Does /k/ want to hear of my experience with Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore?
Pic related, it used to be a 460 Rowland case
>>
>>33681641
Yes, but with such clean tears, I feel there is more to this
>>
>>33681641
There hasn't been a single other brand to do this in my conversion, some even exceeded Tim's velocities with the same bullet weight.
>>
Shit, isn't case separation nearly always a head spacing issue?

Short backstory;
Longtime firearm and ballistic enthusiast, naturally I had a curiosity of 460 Rowland's potential in handloading. The more I looked into it, the more inconsistencies I found in handload data being compatible with the strength of MANY conversion kits.
I opted for the strongest build I could afford in my opinion, a 1911 with a Clark conversion - tank of a firearm.

what the fuck

Needless to say, before I wanted to dive into handloading a very popular wildcat cartridge I had to get a feel for commercial loads. Naturally, I had to look toward boutique stores like Buffalo Bore, DoubleTap, Underwood, Cor-Bon, Rowland's ammo, Georgia Arms and maybe 1 or two others I'm having trouble remembering at the moment that I didn't record any data from.
Nothing had a problem until I saved Tim's Buffalo Bore box for last.

Apparently the new Ruger GP100 in .44SPL doesn't like certain 200gr hollow points at 1200fps.

Continued, so I contacted Tim from Buffalo Bore to say hey what's up? I think there's a problem here and you should be aware before it becomes a large scale problem through other firearm systems and alike conversions.
I have no idea why it separated so hard and clean. I handload my brass, my chamber isn't rough or full of tooling marks.
Let me fish my email exchange out

Me:
Good afternoon to my friends at Buffalo Bore.
A while back I purchased a box of your 185gr 460 Rowland JHP to test with
alongside some other brands and I had some case failures on your ammunition.
I have a picture if you would like to see it, but pretty much the case
separated in half in a fairly clean cut, in two instances. I put the ammo
away after this happened the second time, as I had to disassemble the
firearm to remove the brass in the chamber both times. Chronograph testing
yielded positive results on the cartridges however, I pulled 1533 and
1532fps, well over your advertised velocity of 1500fps! This much was good
news, but looking at the primers on these two cartridges, one looks okay,
the other has a dark ring around it making me believe it was not seated
right, or it simply tried pushing back out.
I've never had a problem with your ammunition before so I do not know how to
handle this, and don't know how you guys handle this type of stuff. Any help
would be appreciated.
The firearm used was a Ruger SR1911 converted by Clark in their shop.

Tim (the owner):
Anon,

The 460 Rowland is a true wild cat cartridge.....there is no SAAMI of any
other type of specification. I completely cover this issue on our
site..............from the inception I was nervous about this cartridge
being over-pressure in some guns and I talk in depth about that on our site.
What you describe, with both the case separation and the leaking primer are
both signs of high pressure and I do not doubt what you are saying, in the
least. In my two Clark converted guns (and I cover this issue as well) all
of our 460 Rowland loads work very well, but I have no confidence that such
a high pressure cartridge will work in all conversion kits, even from the
same maker, because batch to batch, there will always be variations in such
kits/barrels/chambers. The 460 is a good idea and it has lots of merit for
certain applications, but until there are industry/SAAMI specifications
available for the guns and the ammo, there will doubtless be situations like
yours that arise, because the 460 is pushing the limits in several
ways.........the only solution to all these potential problems would be to
down load the cartridge to 45 Super levels, but then it would not be the
Rowland cartridge.

Best,
Tim
>>
Me:
Thank you for e-mailing me back Tim.
I understand your concern with conversion kits, it seems like everyone is still figuring them out. I am confused at what to do with this very expensive box of ammunition. I am curious as to what you guys are going to do to rectify the situation, whether it may be replacing it, fixing the problem, or do I take my business elsewhere?

I wouldn't be so rash, but very simply put these cartridges are over pressure. Many other users experience the same thing whether he is telling the truth or not in saying his don't reproduce the problem. Here's a blowout from a dead thread I found. Tim's 185gr .460Rowland in a G20 Rowland conversion if I remember right

Tim:
When it comes to wild cat loads, there are no specifications, so there is nothing for us to rectify……so if those are your parameters, I figure you’ll take your business elsewhere. Why are you not complaining to Clark and asking them to “rectify” the situation?.....that ammo works in my conversions…….

