What have you guys gotten recently? Any thing on order? What do you want, and realistically can get?

Recently (past month or so) I've gotten;
Opinel No.9 Carbon
k55k
Cold Steel XL Talwar blue

On order:
Boker Kwaiken MassDrop exclusive, rose wood handles and mirror blade

Want:
BK-9
ZT 0055
ZT 0460
Douk-douk
>>
And a few more pics for the heck of it. The Talwar I got.
>>
And a pic I took today of my cousin's Skyline with Flytanium scales.

Yeah they are pretty spectacular, especially considering they cost so little. I'm going to buy a pack of stainless ones at some point, sharpen them when I get the chance, and just put them in my car, first aid kits, and gifts.

Right now I keep mine in my bag for food prep.

Ayyy nice! What size you go for? looks like a 1600 to me. You have a nice number of Spydercos. Say would you be willing to take a side by side pic of the Ladybug next to the spin? My Gf is trying to chose between them atm. And what's in the bag in the right corner? A Torx set? I'm thinking I'm going to embed a few Whias in the top foam of mine.

I never got around to taking that new pic like I said I would, so here it is. The two little Spydercos (I had the three, need to get a new Grasshopper, gave it away), are going up in the wall foam behind the fixed blades. The Voyager is just going to lay there for now, it was kicked out by the Talwar. But it and the Espada really have not room in my case anymore, they will have to live in the fixed blade draw.

It's a 1500. Yeah Spyderco is still my favorite brand. I've gotten to the point where now I just want to try everything spyderco and start collecting my favorites, which right now is the PM2. Which one do you think is a spin? I can take a picture.

This is what's in the bag.

I got my Talwar 4inch today, paid 60 for it.
It was from a pawn shop on eBay and it's practically new, as if someone carried it for a month, cut nothing and then decided they didn't like it.

Anyone else think the Native5 is probably one of, if not the most underrated EDC knife out there?

>3" blade
>2.5oz
>finger choil
>great jumping
>4 pocket clip positions
>S35VN full flag grind
>under $90

I can't think of one major knock against it, especially considering the price. It hits all the important points of an EDC knife.

If you like the looks of it then you will love it. I think the looks and the lock are the weakest parts of it. If this thing had a compression lock for the same price or slightly more it would be ridiculous.

I would be a little afraid to brush up against that. I'm hanging my longsword bare blade, and it's a sharpsword, but nothing like a sharp pocket knife sharp.

>>33648231
Oh is it not a spin? The one two down from the purple Ladybug.

You may have seen me say this before, but my favorite Spyderco, favorite knife, is the Tuff. When I bought it, I was choosing between it and the Southard. How do you like your Southard? I assume it is one, the one in the second row up to the most right.

>>33648289
That's cool. The 4" did not catch my fancy at first, but now that I have the 5.5" and love it, I don't know, I may have to see if I can find a gray or blue one before they go away. I figured I would not carry the 4" if I got one, but I think I would. Should have believed Condorfag, he told me the 4" is a good carry size, should have listened to him, and not bought any of them to save my self from buying more knives.

>>33648312
I've handled a few. They are nice knives... I think my problem with them is my same issue with most benchmades... they are nice, and very well designed... but seem to lack some sort of personality. Or maybe it's just because I'm into longer knives.

I think the problem with the Native 5 is that the Manix 2 exists for only a little bit more. It's like the little brother trying to walk in the shadows of a prolific big brother.

A few years ago the knife "community" was really split on the Manix vs PM2 debate. But it seems the PM2 won the contest.

>>33648467
Looks great, you did a very good job keeping that tip clean. Is it chisel ground or both sides? And what steel? Plan on adding scales or cord?
>>
>>33648543
It's not in a spot that's easy to bump against. Worst thing I see is it cutting one of my rifle bags.
>>
>>33648543
>Oh is it not a spin? The one two down from the purple Ladybug.

Oh shit you're right. It is a spin! I just remembered it as a nishijin or something like that.

Yeah I can take a pic of them together later. The Ladybug is my keychain knife. I'm just collecting the Spin. Own two... The Ladybug is definitely the better knife for using, though the Spin is like a miniture custom knife. Very pretty and sharp as hell. Sharpest knife I've bought out of the box, even though it's VG-10 like the Ladybug.

