Looking for masks and respirators that could be useful if not necessary in a SHTF event or just an attack. Is pic related any good if worn with eye protection?
>>
you can get real gas masks for the same price as that respirator. i doubt 3M respirators are NBC rated
>>
Check to see if the respirator cartridges protect from particulates AND organic vapors. These are commonly called combination cartridges. If you have prescription eyeglasses consider chemical goggles to protect yourself from eye irritants.
>>
>>33645829
The housing is very good and airtight, but the protection depends on the cartridges used.
>>
ideally I would want a military gas mask used in conjunction with commercial made filters
>>
>>33645854
Any recommendations? Links or pics would be helpful.
>>
>>33645854
What's "NBC rated"?

OP here, one of the first things that came up when I searched NBC masks was this. Would this be better to have than just a half face respirator? Any recommendations on cartridges and filters would be greatly appreciated.
>>
>>33646284
I have a 3M respirator, I'll check.
>>
>>33645829
Good enough for smoke, dust and tear gas, which covers at least 90% of what you'd actually encounter in SHTF.
>>
>>33645829
Tell me about yourself, why do you wear a mask?
>>
If you get filters rated for organic vapors you are going to be set for anything shy of stuff that affects your eyes and exposed skin
>>
What would be a good mask to protect myself from volcanic ash fallout?
>>
>>33645829
N95 masks will do OK but certainly less than great. I'd look at Israeli civilian gas masks and a variety of filters. Primarily NBC right about now.
>>
>>33646383
it'd be better than just a half mask, but same protection as half mask + goggles unless you are wearing a full protective suit.

check out approvedgasmasks.com, that's a good place to learn
>>
>>33646452
Most respirators will work for that, but you are going to need to stock the fuck up on filters as they will have very limited use under ash conditions. As a fellow ash lander, I need to do the same.
>>
>>33646498
from what volcano do you hail, fellow ash lander? I'm moving near Rainier this autumn
>>

>>33646392
It is. $30 for a new, modern respirator that you can easily get new filters for.
The packaging on the filter says "organic vapor/acid gas cartridge/P100" for the 3M 62023

Thanks anons. Another question, should I avoid full masks that are almost entirely visor like pic related? I've read some stuff on here while lurking saying that these are dangerous because of the large seal area.
>>
>>33645829
They will NEVER be useful to you as you have not done any nbc training and even then that is a deam effort on what is effectively a suicide mission

But a S10 because it is a classic.

Beware old weird filters unless you like rare lung diseases. New stuff only

>>33646583
I'm no expert, but I'd think that if you get a mask that fits well, keep clean shaven, and PRACTICE donning the mask quickly and correctly then seal shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully they wouldn't design the mask that way if it wasn't effective

Yep
100-300mm area reporting. Yellowstone park is the way it is because it is sitting above one of the largest known magma chambers in the world. it is a super volcano.

>>33645829
1. be sure to include a couple disposable razors and maybe some wet wipes or some shit with your masks. scraggly post SHTF facial hair can prevent you from getting a seal, defeating the purpose.

2. you should also look into a lightweight PPE suite. Many biological and chemical agents can be absorbed through the skin.
>>
>>33646627
>>33646673
Yellowstone level event will be rough on any gas mask. Take a look a normal home air filters. There is a rough filter then from there a fine filter. With a gas mask it is just a fine filter and will get clogged quickly.

Same will happen to any vehicle engine with an air filter. Good luck driving away.

>Zone 4 would still see substantial amounts of ashfull. Any areas with more than 30 centimetres of ash are under severe risk. The primary cause of death would be from roofs collapsing due to heavy ash load, potentially 1 in 3 people would be killed this way. Breathing outside would be very difficult. The water would be contaminated with sulphuric acid. The ash would enter air filtration systems causing air quality problems in structures still standing. There would likely be no power and very limited transportation, if any at all.

this one is cheaper OP, also it is full face, and has a relatively new filter that has been made within the last 10 years which is what you want
let me impart some wisdom onto you about my experience being teargassed in the back of an open bed truck and why spending $100 on a gasmask is retarded

>me
>cs gas cloud
>*sniff sniff*
>ohmygoditfuckingburns.jpg
>dudes left and right of me trying to zip up their NBC suits over their avon masks
>even with an NBC suit, i can feel burning sensations on every slightly open crevice of the suit
>CS gas is the lowest lethal gas on the chemical weapon scale and still burns through chemical suits
>you will not survive sarin or mustard gas without having terrible burns

there's only 2 reasons to own a gasmask, one is for fires and smoke and burning garbage and shit like that and the other is to not get tear gassed or grendaded in a riot

preparing for anything else is a waste of time
>>
>>33647044
it'll help with biological agents and fallout, not to mention non-weapon chemical hazards. for fire you want a dedicated firemask
https://www.amazon.com/FIREMASK-Emergency-Escape-Mask-Respirator/dp/B00AM3I8H2
>>
>>33647044
You dont understand how easy it is to make chemical gas. Guys at (legit) car repair shop are shown how just so they dont kill all the staff.

