments where more conventional landings would be impossible.

Ceramic plate does bullshit all against plasma weaponry my dude. ODST gear is to protect from incidental damage (explosions, etc) mainly on the limbs where fragments can destroy a soldier's ability to fight. If you get hit center mass with explosive fragments you're fucked anyways so might as well lighten the load.

It's not a perfect design obviously but its leagues better than most scifi schlock

Modern armor systems need to do the following
>1. Improve Mobility
>2. Improve Protection without sacrificing #1
>3. As a result of #2 it needs to be lighter weight
>4. As a result of #3 this means incorporating new materials
>5. The system must offer enhancements to the operator beyond the current standard including: integrated electronic hearing protection, HUD's, NV, assisted targeting.

No system I can think of has done all this without copping out to "Muh super-soldier" or "Muh speshal spess muhrines"

So basically what we need is a low power draw/hyrdaulic or unpowered exoskeleton, and NVGs with HUDs that enhance as opposed to obscure vision and are adaptable to all lighting conditions while obscuring flash to protect the operator like those filters on ACOGs coupled with some next generation of Materials Science plates/fabric weaves/gel layers that can absorb not only fragmentation but the concussive force of blasts. An exoskeleton could even save limbs from breaking/deforming if dampers are properly used

>>33687789
Points 1 and 2 are at their core contradictory; if you had a system that could feasibly hold more armor while also increasing the speed of the wearer without being ridiculously overbudget, there'd be better uses for it than on a battlefield.
Realistically you're going to either increase weight limit or increase speed. One requires a shitload of training, one does not.
Now I highly doubt we'll be sticking armor on exoskeletons, but the ability to carry more weight without fatiguing the soldier is worth looking into. Plus the possibility of man-portable servo stabilized weapons. But either way we're decades off from seeing that technology developed and generations from it becoming doctrine-standard.
>>
>>33687809
Well it is 500 years in the future, im sure they developed much lighter and stronger ceramics by then.

But even when they used titanium, the armor plates are only on the chest, shoulders, and legs so i dont think it would be much heavier than a couple Lv 3 plates.

What's the issue with liking something more from a different developer? Surely there are different manufactures of a certain firearm that were great and then were made by a different manufacturer and was shit? Or via versa.

Regardless. There has been a clear decline in the quality of content since 343 took over the show. Lore, games, books. Their making games for a whole new generation and we all know what kind of shit they like. That's not to say that it couldn't change with the right people with new ideas coming in and stirring the pot.

They're basically walking F-35s with prototype active camoflage

Technically, the active camoflage in ghost recon didnt work like that all the way.

The system does affect clothing and equipment, but not all the way. If you go back and play future soldier, go to the missions where Kozak has his sleeves rolled, and you can still see his forearms and hands, and the light emited from the Cross-Com display, as well as any gaps not covered by gear.

Ceramics seem to be very resistant against both heat and kinetic damage. It's probably why they've been employed in heat shielding for space craft re-entry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp9Yax8UNoM

These are the LI-900 thermal tiles used in the old space shuttle.

Now even if a metal plate could stop a shot from covenant plasma weapon, the plate would still get so hot it would fry anything touching it, including my skin and set me on fire. With ceramic material similar to the LI-900 on front, i might survive without receiving massive 3rd degree burns.

Before I played killzone, the Helghast gave me the impression that the game was going to be more horror oriented. Not in the grotesque way, but the feeling that you're confronting an enemy that's always one step ahead of you, and no matter how well you hid, they'd be the guys to find you. I was kind of disappointed in the actual gameplay. Is there a game that resembles the feeling I'm looking for?

They should have just balanced it properly so its an alternative to normal armor, not inherently superior (it makes noise so you can't sneak, less mobility, slower running speed, etc.).

Designers these days have this weird habit of never making human characters stronger than the player. If your fighting a being that is probably going to kick your ass it always has to be some sort of super-soldier/monster thing. Either that or they make you the underdog through narrative but the gameplay is just constantly stomping incompetent drones (lookin at you, CoD).