But since it's a Sprint run tell her to get it, but I wouldn't carry it around and use it. You can always get a Ladybug for cheap to do that.
>>
>>33648543
It's chisel ground and o1 tool steel. I threw on blue g10 over brass liners. But I don't have any pics of that.

Alright thanks. Yeah the Ladybug is a great knife, I gave a purple on to my Ex a few years back, she still carries it on her keychain. I had a Grasshopper on mine, but I managed some how to lose my Keychain, along with well over $100 of Titanium stuff on it, somewhere in my yard or my house, a year or two ago.

Not yet, I've got a ton of them in my wishlists. Mostly OTF's though, just never pulled the trigger yet. As for their side folders, I was considering the DOC is blue like yours, but I'm not a fan of the look of the grip inlays and how the square handle contrasts with the blade. As ergonomic as McStriders handle's are.

They aren't the worst you could have gotten, it's better than Mtech and Smith&Wesson (knives).. but SOG in general is not too great now a days.

Also Serrations, some people like them, a lot of knife guys don't. If you are not into sharpening, nor have a way to, than they aren't the worst.
>>
>>33648490
I have one that I will sell. However, please note that the tip was chipped off by a dickhead that borrowed it. But I had a knife guy re-profile it. It's one of the older versions. It will be priced accordingly but Have not determined yet.

I'm out of town so can't get pics until I go back home probably this weekend or early next week. I was going to throw it on eBay or bundle it with other knives. If you're interested, let me know. Post an email.

Mon nègre des colonies.

It's my absolute favorite knife ever: so small and easily concealed, with such a great blade, and the slipjoint lock is the most reliable ever, and gets even better as it's banged up a little and tightens around the blade, making the lock even more firm. I love and trust it more than a K55K desu.

It also looks so fucking cool seriously.

I'm not him, but it's for single hand opening, acts as a thumb stud of sorts. A lot of people do this on classics, like the Buck 110.

Yes it is in the cutting path, but if you are using the knife for utility, and not really for food prep, it's not the worst thing.

They did a really good job with it, it looks like it came that way from factory. I have reshaped quite a few tips, mostly kitchen knives with broken tips, but nothing really big like that. I'm also not good at keeping 90 degree spines, mostly because I prefer the rounded spines near the tip.

I'm really looking forward to the Sliver as well, it's one of the few Spyderco's that really excites me. It's very remittance of the Junior, which I love.

I think there is talk about changing the name though. Something like another respected knife maker, friends of the Glessers, has a Sliver model.

I'm also highly considering the blue M390 PM2 right now. Not sure how long they are going to be around.

Depends on what I'm sharpening.

Most knives, such as the Boker Kwaiken from pic related, I use my Wicked Edge set up.

For serrations and fast touch ups I use a Spyderco Sharpmaker.

For Scandi grinds, flat polishing, and free hand practice, I have a set of water stones and a DMT diamond plate for rough work.

For very large blades, like machetes and scythes, I have a 1x30 belt sander.

>>33656063
Pretty much. In my opinion, if you don't care about sharpening as it's own hobby, and just want sharp knives, set angle systems are the way to go. Free hand sharpening is a hobby of it's own.

>>
>>33655468
Honestly I think "Sliver" is pretty fitting, but I wouldn't mind if they changed it. Googling it often results in the Silver Foundry, another Spyderco knife, so that could help prevent confusion. What excites me about it is the use of a compression lock on a flipper, never been done before the 2 they announced at SHOT. The Paul Alexander design is just the icing on the cake.
As far as I understand, the M390 PM2 is more like a full production knife, they just send them in batches. It's a Bento Box exclusive still, they can just run out of them, and for whatever reason they call it a sprint. I've heard that story several times on different knife forums, so I believe it to be true. They haven't stopped being on Bento Box since release.
>>
>>33660238
The Hanan looks so good folded but the blade looks so terrible. It reminds me of a Thorburn kind of. That recurve won't be nice for sharpening though, especially without a sharpening choil. It's still exciting that it's a comp lock flipper though.

Still my favourite, Opinel carbon no 9.

Also I'm getting weary about chink knives, I learned the hard way that their looks are not to be trusted, thankfully it wasn't a serious cut.

SR 7010 framelock is really weak, Ganzo G729 axis lock a bit less but still dangerous.

Ganzo Firebird F759M midlock is really thought, and my RAT1 linerlock, which I expected to be weaker has proven very strong.

