Going pig hunting this weekend in East Texas. I've got a 30-30, AK, AR, and a bolt 243 savage with the Accutrigger. Going with a buddy. What two guns should we use? Any suggestions for bait/scents? They have been rooting up our cattle ranche's pasture land, and we'd like to kill a few.
Baiting them or tracking?
>>33637522
We'll, we were thinking we would try to bait where they were tearing up the pasture. We had also talked about going up the creek bottoms to try to flush them out.
Any suggestions on what works best?
>>33637506
God damn, that's a start. Still won't be enough though.
>>33637522
We only have one catahoula hound. So no pack hunting.
I pig hunt in East Texas in the Shelby county area. where do you guys hunt?
>>33637506
I use Hog Wild-Wild Beast Attractant. It works really good mixed with deer corn
>>33637616
North of nacogdoches. On the way up to Henderson.

glhfdm
>>33637625
Where do you buy it? I'd like to try it.
>>33637633
God I hate those fuckers.
Did you know our state parks implemented a lottery system on hog hunts on public land last year? They said they were limiting hunts to grow the population and earn more revenue to help with the shortfall.
>>33637680
Fucking stupid. The State is considering baiting with poison. Tell me how this cognitive disconnect works?

>>33637506
rancid cord works pretty well from what I've heard, and old fruit
>>33637717
Rancid fruit? Interesting. I have some old strawberries. Might throw those in the mix.

Here's an amazon link. They might have it at tractor supply. The one I live by carries it.
I am leaning toward my Marlin 336. Just think it's a fun fun.
>>33637716
Not going to happen. Not with our budget shortfall this year.
>>33637788
Thanks. I'll check tractor supply.
>>33637826
Good point. Just a stupid idea in general though.
>>33637819
That's what I use
>>33637506
30-30 and 243. an AR/AK will work, but you need god-tier shot placement on an animal that never stands still. 30-30 will be much more likely to drop a hog on any given shot.
>>33637907
Ever made it though a shoulder with .243 and a lead bullet?
>>33637905
>>33637907
I am leaning towards the 30-30. A shot right in front of the shoulder should be easy mode.
>>33637916
The 243 is scoped. But you're right. It is probably under powered since a shoulder blade shot is likely.
I guess the ak and ar can just rain hell with all that capacity.
>>33637907
you do realize that 7.62x39 is very close to 30-30 right? 30-30 only has a little more velocity and delivered energy.
in any case your argument regarding shot placement actually favors a semi-auto.
>>33637966
Oh, no, I was legitimately curious. I'm looking a rifle in .243 for me and my kids, but I've heard it won't make it through without a premium bullet. So I wanted some first hand experience.
>>33637975
Check that bullet weight on the .30-30 again. Unless you're shooting slow 150gr Tula, they aren't as close as your expecting.
>>33637916
Yes, but it really depends on the hog. here in commiefornia you rarely see a hog over 200 lbs and 243 works excellently for this.
but those monster hogs in the south that eat nothing but gmo corn and are 300+ lbs ? no idea.
I'd love to go down to the deer lease and blast some hogs. Too bad I fucked things up with my uncle a while back and he pretty much controls who goes on the lease. Oh well.
>>33637988
I know it's great for deer. It's an excellent gun since shot placement is easy.
Can anyone else speak from experience here? Will a 243 go though a hog shoulder blade?
>>33637680
>God I hate those fuckers.
B-but they are delicious
>>33638175
Yeah man. I plan on eating them for sure.
>>33637905
nice target
>>33637506
.243 & .30-30
>>33638326
>>33638175
I heard they taste really gamey though, is there a way to get rid of it?
>>33637716
Why not employ 50 professional hog hunters and make a TV show out of it. Texas would love a public access channel with GoPro wearing hog assassins on 6 hours a day.
A show like that would excite Texans to shoot more hogs recreationally.
>>33644222
Pfft, gotta make it interesting. "20-25 hunters are equipped with different weapons each week to hunt down as many boar as possible"
Each week they get a new gun to work with:
AR-15 (different brands each time used sponsored)
Hi-Point
Glawk whatever
Ruger 10/22
.50 cal rifle
Full auto uzi
etc
Then each day they showcase a sponsored brand of ammunition.
>>33642019
the game is overstates, but they run a lot so they can be pretty tough meat
Best use is barbacue and slow roasting.
>>33637680
>lets destroy the park to have money to upkeep the park
Wow, a management bureau made of morons.
1. .243 will absolutely go through a shoulder, however, any bullet can deflect if at the perfect angle.
2. I would STRONGLY encourage you to NOT go stalking through the bush hog hunting unless you know goddamn well what you're doing. I caught a tusk that went through a rubber boot, denim and three inches of my calf. People underestimate feral hogs. They are dangerous. They are denser than lead, have a lower center of gravity than you & can and will fuck someone up if cornered or caught off guard. Hawaii has had feral hogs forever and every year hikers disappear in the jungle on Maui killed by pigs. People don't think and it's like being blindsided by a free safety shrunk down to a 2-foot tall battering ram.
3. As far as what to take I'd take the AK if its 762 and the 30-30. AR only if you're using 69-77 gr and even then I'd rather have something heavier hitting. If the idea is to cull the herd, you'll want the semi auto.
As far a gaminess of meat, yeah the boars especially aren't the tastiest. You can soak game meat in buttermilk overnight, that helps.
>>33637647
somehow i feel that it;s not really sportsmanship
>>33637506
IF you're baiting them, use the AR and AK, you will be shooting from a fixed position and the pigs will ideally stack up on the feed pile. You can maybe get a second or third shot off. It isn't necessarily about downing one nice one but mortally wounding as many as possible. If you have time make a pig pipe. Big ass PVC tube filled with deer corn, kool-aid, molasses, and a bit of old sweet tea, tethered somewhere sturdy. But hunt on that location that same night, because they'll tear it off and take it to a rooted up area if left alone with it.
The only person I know who goes for trophy sized pigs shoots a DPMS Sportical and earholes them at 50 yards. Ultimate fudd but the guy downs pigs with .223 Tula like it's his job. Don't overestimate pigs, they're not as tough as people make them out to be, but be aware that their shoulder is tough and their skull is angled like tank armor.
