Did we reach peak aesthetic with the Vietnam War? Music, culture, uniform, weapons, everything.
We reached peak aesthetic with Desert Storm/Gulf War 1.
Those were the good old days. The military was shit ever since it left Vietnam.

Vietcong dug tunnels for bases, launched attacks on American bases from them, would use them to ambush Americans, etc.
Americans sent in "tunnel rats" (men designated to go into the tunnels) to go in with a flashlight and a gun, and kill any Vietcong they saw and collect a little bit of intelligence, and possibly destroy the tunnel.
Dangerous job.

>Did we reach peak aesthetic with the Vietnam War? Music, culture, uniform, weapons, everything.
Patton would have gone ballistic.
That is exactly why the USA did not get the result it wished in Vietnam. The weapons available manpower were all in favour but a disastrous rotational cycle, failure to form cohesive units and a complete break down in discipline resulted in excessive civilian and civilian suffering and casualties and ultimately a strategic defeat.
If you want to loose a war this is exactly how you do it. Kill ratios do not matter when you don't get the desired result a defeat of communist forces.

To be fair, they're about as Communist these days as China is. One party rule, but at least Charlie realized that the key to a good GDP is letting McDonald's and Levis sell to your people.
I'm not one of those "HURR WE WUN THE WAR" faggots, but I definitely think we contributed to the 1986 reforms, if only by demoralizing the entire country (and ours) through endless warfare.
My grandad fought in 'Nam, rest his soul. I got most of his war stuff when he died. Found this in his files, apparently he kept it. Fucked up stuff.
>>33668344

>>33669551
From what I've seen in old newsreal and training film stuff, most of the time they would just try to clear far enough to rig up a field expedient explosive charge, and demo the tunnel. There were special engineering units that were called in when possible, these guys probably needed the whole complex cleared.

The new intake officer corps that replaced the ww2 and Korean conflict officer corps were unfit for purpose. Blaming the men is unjust. Their officers failed them in every way by allowing such a breakdown in discipline, standards, drug consumption, spread of demoralizing materials, literature and music etc
It is quite noticeable that the initially deployed soldiers in 65/66/67 look like soldiers and then a collapse in standards occurs

Helped loose the objective by providing russian subversive anti war elements with images of civilian casualties that cannot and should not have been taken or distributed.
Equally disciplinary infractions relating to the treatment of civilian and enemy combatants should have been stamped out immediately via the harshest punishment available.
It is an error that the US repeated with the abu ghraib fiasco. The deeds were one thing, but the act of taking the pictures was inexcusable and should have resulted in life in military prison given that the taking of them undoubtedly cost fellow servicemen their lives.Taking of ears etc is not soldierly conduct. By all means kill the bastards but do not disgrace the uniform by acting like some tribe of illiterate cannibals.

he also said they had some fucking KILLER shrimp and seafood there. shrimp the size of banana he had pics of the seafood since we didnt believe him.

An electrical anomaly had caused the discharge of a Zuni rocket on the flight deck, triggering a chain-reaction of explosions that killed 134 sailors and injured 161. At the time, Forrestal was engaged in combat operations in the Gulf of Tonkin, during the Vietnam War. The ship survived, but with damage exceeding US$72 million (equivalent to $517 million today), not including the damage to aircraft. Future United States Senator John McCain and future four-star admiral and US Pacific Fleet Commander Ronald J. Zlatoper were among the survivors."