Old Hickory Butchers Knife. Can grab them off knifecentre for about $15 USD. Definitely going to be better than that Pakistan made thing. Does it have a marking on it anywhere that says what steel it is made of?
>>
>>33662089
nah, nothing to identify the steel or alloy. The brand is Sicut and model is Hunter. I have no expectatons it is anything special. It even had a little corrosion in spots when I bought it. It will be a work knife and receive no special treatment. I liked the full tang, blade thickness and shape. plus the price was so nice I bought two of them so when I break this one I have a spare...
My Father-in-law showed me a Bowie he has today. It has about a 6 or 7 inch blade and I did note it was AUS8. He bought it for $100AU about 40 years ago. Very nice knife. I can't justify spending that kind of money on a camp knife. I did consider an online purchase but found this cheapy and liked it. Unlikely I will buy another knife for a long time. I must admit, I'm here from /out just for the knives...

Lol actually never finished.. For the sake of meme though, I'll do it now and take some pics. I'm sure it will turn out fine. I'm pretty experienced with Cold steel AUS8. What has been taking me is it was really asymmetric at the tip, I've had to take a lot of material off.

The Wicked Edge had longer arm's than the Lansky, so the angle change is a lot less across the arc. Also the XL Espada's curve almost mimics the arc of the Gen 3 WE, so it's almost a perfectly consistent angle.

Say is your's a AUS8 or XHP?

>>33663510
>>33663750
>Fuck S35 for a knife that sees regular usage.

I also question why? It's a very good steel for EDC, very stainless, pretty good edge retention, okay edge stability (if you temper it right, *cough Cough* Chris Reeve), and it's not that hard to sharpen as far as upper end steels go.

Drill a hole through the handle and attach a wine cork or 2 with some twine or paracord or whatever. You could also put a key ring through the hole and attach the knife to one of those retractable lanyard things and clip that to your belt.

Run a string through the lanyard hole, and tie it off to a belt loop, or attach a clasp on it and just hook it on that way.

Well I'm up to 600 grit now, so almost half way through my stones.

The final bevel is a pretty consistent 16.45 DPS, so that's what has been taking me, I thinned it quite a lot. Mostly for the look of it, I figured a knife this large, would look good with a really tall bevel.

Guys, what do you SERIOUSLY think about Cold Steel?

From what I've seen in stores, they look alright as long as you're not looking at retarded Steven Seagal zombie killing katanas. Nethertheless two things caught my attention:
- Pocket Bushman BD-1 (pic related), because it's small, thin and light. Essentially a bigger, safer Douk Douk.
- Standard latin machetes, because I need machetes.

What would be your opinions on those?

AFAIK CS no longer makes a single damn thing and they contract out for everything. This means that some things are great (those sword pattern machetes that aren't in production anymore because the factory in China burned down) and some things are shit (many of their swords, which are often made by halfass manufacturers in India). You ought to look at reviews for any given product to see if it's worth a damn.

IMO for basic bitch machetes Ontario>Cold Steel, I only go with CS if I want something unusual like their smatchet.

I have a pocket bushman and Latin machete.

My only complaint with the Pocket Bushman was the 4116 steel, which as you know, has been replaced. Everything else is fine if you know what you are getting, and that is a two hand folding knife.

Their machetes are great, if you are good at sharpening and willing to make it into a bit of a project. My 24" Latin machete worked great for years, I actually fell with it on my belt, and bent the tip to the handle, even then it only took a 5 degree set. It's bent enough that I don't use it for brush anymore, rather for cutting roots, even then it's holding up well even with that extreme abuse.

>>33665512
Their Machete's were never made in China, at lest with in the past 5 or so years. They are all made in South Africa. They are making more swordchete's now than ever.

>>33666483
I'm the guy from the first picture you tagged the second picture is not me. Yes I use all my knives except for a few. Granted I don't consider beating them on rocks proper use, using a knife as a knife, it should not take any damage that can't be almost completely cleaned off (except coating wear). And also, since I rotate my knives, they don't get used everyday. Pic related is my ZT 0652cf, a $240 knife, I took it apart for cleaning last month/ You can see it's clearly been carried quite a bit.

>CS's sword pattern machetes were in fact made in China

When? They have always been using 1055 carbon, and they have always had the same Polypropylene handles, since they introduced their first machetes in 2002. The first kind of sword like machetes came out in 2007, and they all had the same handles that the current (non "D") Latin Machetes have. They did not really start pushing out the swordchetes like they do today until after 2010, when the Katana and Gladius machete came out. And by that time, I know for a fact that they were in South Africa, because I got my fist CS Machete in 2010.

