To be fair Napoleon actually commanded in 7 wars, won the first 5, was narrowly defeated in the 6th then was finished off in the 7th.

Feel free to look it up, he was no loser.

Albert Kesselring was better to be quite honest
>>
>>33634067
What makes a commander a loser?

Does their nation losing the war, of which that specific person was only a small part of, wash away the previous successes?
Or does losing one engagement forever label you a failure? If so, nearly every commander in history is a loser.

Johannes Blaskowitz, one of those extremely correct types.Exerted firm control of his men about the correct treatment of civilians, complained about the SS troops fuckeries, got booted because of that. Came back later to occupied France, fought the allies in southern France, ended in northern occupied Holland, permitting allied food airdrops for the civilian population, and surrendered to the Canadians. He was charged with war crimes after the war, and even if everyone believed that he would be acquitted of all charges, he commited suicide by jumping from a building.

But what did it take for them to lose?

Most of the greats did amazing things until they ran out of resources or good ideas.

Udet's story is a sad one. Just wanted to fly and have fun (Maybe a little too much fun).
But he got sucked into politics and bureaucracy, things fell apart around him and he got blamed, and then he became a drunk.
Goering threw him under the bus and it killed him.

>In an era characterized by almost endless warfare, he led his armies as king from 1611 (at age 16) until his death in battle in 1632 while leading a charge—as Sweden rose from the status of a mere regional power to one of the great powers of Europe and a model of early modern era government. Within only a few years of his accession, Sweden had become the largest nation in Europe after Russia, Spain and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Some have called him the "father of modern warfare",[6] or the first great modern general. Under his tutelage, Sweden and the Protestant cause developed a number of excellent commanders, such as Lennart Torstensson, who would go on to defeat Sweden's enemies and expand the boundaries and the power of the empire long after Gustavus Adolphus' death in battle.

This guy is an actual great commander. And his book "On Guerrilla Warfare" is GOAT.

>The first documented, systematic study of guerrilla warfare, Mao Tse-tung's 1937 text remains the definitive guide to orchestrating revolution in developing countries. Based on Mao's own experiences in fighting Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists and his interpretations of the classic strategies of Sun-tzu, On Guerrilla Warfare outlines the tactics that have proven effective around the world, from Vietnamese jungles to Middle Eastern deserts.

>Prescient in his thinking and concise in his expression, Mao conceived of guerrilla operations as a complement to traditional warfare. He explains why guerrilla activities should be integrated into conventional military procedures and discusses the organization and operation of guerrilla units. His unorthodox strategies transform disadvantages into benefits: using retreat as an offensive maneuver; indoctrinating locals for employment as spies; and compensating for lack of firepower with speed, surprise, and initiative.

And really, he has never lost a war.

Sure he lost a number of battles.

But tactical retreats turned into strategic victories is pretty classic guerrilla warfare.

He understood that fighting pitched battles against a conventional force wasnt so good after all, and concentrated fully on guerrilla strategies from then on.

Rommel should never have been sent to Africa. The theater needed someone like Kesselring who could tie down the most Allies with the least shipping tonnage. Rommel would have been a wonderful general on the Eastern front.
>>
>this was the best thing for which Skorzeny had ever been responsible.

Goddamn I love Eisenhower.

>>33641639
It was a limited theater and a lot can be chalked up to Japan being awful at anything naval unless they are fighting Russians but Yi Sun-sin consistently went hard in the paint.
>>
>>33642325
A Certain amount of the resources allies sent for Africa were because of Rommels reputation and ability to push with tanks. While Rommel would have done well in the east I'm not sure Kesselring could do what Rommel did in Africa.
>>
>>33642218
Japanese did exactly that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Alls_Policy

And they still couldnt pacify China or destroy the communist gorrillas.

Killing civilians usually is a fairly shit way to pacify a country that has more people than you have occupational troops. Especially if your occupation also relies on a collaborist government of locals, who are actually secretly sympathetic with the cause of the resistance movement.
>>
>>33642218
>>33642524

We (the british) put everyone in the vicinity of guerillas in concentration camps, it was very effective.
Then the guerrilas would starve and eventually peter out, those who were captured be told where their families were, the ones who tried to organise non-cooperation would be hanged or had their balls crushed with pliers

The Agrippa Augustus bromance might be one of the greatest in history.
Apparently Augustus always thought he was going to die young due to how sick he had been since he was a child. But, when Agrippa died before him he was absolutely devastated since the only person he considered to be his friend and equal died before him. They were true brothers.

>>
>>33639370
Funny, because the exact same could be said for Patton. But you'll find no end to the number of fags who call him the best general in WWII.

At this point hating on Rommel has become an even bigger meme than Rommel himself. The only people who hate Rommel are the ones who think that holding an, equally inaccurate, opinion that runs contrary to popular belief someone makes them smarter than everyone else.
>>
>>33644270
>popular belief someone makes them smarter than everyone else.
Should be 'somehow' and not 'someone' here.
>>
>>33642325
The scariest part of the Afrika Corps were how they almost pushed to the Suez and opened the corridor to friendly Sryia, Iraq and Iran. That was mostly made possible due to Rommels tactics/strategy even with how much he overran his own supply lines.

While Kesselring would've done well just tying down troops, it would've still ultimately been forced to end via a Operation Torch that would've still come on a slightly different timeline. It's also highly doubtful that the addition of Rommel to the Eastern front would've changed the Outcome of Barborossa much but following operations could've seen huge changes.

The biggest implications from Rommel being on the eastern front possibly could've come from Stalingrad or Kursk in that the man was very well respected and Hitler actually favored him and his advice a lot. Less likely chance of losing the 6th Army for example.