As for cost. I agree. Too much is stupid. Cost vs benefit based on situations is required.
>>
>>33645854
Problem is, a NBC situations where a "real gas mask" would save your life over a good solid 3M mask is also a situation which would most likely require you to have advance warning, specific training, NBC full body protection and access to decontamination equipment.
>>
glad this thread hasnt gone full retard yet
Yes the 3m half face respirators will be good enough for most "reasonable" things (tear gas, fallout). Imo spending $40 more to get a mask like an MSA millennium is a good idea because these masks use a single side mounted filter which is good for shooting, have a drinking tube (this is a huge deal if you live in hot weather), and can handle big boy threats like nerve if you have the rest of the gear (which is actually attainable for $350 or so).

People always talk about cartridge availability being a problem with 40mm threaded masks. They fail to realize that 3m makes an adapter (#70070408508) that allows you to use 3m respirator filters on 40mm masks.

>>33647210
>advance warning, specific training, NBC full body protection and access to decontamination equipment
The biggest issue is advance warning. Detection kits can be bought fairly cheap but if you're close enough for a kit to pick it up you're fucked. The rest of the stuff can be bought pretty cheap (Tychem LV Coveralls, israeli atropine injectors, gloves and overboots) as for decon, household bleach is actually very effective at destroying some nerve agents and actual decon packets can be bought. Still though the chance of you being attacked with nerve agents or some crazy shit as a US civilian are tiny.

>>
>>33645854
> i doubt 3M respirators are NBC rated

They're built to higher standards. Any NIOSH certified respirator exceeds Milspec standards.
>>
>>33646152
Why?
>>
>>33647577
the only respirator that 3m has made that lives up to NIOSH CBRN standards is the FR-m40 and they stopped making that.

>>
>>33647703
I dont think you understand what
> NIOSH CBRN standards
means. Look at the link. A fucking 3m half face $30 respirator wont protect you from nerve gas.
>>
>>33646215
Any properly fitted NIOSH certified full face respirator with organic vapor-acid gas multigas cartridges will protect against all agents including the nerve agents that will kill you by skin contact. Tyvek, nitrile, and duct tape will protect you long enough to get out of the plume.

If you're serious about this, pay for a 40 hour HAZWOPER certification course. You'll learn how to select and use PPE appropriate to the hazard, how to maintain your PPE, hazard identification, and decon.

But only if you're serious.

Nerve gas is covered under OV (organic vapors)/AG (acid gas)/ P100 (particulates).
Which is what it is designed for.
>>
>>33647744
make sure its NIOSH --CBRN--(this part is fucking important) certified if you're dealing with actual chemical warfare agents. Some random NIOSH masks/filters wont cut it, the agents literally eat through the rubber on masks.
Every single NIOSH CBRN mask is named in this link.
>>33647631
Also dont use some random Tyvek suit, make sure its at least Tychem LV, again chemical warfare agents are fucking nasty and will eat though shit fast. Use real chemical tape and use Butyl gloves.

>>33647803
Look at the link, it literally lists every single NIOSH CBRN certified mask. A half face mask wont protect you from nerve gas because 1. your fucking eyes are still exposed, 2. if you also wear goggles there will still be exposed skin on your face which will get you killed because nerve agents kill through skin contact 3. the nerve agents will eat through the rubber on the $30 half face mask because it was made to deal with spray paint fumes not chemical warfare agents. None of this should matter though because my initial claim is easily verifiable
https://www2a.cdc.gov/drds/cel/cel_cbrn_results.asp?startrecord=1&maxrecords=50&Search=QS&cbrn=cbrn_apr
strait from the NIOSH website, every single mask that has met their CBRN standards are listed right there and the only 3m one is the M40 which was discontinued.
>>
>>33647860
Ok.
>>
>>33645829
Tell me about yourself, why do you wear the mask?
>>
>>33647631
Check the link you provided. 3M still makes the fr7800b respirator, which is also certified for CBRN use.
>>
>>33647860
>only 3m one is the M40 which was discontinued.

Wrong. Fucking wrong. LOOK AT THE LINK YOU KEEP SPAMMING THROUGHOUT THIS THREAD, FUCKWIT. It also lists the 3M FR7800b, which is still in production and available just about everywhere. In 3 sizes, no less, which are also listed in your link. Pull your head out of your ass.
>>
>>33646830
>Good luck driving away.
Driving shouldn't be a problem. once clogged just pope the filter off and keep going. it will destroy the engine eventually, but should get you a few more hundred miles. since it's really dry it shouldn't build up significantly, but it will wear away at the piston walls. making it burn more oil.
