If the primary concern for arming cargo ship to defend against pirates is the fact that no port will let an armed ship dock without a nightmare of paperwork, would the following be a possibility?
Consider this: a smaller boat that would be loaded onto the larger ship and would be left on international waters while the "mothership" docked and loaded/unloaded cargo.
This detachable boat would be used to temporarily hold the ship's armament, and would then be picked up again and the ship could travel armed, but never take its armament into foreign ports.
>>
What if the pirates steal that boat while the ship is in port
>>
Like a naval equivalent of "leaving your guns at the door"
Would it be practical?

Depemds on what kind of guns you want to have on the ship
The biggest "easy" transportable gun would be a .50BMG and even with oneof these it would be a pain in the ass.
>>

Would it be a concern if it's at a maximum couple of miles from a major port?
Even so, it would be armed to the teeth, so that would be a deterrent
>>
I don't think it'd be too hard to stack, say, 4-8 M2 .50 cals (or any .50 cal really) and 1000 rounds for each in a smaller "guns at the door" boat while business is done on land.

>This detachable boat would be used to temporarily hold the ship's armament,

They could pirate a couple ships themselves while they're waiting.
>>
>>33649167
they literally dump them in the ocean and buy new guns.

really.

"Oh yeah let's just have a bunch of heavily armed patrol boats that may or may not answer to a ship that may or may not be at dock somewhere just running around outside our waters" -Absolutely no fucking port ever
>>
>>33650358
Well they have no jurisdiction over these waters, do they?

>>33650347
Could also work, but what a waste
>>
>>33650460
You realise countries have jurisdiction for up to 200 miles from land right?

>What waste
Not really, they're just tools, not like they're all armed with genuine Stg's or something. It's easier just to buy new ones anyway. They're not short of money.
>>
They already have similar services, companies will loan gun then pick them up when it goes to port. Maritime security get their weapons delivered then the next time they go into port will be the end of the trip so just throw all the weapons overboard
