To some degree, you're correct, at least as far as diminishing returns goes. You can find very serviceable guns in most any class for that amount. However, I would argue that the value in alot of guns above that price point is beyond simple utility. Look at the Unica 6, or anything HK, or higher end AR pattern rifles. Rarity, association, and customization have huge parts to play in the market. Also, fuck you it's my money.

There is indeed a point here. But a gun isn't something comparable to this argument, like a car.

A car has a very defined limit of usage and utility.

I pay for what I want. If I want a Garand because of its historical significance or another gun because of rarity, I'll pay for it. If I want something that is within your parameters and cheap, I'll get a Maverick 77 backed up by a .45 Hi-point or a cheap ass, lifeless AR compared to a gun with historical significance.

I'm less certain. Sure someone could probably do almost 80% of shooting activities with 3 (Glock 19, AR with rimfire conversion kit and also .30Rem AR upper in addition to its bog standard M4gery/A4gery upper, and Mossman 500 will let you do any shooting competition besides F class and niche shit, kill every game species on the planet, defend your home, defend the constitution, etc) but it's nice to have a subcompact pistol for carrying when you don't want to wear specific cover garments, and if you're serious about shotgun sports, you're probably going to want a dedicated trap shotgun, and you might want to turn your 3 AR uppers into their own rifles, and maybe you want to try Heavy Metal division, so you need a .45 and a battle rifle, and you might want a lighter hunting rifle for chasing game in the mountains, and it's easier to make a 4 lb 6.5 Creedmoor/7mm-08 from a bolt gun than a semi auto, and if you're chasing fur, a .17 will help your pelt prices, etc etc.

And all of that assumes you don't own anything out of nostalgia (grandfather's gun, the gun that killed your first deer, etc) or because you appreciate it's historical value.