They did not start messing with the handles until the past year or two.

I bought the nice Blue companion thinking it would be a fish knife, however it ended up being WAY thicker than I was expecting. So mine will see limited use, mostly staying in the kitchen drawer. I have a ~5-6" Rapala Filet knife that is perfect.

Get a one though, to have a Scandi grind knife.

Personally I don't ever take mine anywhere cause it's awkward taking it out, finding something to thwack in on to open it. Mine still hasn't loosened up. A complete bitch to open even with fingernails. But it's essential for a meme collection. Yes the geometry and size IS perfect for a fruit knife, but do not get the carbon one unless you like high maintenace shit. My suggestion is get a good Victorinox Pairing Knife, so it actually stays sharp longer, and can be thrown in the kitch sink, washed, and thrown in the dishwasher. A wooden handle meme knife... has limited use.

That's where I got my k55k, and it seems legit. I don't know if it is the kind of knife that is faked, imitated for sure, but maybe not flat out faked. Although it's worth noting that the original company went bust in the 90's.

As for Amazon fakes, as far as I can tell, anything sold as a "Prime" item is the real thing. But that could be wrong, all I know if I've bought quite a few knives from Prime and all have been real. Also a few Yeti items, which are very often fake, were real from Prime.

>>33671647
I keep my Opinel in my bag for food prep. It's a Carbon, but the plan is for it to develop a good patina.

>>33671728
Start out with the plain old Mora Companion. If you are working around the water or in snowy or tropical environment, maybe good to go for the Stainless. If not the Carbon is a better steel, better being stronger and better edge holding. With the carbon one, you can force a patina as the protective coating. You can do this many ways, but some lime/lemon juice for a little bit is a easy one.

I partially agree on your opinion about Opinels.

I wouldn't recommend an out of the box carbon to anyone really, blade gets stuck easily, rust out the ass...

But if you spend some time with it, those problems won't happen anymore.

Pic related.

Sanded the handle to my liking, making it easier to open.
Soaked it in linseed oil for a couple of days, moisture isn't a problem and blade doesn't get stuck anymore.
Forced a patina on the blade simply stabbing a lemon and letting it rest for 24-36 hours.
Drop a bit of cooking oil where the blade folds from time to time.

And done, no more daily care needed.

I have a barong and sax machete so I could take pics of the "CHINA" stamp if you want, although with my potato phone I'm not sure that they'd come out well. The handles may look the same and do appear to be made out of the same material but the Chinese ones are soft and rubbery, all of the other CS machete handles that I've encountered were like hard plastic.

If the catalogs are anything to go by then the original sword pattern machetes were gone by 2009.

Put it in your pockets. It'll be a lot easier to access compared to digging through your purse, assuming your pants don't have useless girl pockets.

A waved knife would be good for speedy deployment, which is helpful for self defense (which I assume is why you have it since that's the only practical use for a huge knife outside of memes).

The first is an EDC knife, with emergency first aid in mind. I don't plan on using it much, but if something were to happen I'd like to be confident that it would perform. Looking for something with a glass breaker, and able to cut clothing/seat belts.

The second is a machete, or something else that can cut down small trees and brush that can be carried all day everyday for work. Willing to pick up some sharpening tools to keep it working.

The USMC ones are primarily made with the fighting knife mindset. The blade cut and handle design are made to excel at that, and it's really just meh at most other things. The downside IMO is the rat tang design. I would go with the BK7 as a bug out/general usage knife.

IMO the BK7 is the more solid knife, especially since Kabar has gone full retard with the pricing on their standard Kabar and the 2 are comparably expensive.

>>33676319
Sorry Anon but this entire post is a crock of memes.

The Kabar that we know today is based on an old design that pretty much every American knife manufacturer was making in the early 1900s. Kabar is currently the most well known manufacturer of that design but they weren't even the first to get it to the field en masse, IIRC that was Camillus or Cattaraugus.

The reason that this design was popular here in the US is that it's good both for utility and killing people. The reason that the military adopted it is because they needed a knife that's better at the former. It was also cheap to manufacture.