The best you could hope for would be more along the lines of suspense/stealth games. You're going to be hard pressed to find a Killzone-style FPS that doesn't have more traditional horror or elements. Doom and FEAR might be good options; a little more shooter-y but definitely not what I think you're looking for. Best bet is to look into the Splinter Cell franchise if your looking to get the heart rate up without having to fight something that came out of some hell portal or weird biological experimentation.

The training is because the idea was that it had some fucky haptic feedback, like that one old sci-fi book where the pressure you would exert to control the armor would be increased exponentially by the armor.

That way you could hold a dainty little teacup or punch a hole in an engine block depending on the situation.

Dudes need training so they don't crush their own gun in their hands the moment their asshole puckers a little.

I'm drunk I'm explaining this poorly.

I think in 3 or NV when you're getting PA training the trainer says a little something about that before it fades to black and you get the perk.

You are limited in sneaking with power armour, and sprinting costs fusion cores, which to a very minimal degree limits you.

It still is basically a direct upgrade though, but I'd rather it be completely badass than extremely underwhelming desu.

I like how Bethesda themselves said that T45 ran (and burned through) Microfusion Cells in Fallout 3, and that power issue was a key reason why it never deployed.

Somehow Bethesda can't even stick to their own canon.

>>33694316

I agree it should feel badass; but I think you can balance it by just making it play differently.

If you're wearing power armor you're a tank, you aren't sneaking up on anyone, you shouldn't be sprinting period and you're aren't going to be able to run away from much of anything, your mobility is going to be limited and maybe you're long range accuracy takes a bit of a hit since you aren't holding your gun with your bare hands; but you can take a shitload of damage and you've got a lot of physical strength.

That way you can have the experience of feeling like a badass shrugging off damage and wrecking enemies head on; but still have weaknesses that might get you killed where a sneakier or faster player wouldn't. And maybe, just maybe it might even encourage a different play style based on what and where you're fighting.

I feel like it was just the conclusion of them trying to pump out the cheapest games possible, Umbrella Corps as a prime example. It's like they took RE 4 and tried to cut more and more corners each time imo.

If they do reboot the series, I just hope it isn't in a completely new direction like they're doing with Prey.

I liked the idea of the harsh arctic environment being as much of a danger as the necromorphs, and i wish that was a more prominent feature.
But what i really liked was the preserved centuries old technology and the old suits.

2 is still my favorite though.
>>
>>33687789
the design in that picture is great.

Any realistic design with arms capability would need to provide gloves so negative trigger pulling forces don't interrupt aim at extended ranges, and to provide stability to the weapon while standing / moving.

The soldier of the future will shoot further, faster, and more reliably than todays best, but it won't be done naturally.

But I don't see training infantryman getting the choice to use a powered suit for training range days that aren't armour speciific.

So naturally live weapons training will need to improve to cater to higher level of skill required when performing multiple highly trained complex actions simultaneously, such as firing while moving at distance targets with high powered weapons while operating in powered armour.

good days ahead, and lots of bad days for a lot of other bad dudes.

Yeah but if we're going for dangerous environments I'd prefer deep space drastically over the harsh arctic. To be blunt the harsh arctic is nothing new in terms of horror settings.

They just need to make enemies a bigger threat in 0g environments first.

Note that this was a real development in the universe. They USED to drop in two or three big vehicles, but they were huge targets and too slow.

Note that ODSTs were also developed largely during the Insurrection, where it would have been much more effective for stealth. Harder to track a frigate in orbit and whether you're going to get dropped on in your shitty IED facility than tracking a VTOL full of air assault.

Don't mind the plot of the sequels, but the gameplay was shit in comparison. Literally took the things that made Crysis different from other FPS, a semi-open map design and interesting abilities that could be used in inventive ways in the engine, and pissed them away.

Nanosuit abilities nerfed despite it supposedly being an upgraded model, no decent physics engine, boring linear maps, combination of the previous 3 resulting in suit abilities acting more like power ups than actual game changers. Full of bullshit compromise to accommodate Multiplayer and Consoles.

3 was better than 2 but still not as good as it should have been.
