223/556 is the perfect example of having the worst of both worlds. It's too much more expensive than 22 LR to be a viable plinking cartridge, yet too small to be a viable hunting cartridge. It's a hermaphrodite.

>but the military uses it
So? The military made the decision to adopt it for reasons which do not apply to civilians: the need to carry large numbers of rounds and the need for control under fully automatic fire.
>>
>>33646108
>It's too much more expensive
How fucking poor are you?
>>
>It's too much more expensive than 22 LR to be a viable plinking cartridge
Are you fucking kidding me? Its like 20 c a round, less in bulk
>too small to be a viable hunting cartridge
Then dont use it for hunting rhinos you fucking moron, its a varmint cartridge.
>>
>>33646140
>doesn't understand opportunity cost
It's not a matter of being poor. Suppose I have a need for x number of rounds for plinking. By using 22 LR instead of 223, I can save money and divert that money into other things, like better optics or pussy.

More like 30-40 cents per round. Meanwhile 22 LR is less than 10 cents a round.
>>33646157
>Then dont use it for hunting rhinos you fucking moron, its a varmint cartridge.
I don't hunt varmints. There isn't enough meat on them to really make it worthwhile. If I do decide to eat small animals. I can kill them just as well with a 22 LR.
>>
>>33646108
>Doesn't know what a varminting round is

Or, sorry,

>>33646188
>Knows what a varminting round is, but
>Well, I don't do it so it's stupid!

Why did you kill a thread for this stupidity, OP?
>>
>>33646177
>AR-15 is a super deadly weapon
You do realize that a full size rifle round would have killed him just as dead, and probably killed him faster, right? You do realize that a 223 is little more than a hopped up 22 magnum, right?
>>
>>33646214
>didn't read my post
I'll rewrite what I wrote so you can read it again.

I fail to see how .223 is shit just because you're poor/unsavvy and dont have a coyote problem, these are not faults with the round.
>>
>>33646250
>If you don't spend money for no benefit, you must be poor!
>>33646250
>and dont have a coyote problem
I don't, and I suspect most 223 owners don't either. Coyote hunting is a niche application that doesn't justify 223s overwhelming popularity.
>>
>>33646220
55gr 5.56 is going 3,300fps at the muzzle.
50gr .22mag is going 1,500fps at the muzzle.
That's well more than double the energy. The rounds are not in the least comparable.

>Ferrari is just a hopped up Fiat!

>>33646225
Good luck with .22lr on coyotes and small hogs, faggot.

holy shit you're fucking retarded

>You do realize that a full size rifle round would have killed him just as dead, and probably killed him faster, right?

And your point is? .50 bmg will kill someone "faster" so should that cartridge be adapted for all small arms?

Just kill yourself, moron.
>>
>>33646108
>yet too small to be a viable hunting cartridge
I've butchered a few deer taken with it via regular shot placement.
It causes plenty of internal damage.
>>

wrong
>too small to be a viable hunting cartridge. It's a hermaphrodite
wrong

Pro Tip: anti-223 is complete fuddlore. M193 is literally more lethal than 308 while weighing less.
>>33646188
literally 22 cents per round, 29 for brass
>hurr steel
then build a 5.45x39 AR so you can have the reliability of brass case 223 with the lower cost of steel case 223

Good luck plinking at 300 yards with a .22 lr.
>>
>>33646428
I don't have any 50gr, but 40gr is the norm for 22 WMR and my 40gr Maxi Mags went no more than ~1100fps from an 18" barrel the last time I took out my chrono.

(55 * 33002) / (40 * 11002) = 12.375 times the energy

Aguila SSS from a Bushmaster XM15-E2S + CMMG ARC22
(55 * 33002) / (60 * 8502) = ~13.8 times the energy

Federal Automatch from a PPK/S 22
(55 * 33002) / (40 * 9002) = ~18.486 times the energy
>>
It's a sufficient cartridge for taking deer, though some states require a minimum 23 calibre.
>>
>>33646910
Yep, that is the downside. Fortunately it's complete fuddlore originating from an anti-black rifle bias and 300 memeout, 6.5 grendel, and 450 bushie get around that.
>>
I use 3 different rifle ammunition.
.22lr, 223/556 and 30-06.
Why the 3? .22lr is perfectly find hunting ammunition. Even the subsonic can take down a deer. 223/556 tougher game needs this. Why not bigger? No need. It is solid, compact and can work if I buy either type in the correct barrel. 30-06? I can hand load depending on my needs. It has a much better range than the 308 if you compare power needed.
>>
I dislike 223/5.56 because it's fucking boring, but you're a retard.

It's damned fine as a hunting round and works really fucking well against people, too.

Cheap .223 is not hard to find.

>>33646157
>Varmint
It'll take down anything in NA.

>>33646161
By that logic .22lr is the only viable option for plinking.

>>33646188
>Doesn't know about Tula
>Bitches about expensive ammo

>Varmint round
>Will kill any durr, elk, pig, hog, horse, or cow just fine

>>33646220
Oh okay, so according to you the only cartridges that are viable are .22lr and 21mm.

>>33647079
.22lr will not take Elk or larger deer, and I'd be concerned about inhumane or multishot kills even on small whitetail.

I'll agree though that .30-06 is awesome for handloading options, but that's also about all the advantage it has over .308.
>>
>>33646108
YOu had a good argument until your second line. Fuck you and your infringement on my rights.
>>
>>33646910
>>33646950
This. I asked a guy who is a die-hard and very seasoned bowhunter if he thought .223 could drop a deer.

>Anon, I shoot at them with a flying stick. If you place your shot right, you can do it with .223.
>>
>>33646309
>and dont have a coyote problem
I own 5.56, but here, we have a nigger problem.
>>
>>33647105
>It'll take down anything in NA.
Ehhh, technically so will a .22. I really don't see grizzly or elk hunting with a .223 as a good idea.
>>
>>33647176
>So will a .22

No it won't.

>Grizzly
I'd trust 5.56 to kill a Grizzly. Part of .223 magic is what happens immediately after it strikes a bone.

I'd rather use .308 so I could do the same work at longer range, but that's mostly because I find 5.56 fucking boring to plink with.

>>33647186
Yes, it will. If you place one right in the noggin. That doesn't mean recommended or advisable or even probable, just possible.
>>
>>33647253
I know from experience that even larger calibers can bounce off hog skulls
>>
>>33646108
This thread is cancer. There might be one or two people who have actually hunted large game at any point in their life. I've seen whitetails take a double lung from a .243 and still run a quarter to half a mile. .223/5.56 will kill a deer, but it's not an optimal hunting round for large game. It just doesn't hit hard enough. .22LR is a great plinking round, but if you're shooting outside of 50 yards it's not adequate. .223/5.56 is a very good alternative for longer range shooting.
>>
>>33647275
And people have successfully headshot hogs with .177 air-rifles. The point is just because something is possible doesn't mean it isn't a completely shit idea.