Define pocket knife. If you mean a knife under 4" blade length that folds, you should be fine. Putting it in your purse is no different than your pocket.
It's true that you don't get searched, but it's still a good idea to abide by the law. If you were to be arrested, pulled over, or otherwise investigated, having a huge ass stiletto in your purse would cause an unnecessary headache. On top of that, stilettos make terrible tools (which is what a pocket knife should be used for).
Spyderco makes a wide range of good folding knives for good prices. I've already suggested the Para 3 which I think is the best option, but if you wanted to go cheaper you could get the Delica. If you really want to be safe you could get a sub 2" like the ZT0900, Spyderco Dragonfly, or even a slipjoint 3" or under like the Spyderco Spy-DK, UK Pen Knife, or Pingo, as slipjoints are legal pretty much anywhere and staying sub 3" is likely not to cause issues.

Since you said it would be for self defense I would probably not get a switchblade since those are illegal there. I understand the fun factor but you'll be happy if you ever have to go to court after defending yourself.
Just get a manual or an assisted. Most are just as fast to open as a switchblade and are legal.
I would also recommend getting something that's not too big. Once contact is made you will want as little of the knife handle protruding out of your hand as possible since that'll only give the attacker more opportunity to disarm you.
That big knife you have now, although it looks sexy dangling down your leg, is probably the worst thing you can have.
So something slim, not too big, fast to open, with a stabby blade. Conclusion: Benchmade 943

>>33676963
Kukris are overrated as fuck, and I say this as a kukrifag. They're pretty damn big knives that are closer to hatchets than machetes and are usually pretty heavy for their length. Even relatively inexpensive production stuff like pic related will have a minimum thickness of around 5mm, the real deal will be more along the lines of 7-10mm. You might have use for a kukri but that depends on what exactly is in your woods and what else is in your bag. For instance, if you have a hatchet or a camp axe then instead of a kukri you might want a longer, thinner blade such as a machete.

Do you currently go innawoods, and if so what do you already have and use?

Not much to it. Main things to know are; Try to run first, don't let them take it from you and don't stop stabbing until they stop moving.

Also, someone suggested PM3 and Delica. I could not disagree more with those choices for self defense. The blades on those are simply too short and wide for their size. You want a blade that is as long and thin as possible while keeping the handle relatively short. So again: Benchmade 943
>>
>>33677386
Definitely taking notes over here. I'm sure I should look more into VA law for this question, but what about actual self defense practices as far as say, getting away with it, if that makes sense. I did look up your knife laws real quick and took those into consideration for my suggestion of the 943.
In all honesty, I would not suggest pulling a knife in a rape scenario. Better to have your pussy hurt than to take a knife into the equation and possibly lose your life because of that.
A knife is a weapon you only use if you are certain you are about to die.

Pic is a comparison between the delica and my 943. A PM3 is about the same size as that delica but with a bulkier handle.

We are not talking about combat knives. We were talking specifically about a concealable smallish self defense knife that should be easy to open and fit a presumably smaller hand.

>training is a lot more important
A lot of the training out there is quite unrealistic. Stick with the basics and pick a knife based on that.

>when you're using a small pocket knife it's not going to make that much of a difference anyways
Completely disagree. A small advantage in being able to penetrate through possibly multiple layers of clothing can mean the difference between life and death.
You want as much potential penetration you can get. Narrower, longer blades are objectively better at this.

A Delica is thinner, and it and a PM3 have more efficient blade geometries for using as actual tools.

>A small advantage in being able to penetrate through possibly multiple layers of clothing can mean the difference between life and death.
Except a half inch isn't going to make much of a defense in real life, not to mention that a 943 still isn't long enough to reach any organs or anything.

It's the equivalent of talking about "stopping power" for pocket guns when really the most you're going to do it clean it of lint and shoot it once or twice just to see if it works. Just armchair kommando theory when your time would be better spent training.

Never denied that. Just pointing out that a lot of the training out there is unrealistic. If you know how to get to your knife, how to get it open and how to keep it in your hands, you're off to a great start. If you can combine that with other martial arts training, that's great.

>A Delica is thinner
Only marginally. Length, width and tip shape are more important for penetration.

>and it and a PM3 have more efficient blade geometries for using as actual tools.
Debatable. And irrelevant in this scenario.

>Except a half inch isn't going to make much of a defense in real life
Except it most definitely could, so why risk it?

>not to mention that a 943 still isn't long enough to reach any organs or anything.
That's totally dependent on the build of the person and what he/she is wearing.
On an average person, it is most definitely long enough.

