Why did the Sherman always lose 5:1 against the Panzer IV?

Was it its gasoline engine or its thin armor?
>>
>>33663718

They didn't call it a "Ronson" and "Burger Blaster" for nothing anon.

Sheldon Cooper also says it was an absolutely death trap, and I'll take the word of a man who's been there and done in, as opposed to some fat fuck historian 70 years later.

Anything that gets hit by a german long 75mm or 88mm is a death trap. However sherman tanks had great crew hatches for a very fast dismount.

Burgers cant build decent cars and they certainly cant build decent tanks.

Thats also why all the Abrams get BTFO by Hajjis

You might have to try a bit harder to ignite diesel, but when AT weapons are involved you're by definition trying really fucking hard.

>>
>>33663798

>>
>>33663718
From a quick google search it seems that it wasn't so much engine fires as ammo being ignited when the tank was hit (compound problem of thin armor and dry-stowed ammo). The issue was solved by a combination of applique plates and wet stowing the ammo.
>>
>>33663754
>Wtf are those hits from?

.50 BMG
>>
>>33663829
There's no way in shit that happened during combat.
>>
>>33663718
Do you have a source for that figure? Also, a Sherman actually had relatively good frontal armour when the slope was accounted for, as well as one of the best survivability ratings of most allied tanks in the war, especially once they added wet stowage bins for the ammunition. Shermans were also easy to recover and repair, and it was a fairly common practice to keep shooting a tank that the crew had bailed out of until it caught fire so there was no way it could be recovered.

Pretty much every medium tank was a death trap in WWII. When everyone was fielding guns that could pen everyone else.
>>
Early in the war, Tank Vs Tank, the Sherman was a glass cannon.

The Panzer had several layers of thick armor that was forge-rolled steel; the Sherman had cast steel plating. Panzers were actually lighter than Shermans. So the result was early in the war, the Sherman tank crews discovered they had issues penetrating German armor at range, which gave the Panzers a substantial advantage. You start an offensive on flat terrain, you're going to see some serious losses with Shermans until you can get in close. Get into urban fighting and the story changes, the Sherman was designed more for that role.

Later in the war, Shermans got a bigger cannon and better ammo that could do the job properly.

Actually, it didnt.
Air force would often strafe a tank and claim it as a kill, when in reality a .50 cal would only scratch a tanks paint job.
For example, between the 7th and 10th August, the 2nd Tactical Air Force of the 9th USAAF claimed to have destroyed 120-140 tanks, yet of the 46 Axis tanks lost, only 9 of them could be attributed to aircraft.

One of my uncles was a tank commander in the Pacific in WWII.
He had 3 shot out from under him in one day, I think Okinawa. Not sure. Said he'd return to the beach for another tank and keep on. He never went into much detail about it. Don't know what happened to his crews.

Was your uncle an officer? If they were dismounted and unwounded, officers would often hijack someone else's tank. I mean, the officer can still lead the platoon or company from a different tank, and you don't want to give that job to a man who might not know what to do as effectively as someone who is practiced at it.

if i could go back in time i would have used an M4 sherman. an inferior tank is better than a tank that cant even get to the front lines before mechanical issues.

>Wet stowage consisted of surrounding the ammunition stowage bins with a water/gylcerine mixture held in an outer hollow casing. The idea was that the water mixture would pour out over any penetration of the bins by enemy AP shot/ shell fragments thereby preventing or at least slowing ammunition fires.

>This modification appeared in Feb 44 on late production M4A3s

>A US Army study showed that 10 - 15% 0f wet stowage Shermans burned compared with up to 80% of dry stowage vehicles.

It's a well known fact that rifle bullets would go right through the sherman's paper-thin armor. Most of the destroyed sherman's in this thread were actually destroyed by lone riflemen who needed to only shoot the 'tank' once.

I was in that big new WW2 museum in Poland recently and it's pretty surprising how large Sherman was compared to T-34.

They have a Firefly and T-34 85 standing close to each other and it's really surprising.

I guess that big profile together with not so amazing armor was a big downside.

They look much better than T-34 though.
>>

>Germany made the biggest investment into tanks and specifically tanks that fuck Russians

>>
Daily reminder that that the Sherman and T34 had nearly identical armour on the upper glacis (47mm at 60° for the T34 and 50.4mm at 56° for the M4 Sherman, which was the most fielded variant but later models had armour up to 89mm thick)
>>

Part of that was to make the crew spaces more ergonomic. Its part of why Sherman crews survived their tanks being hit better than others, it was much easier to get out.

Dry storage is exactly that, Storage of shells and charge bags in a rack or shelving container

Wet storage has each shell surrounded by a small water tank, if hit the water would immediately quench the shells, hopefully preventing neighboring shells from being detonated from cordite charge fires.

Because Shermans didn't spontaneously light up either, the whole "Ronson" thing comes from a book written by someone who never fought in or with Shermans.
Anyone who wants to dispute this, show me 1 thing. Any and I do mean ANY GERMAN field or tactical document from the war referencing Shermans readily catching fire.

Just like the 5 to 1 meme, It isn't showing the Sherman as inferior. It's showing American Logistics as superior.
It didn't TAKE 5 to kill one, it was that 5 on average were able to respond to any Tiger found.

More accurately that a platoon of Shermans was the smallest tactical unit you moved around. Said platoon consisted of 5 tanks under ideal conditions.

The reparations imposed on Germany were patterned directly on the ones that Prussia imposed on France a few decades earlier after the Franco-Prussian war, and France managed to pay them off in only a few years by going on a strict austerity program. The rise of the Nazis owes more to how the German government and people reacted to the reparations than to the reparations themselves.

I recommend Richard Evans' Third Reich trilogy if you want to learn more about this stuff than you ever wanted to know, the first half of the first book is pretty much devoted to this exact issue.
