Fixed blade or nothing because strength is everything.
Swords are far more practical for a wider array of uses, but since you probably won't see any edged combat any time soon, stick to cold steel

This is probably bait but quality folding blade knives have comparable strength to fixed blade knives.

I use my Benchmade Adamas for EDC. I love the knife and it has never let me down.

Some of the best folders in the $200 to $300 range are made by Zero Tolerance and Spyderco, at lest modern folders.

ZT's recent knives EDC extremely well. For lightweight carry, I recommend the 0450 or 0460.
