As soon as the Soviets unfucked themselves fighting on the Eastern Front they adopted a combined arms doctrine that makes the ones used by most modern militaries seem like Childsplay.

They literally let loose droves of ground attack aircraft escorted by fighters while on the ground hordes of T-34s broke through enemy lines. Also cheap and plentiful rocket artillery and when shit got tough self propelled howitzers capable of one shoting any of the Germans big cats.

That is just blatantly wrong. Of the 100,000 men captured when the 6th Army surrendered at Stalingrad, only 5,000 made it back to Germany after the war.
Hell, the Russians were imprisoning their OWN people in gulags for surrendering to the Germans. Most of those people didn't make it home either.

It had close to 170 millions people in 1939.
The population was young, mostly rural and made a lot of kids.
Every year of peace time, the population grew by about 2 millions people.

Losing 20-30 millions people during WW2 was a huge blow and handicapped the USSR for a full decade.
But they could have lost another 20 if needed because the population was kept misinformed, thighly controlled, used to abuses.

Also, they were told they would be exterminated if Germany won. So they endured the losses of sons, brothers and fathers with resolve and fatalism.

USSR was not a signatory of Geneva Convention on POWs and they treated their POWs accordingly (like shit).
Nazi Germany simply responded in kind. As a Czech I fucking hate Nazi Germany and the USSR equally, but the former only mistreated Soviet POWs, unlike the latter where your chances as a prisoner were always pretty bleak even as a Soviet citizen.

Tactical losses, as officers really just wasted men to made up for the lack of firepower, which really limit what your company can achieve.

Operational disaster as commanders failed to execute combined arms manoeuvres, expanding a lot of ressources for little gains, which will limit what an operation can achieve.

Strategic victory, as in the end China secured NK at a ridiculously low human cost compared to its demographic ressources.

Even assuming 500.000 chinese soldiers died, there were around 20 millions chinese born every year back then for only around 10 millions dead per year.
So those 500.000 casualties weren't even showing in the statistics, which was really all that mattered for the PRC leadership.
It mattered all the less that these soldiers were uneducated peasants at a time where China had too many people for its economy.

It comes from the beginning of the war on the Eastern Front.
Soviet troops back then were ill-equipped, badly trained and even more badly led.

Entire divisions and even army corps were being encircled with little to no supply.
In many cases, discipline would break down and mass surrender would happen.
But when discipline was maintained, officers did what they could with what they had... which was mostly a lot of dudes who could only execute simple tactics.
Human wave it is, then...

When Stalin's orders made it so that the troops could not even make tactical retreats, using human wave attacks was often the only available tactics :
what else are you going to do with inadequate weapons and ammunition, along with next to no transport, armor, artillery or air support ?
You can only dig in and resist as long as possible until you can use local numerical superiority to counter-attack.

Later in the war, equipment and training improved.
As competent officers arose and proper equipment became available in larger quantity, doctrine could evolve into something less bloody.

Human wave, in itself, isn't the mark of incompetence alone.
It can be the result of a lack of other options combined with an imperative to attack actively on a large scale rather than going on the defensive or switching to protracted warfare.

German to Russian losses likely suffered a greater disparity. You have to look at the deaths by country rather than as a whole because the Italian, Hungarian and Romanian, as well as Finnish and Scandinavians were all present on the Ostfront, and a majority of these foreign volunteers had a different level of organization and greater disparity in equipment by quality, number, and sophistication, so they took different casualties accordingly.

Many of these units, if not all, were involved in severe conflict.
