I'm gonna get my first shotgun soon (within the month) and I've been thinking about either a Mossberg 88 or a Rock Island M5

Which would you pick?

(Main use: range toy with buddies)
(My fault when it comes to guns: I tend to weigh aesthetic of gun slightly higher than function, although if it's a logical choice on which gun is functionally better, I'll go with that one)

Dam dood, I'm not shooting for the stars money wise on my first gun

i've never tried the m5 but the 88 is just a cheaper version of the 500 which i do own and its never failed me and never failed my old man before he gave it to me either
>>
>>33648638
Damn, any idea of how many rounds ballpark you shot with it?
>>
>>33648587
I want you to pick the rock island as it is still "new" so any word of mouth on a Brooklyn shoe board is fine.
>>
>>33648599
I work at a trap range and got to manhandle one of these pretty neat shotgun.

>>33648587
Either save for a Mossberg 500 or if you absolutely need it now, grab the maverick. Stay away from big 5 for shotguns, anything Rock island or Dickinson is trash.

I'd go for the 88, my dude. It's just a Mossberg 500 except made in Mexico with cheaper parts, so they're pretty solid. Rock Island has sketchy quality control, and I wouldn't really trust my fingers to their stuff.
>>
>>33648670
The only exception to Rock island is their 1911.
>>
>>33648587
Mav88 all day. Get the 7+1 20" or the 18.5" security model.

Don't do what I did and get the field model just to spend another $150 to get a 18.5" barrel a month later. Could have got a real 500 for that kinda monies.
>>
Thanks /k/ommandos, I'll put some good thought into waiting for a 500 instead

I had the M5

It was garbage. Wouldn't feed shells, action would lock up after firing, finish was garbage and it was way too heavy.
Sold it and got an 870. Get the Mav 88, it's a much better gun for the same price range.
>>
>>33648587
Owned an M5 for all of two days. Literally shot the shells out of the tube and through the shell lifter when trying to cycle rounds. When they didn't fly through, it failed to load about 25% of the time (shell nosedived). Finish was good, but fit was meh. Definitely not worth it.
>>
>>33648644
well i dont use it for skeet or anything like that but i've used it and beat the shit out of it just running around if I had to take a random guess id say maybe around 500 for me could not tell you how much my dad put through
>>
>>33648587
There's a 590 on sale for $300 right now OP. It may be a bit out of what you were planning to spend, but it's generally considered the "best" of the mossberg tactical/defensive line.

Personally I'm thinking of flipping my 500 and getting the 590 right now.

Do not get a RI shotgun. The extractor usually shits itself after 50 rounds. Do not get a Hatsan Escort, IAC, or H&R pump. Don't get the tacticool Chiappa. There are marine pumps on the market that aren't dogshit but those companies don't make one. Look at a Tristar or a CZ and work your way down.

Get the 88 m8. I love mine, it was my first shotgun.
>>
>>33648587
I have a Winchester SXP and I love it. Fastest pump out there

FUGGG

if I wasn't saving up for a car, I would of brought that in a flash ;-;

>>33649559
That's beautiful m8.

>>33649537
Overdelivered on the info, thx

>>33649584
Not doubting your experience, but first thing that popped up as I googled it was "Winchester SXP recall", kek
>>
>>33649190
That's a really good deal.
If I didn't already have a 590SP I'd grab that up and throw some wood on it.
>>
>>33648587
If it's a range toy, get whatever the fuck you want. Our approval will not determine your enjoyment. I would question how much fun a defensive shotgun is at an actual range though; unless you're blowing shit up on somebody's land they're pretty fucking boring.
>>
>>33650095
Everytime I've gone shooting with buds, a shotgun has always given me a blast

I was thinking a rifle but at my point, buying .223 ammo would be an hobby a little too expensive to maintain

Shottys have the power and the ammo is just so well priced, I love it

If I can find a good one, I'm gonna try for a Lee Enfield for my next gun, although that isn't in the near future
>>
I'm not really in the market for a shotgun, I want a rifle. Problem is I live in Commifornia. I've figured out I can get a fixed mag SKS and keep a hold of that if the new restrictions go into effect. As great as it is, is there any other weapon that operates in a similar fashion that isn't from the Soviet Union and still in production? I know it's a great gun, but being stuck in commieland with a weapon from the communist wouldn't feel right.
>>
S-Shotgun thread?

Does Mossberg sell flat/flush butt plates for their 500 stocks? I don't really like that 14" LOP on mine, but I can't find anything to replace the damned spongy pad.
>>
>>33650551
Unless there are some new restrictions that I haven't heard about, "featureless" guns with detachable mags are still fine. The most prominent examples of those would be the Mini-14 and M1A, and there are also various ways to convert ARs and AKs into compliant guns.

This downright unconstitutional shit that may never see the Supreme Court is why I'm looking for something I can speedload with a stripper clip.

sad to hear the M5 is trash. the flite king action is an underappreciated pattern and RIA has been cloning it since they were squires-bingham/squibman.
one would hope they had worked out all the kinks by now especially considering I think high standard sold them the tooling after they went under.
>>
there are charger systems in development that load fixed magazine ars through the open and locked action, csa makes new production vz 58 rifles that load through the top with sks clips in 7.62 and 5.56, and it's probably worth it to keep an eye on the ca compliant keltec rfb
>>
>>33650823
I may not like the reliability issues with the keltecs but I have to admit, those folding backpack guns would be great in a guerilla/asymmetrical warfare situation

Sorry I guess it's the RDB that's in 556. It's one of the only monster-man compliant stocks that doesn't look like complete ass. Gun Jesus liked the regular RDB and even though I am in a free state and am generally weary of lel-tek, I am interested.
>>
>>33650917
Sigh, how the fuck am I supposed to grab that thing? Can someone quickly tell me the odds of the restrictions I posted here >>33650747 being struck down?

I have the rock island. Love it.
Smooooooth action
Google the gunblast video about it.
You will get one as well.

do you fuck and cum inside your garbage can?

If you can find one for a good price, look into an ithaca m37, they're great guns and they slamfire. Remember to tell that to who ever you let shoot it though...

>>
>>33651877

Just like there's always going to be a lemon in the bunch it's possible to get a good one of a bad gun, car, whatever.

Maybe he lucked out? It happens.
>>
>>33652230
Ain't gonna lie, it looks pretty cool and something tells me some lube on the action should remedy any slide stickiness. That's what I had to do with my Hawk 192 (870 clone).
>>
>>33648587
I just picked up a Mossberg Maverick 88 today at WalMart for less than 200.00. Definitely a good choice. Basically a Mossberg 500 with a cheaper trigger group with some mexican made parts. Worth every penny.
>>
So glad I ran into the thread. I was actually about to buy an m5. Thanks a bunch all of you