>Just armchair kommando theory when your time would be better spent training.
Part of training is researching what tools will be most efficient for a particular situation. Stop seeing things so black and white.

Enough about knives, how about sharpening? How the fuck do I bring back the factory edge? Do I grind it towards, or away from the edge? Some youtubers seem to think it doesn't matter, but my edges turn out WAY sharper going away from the edge, but it just makes a weak burr. What do I do after I have a burr? I have a generic rough/ fine stone from Home Depot.
>>
>>33681109
After you get it as sharp as you like, remove the burr by gently sharping towards the edge on the burr side at a steeper angle to create a microbevel. Take only a few passes per side. Strop that summbitch on an old leather belt or a pair of jeans if you don't have a strop. You are done when there is no burr.
>>
>>33666432

Yep those are fake and that's not G10.
>>
>>33681109

This:

>>33681202

Get a leather strop.
>>
>>33681109
You'll need a leather strop, and some stopping compound to finish it off.
>>
>>33681109
First, oil the stone. You can use motor oil, or whatever you put on your guns. Place the knife edge on the stone and rock it back and forth until you find the factory angle. Now you try and slice a microscopic layer off the stone. Do it the same number of times on each side, and gradually decrease how many times you do it until you are doing each side once. Now strop the blade, which is the reverse motion. Do this on a piece of leather, or on your jeans if you are careful.

Bear in mind your edge will only be as good as the stone you use, so don't expect to shave off your 400 grit Home Depot stone.

If you can't get a good edge from the stone, you will need to buy some sort of consistent angle sharpener. Some people just can't judge angles properly, myself included.

I don't know if they fully warrant the hype they have gotten for the past hand full of years... But they are very good knives for sure. Extremely useful design for general EDC. Mine is in my normal rotation.
>>
Looking for a new edc, $100-200 range, solid clip and fast to open should I need it.
What do?
>>
>>33684141
>fast
> -200$

That still leaves you a ton of options. Narrow it down more. Lock type, handle material, steel, blade shape, steel, etc.

>entire post is a crock of memes
But nothing I said is actually wrong (other than your nit pick at rat tang). Go ahead and try and tell me a stick tang is better than a full tang for woods use, tell me the clip point is more useful for woods tasks than the point of, for example, a BK7. Go ahead and tell me the entire design of the USMC Ka-bar is not more aimed at the idea of a fighting knife.
I never said that Ka-bar was the only one to make the design, I'm fully aware that's not the case. I collect WWII militaria as a hobby, and that's not exactly an unknown fact. I also never denied that it was useful at both fighting and utility tasks, I just said that it was better at fighting than using it as an end all knife. Chill out man, you're too tied up in this.

Your post was 4 sentences and 3 of them were crap.

>Go ahead and try and tell me a stick tang is better than a full tang for woods use

The Kabar's stick tang is a full tang, it runs the length of the handle. It's not a slab tang, but unless you're doing something unreasonable with your knife there really isn't a functional difference. I prefer slab tang, but that's mostly for aesthetic purposes.

>tell me the clip point is more useful for woods tasks than the point of, for example, a BK7

The BK7 has a clip point my dude.

I am telling you that.

>Chill out man, you're too tied up in this.

You're on 4chan, I'm on 4chan, and it's not like it's some Herculean effort to point out that I think you're full of crap. I came to this general to talk about blades, I don't know why it surprises you that that's what I'm doing.

Anyone own anything similar?

Not him, but I bent the blade at the hilt on my KA-BAR chopping some 2-4 inch branches for firewood (I personally see this as a basic task that isn't demanding of a design). I gotta say that the tang design on it really isn't very good if you want an all around woods knife.
>>
>>33684929
The British WW2 Fairbairn-Sykes commando dagger. Not used anymore because the very narrow blade needed to be quite thick to give it enough strength which made it a poor cutter in an emergency. the handle is too skinny for a good grip. It also had a round cross section which makes it impossible to tell if you are holding it correctly in the dark. IIRC there were quite a few instances were British commandos tried to cut some sentry's throat with the flat of the blade.
Try the Applegate-Fairbairn dagger for a much more advanced uncompromising fighting-knife design.
>>
>>33685006
Just checked it out.
Why is flat on one side only? Looks weird/cheaply made.