Me:
This is extremely disappointing.
I have only had one case failure of any kind with this particular firearm, which was yesterday, and thought I might do the good and honest thing and let you guys know something bad happened.
The other brands of 185gr JHP I tested were right on par with your velocity and their brass was fine after firing.

not sure what to say, you got memed so hard by so many memes from so many angles at once

nothing about anything in this thread was a good idea, and most became worse ideas by default after the previous idea
>>
Sounds about par. I bought some BB 9mm +p+ for my CZ Scorpion carbine, and half of the cases split almost cleanly in half. They did eject though.
>>
BB is shit tier, and generally dangerous.

Tim is a cunt as well and deserves to be crucified.

THANK YOU FOLKS
I'm glad to find like minded people for once.
I work on a lot of shit and felt very insulted by his answers
>>
>>33682235
Also, that's impressive of your Scorpion. I'll take note of it and hopefully it'll encourage me to buy one more haha
>>
>>33682282
Every single experience I have had with BB is negative. They have a reputation of making big boomer loads, except they intentionally push it to dangerous limits.
>>
>>33682302
The more I look into them, the more I feel the same way. I like Cor-Bon, or used to but I favor Sellier & Bellot for my rifles now, their quality ammo that is, and I've been dabbling around with DoubleTap and Underwood more than anyone lately to reference my handloads from. I don't know why I;ve always been such a Sellier fanboy

I shoot Buffalo Bore all the time. Great stuff, have fun OP.
>>
Wow OP very informative thread. I've long considered picking up some bb but have opted for underwood instead. I think I'll stick with them.
>>
>>33682391
never had issues with their hottest 10mm loads, that said 10mm barrels are generally beefy as fuck, and these "hot" loads are generally around what the oldschool 10mm was before they got downloaded, and eventually .40sw'd

half the cheaper 10mm you can buy today is just 10mm downloaded to .40
>>
>>33682282
yea fuck BB.

You areally not the only person he's been an asshole to. he's a conman, making hot ammo as cheap as possible to rake in quick money.

fuck that guy.
>>
>>33682441
Agreed, most 10mm can handle a little more juice than even the good factories five them.
>>33682401
Hey fish around a little at least! I love a lot of companies but always shop around to test the waters
>>33682456
This makes me feel better as well haha
>>
>>33682494
Typically I only use bb for levers and ruger #1 so my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive. With that said some guns I would only handload after liw end +p so bb would not even be attempted. I give you points for having the balls to hot rod a conversion but I am concerned about the wisdom of the choice
>>
>>33682049
Tim seems like a cool dude.
>>
This is a bummer for me, I have always been a BB fanboy. Oh well, I suppose I'll go to Underwood from now on. What really drew me to BB was that they use Barnes bullets in some loads, which I really like.
>>
>>33682235
>I shot +p+ and it was over pressured
REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>33684376

I've run other brands of +p+ and haven't had hotdog bun cases.

Just for giggles, I shot a BB +p+ out of my Glock 43 and the slide didn't cycle because case lodged itself in the chamber. Required stripping the gun down and hammering the case out with a dowel. Federal and Underwood +p+ don't do this.
>>
>>33685405
Yeah once you get to +p+ pressures factors of brass thickness, case volume, powder type and amount, chamber clearance all become increasingly important. Some hotloads are safer in more types of firearms than others so its part gun part ammo mostly knowledge that determines choices.
>>
>>33681641
>reload the half shells
>use them in a .45 colt lever action
>you now can fit 25 rounds of mini .45s in the mag if they feed
>>
>>33685473
Oh shit, it's 460 rowland, not magnum. Never mind
>>
>>33682282
>>33682338
Fuck off back to arfcom.

>>33684376
this.
>>
>>33682010
He kind of has a point. It would be nice of him to pay you off, but he doesn't really have to since there's nothing specific to conform to and it sounds like there are copious warnings.
>>
This is concerning.

I'm about to get a 45-70, what companies make loads that are full power and not loaded down to black powder pressures?

What loads do you guys use?
>>
>>33685782
Work your way up. I initially sighted in with cowboy action level loads and then tried more and more powerful commercial loads before handloading up to what a marlin 1895 will safely handle