Way sturdier knives have broken doing the exact same thing, I'll refer you back to the part about doing unreasonable stuff with your knife.
>>
>>33685024
I think that is the compact version. The full-size version with the 6'' blade has a "classically" ground blade. Besides, many all-out fighting knives are ground on only side, it gives increased strength at reduced weight.
>>
>>33685114
*on only ONE side*

It's called a chisel grind btw.
>>
>>33683631
Chosera. I use them in a hapstone, they are expensive but worth it once you accept the fact that you are a knife fetishist.
>>
>>33678051
those actually suck for utility use. you can ONLY use it for fighting because of the knuckles forcing you to hold it one of two ways. ka bars solve that problem
>>
>>33685101
>chopping
>unreasonable
the problem is KaBar leaves the tang unhardened rather than full hardening then deferentially tempering the tang back down. it's a cheap/shit tool not an unreasonable task.
your example is due to Ka-Bar's continued problems with embrittlement.
>>
>>33683843
I loved mine until i tired to stab a a window and broke of the tip. FFG is a meme for me. Sold it and bought a delica 4 that I am as happy with as I were with the pm2

With certain things chopping is an unreasonable task, and you picked one of those things. Pic related is an excellent utility knife but it can't chop for shit, that 1 drawback doesn't detract from all of the other things it can do.

People who think knives are made to do everything under the sun are why crowbar blades exist, maybe go with one of those instead of picking the wrong tool and then blaming the tool.

the general heat treat process they use has been disclosed. the tang on the traditional KaBar USMC style knife is not hardened. it's going to bend and not spring back. this is objectively true, and so is the fact that alternative heat treat options exist. they salt bath just the blade because it's cheap.

>>33685261
the knife should be able to chop and not be damaged. if it's a light knife, then it won't chop very well, but there is no reason it shouldn't survive.
>>
>>33685319
buy crap and you get crap
>>
>>33685319
>the knife should be able to chop and not be damaged.

According to who?

There are many knives meant to fit the bill of jack of all trades and the Kabar isn't one of them, which is why people generally also own things like hatchets and saws. You did something unreasonable with your tool, that's on you.
>>
I was considering buying a Kershaw Leek or a RAT1.

Instead I'm buying another Opinel and pimping it for EDC.

Black handle, thumbstud, clip and lanyard hole.

I always wanted to make a plastic/zytel/whatever handle for an Opinel but I'm clueless.
>>
>>33685655
>pimping it for EDC.
kek why bother?

>>33683666
I don't have first hand experience but they're very well reviewed and originally what I intended to pick up before I found some king stones on sale a while back.
>>
>>33685476
That wasn't an unreasonable task. Plenty have done the same task with other knives and had no issues. Fact still remains that the stick tang of the USMC knife is inferior to the slab style in woods tasks.
>>
>>33686242
>That wasn't an unreasonable task. Plenty have done the same task with other knives and had no issues.

Considering the tool you chose, yes it was. Some knives are made to handle things like that. The Kabar, like many other utility knives, is not. This is why people commonly use hatchets and saws as well.

You picked the wrong tool for the job, that is not the tool's fault.

>Fact still remains that the stick tang of the USMC knife is inferior to the slab style in woods tasks.

And the fact still remains that unless you're doing something unreasonable with your knife there really isn't a functional difference.

it's nice init? I'm not very good with whetstones so i used my lansky system to make kind of an convex edge. something like in the pic. feels like it cuts better

Just think about how hard it would be to open, need to add a nail nick while you're at it.

I got M3 with Olive wood handle and leather sheath. Its made from Niolox and its fucking amazing. Stays sharp for weeks of heavy use and sits well in the hand.

I second this (>>33685157), I have one Chosera (so far) and it's just so much nicer than everything else I have. I plan on slowly replacing my other water stones with Choseras. Naniwa is expensive, but they make really good stuff.

>>33685275
A lot of cool designs, can be very hit or miss, worth looking for a few good reviews before buying.

>>33686624
I've played around with that sort of thing on my Wicked Edge. I call it a Compound Convex, needing at lest 3 relief bevels besides the main grind, if there is only 2, it would just be a V bevel with a micro bevel.

On paper it will not cut as well as a similar convex, but in practice, you would be hard pressed to tell a performance difference between them... V bevel included.

>>33686908
I really like Ontario, my only problem is that the SP line (the old stuff for sure, idk about the Gen 2 line), comes with a needlessly thick edge bevel.
