What is /k/s opinion on the 7mm Remington Magnum cartridge?

Sufficient for long range shooting?
Overkill?
Too damn expensive?
Better than .300WM?
>>
>>33582801
just get a .308 it's cheaper and more widely available
>>
>>33582835
But for precision shooting, not for going full dakka with a FAL or G3 or AR10
>>
> .280 175gr @ 2900 vs .300 200gr @ 3000 fps

Nothing you hit could tell the difference.

>>
>>33582882
well memed XD
>>
it's bretty fun to shoot
i'd err on getting something more commercially popular, easier on the wallet
>>
>>33582801
Excellent long range cartridge, but so is 270 Win.
>>33582835
It's also slow as fuck.
>>
>>33582918
Brass cased .308 is like 60cpr for decent stuff in bulk, 7mm is like .96cpr for decent stuff in bulk

I already have an AR and AK I put lots of volume through, I don't mind paying extra if it's a fun cartridge that hits hard, I'll just use less

I have a line on a really nice rifle in 7mm for $300, this thread here >>33582420 and want to figure out if I should go with it or something else
>>
>>33582939
Update, looks like on second blush, it's closer to 1.40cpr, pricey, but comparable to other big rounds
>>
>>33582801

Widely available. Better bc than 300WM.

Don't listen to the .308 guys.

If you want range and are on a budget, look at a 30-06 or 6.5x55.

If money's not that big a deal, get a 7mm Mag and enjoy yourself being able to tag any animal in North America.

Of course, if you want to be a special snowflake and shoot a real laser, you could find an old 8mm Rem Mag and A: kill anything B: make know-it-all fudds hate you.

In short: If you like it, and you're not hunting bear, get it.

If you plan on doing PRS style matches, 6/6.5 creedmoor, 6xc and .243 are what you seek.

If you just want to be able to hit shit at 1000 yards with good precision 7mm mag is fine, but there are better options that aren't belted.
>>
Just get a 6.5x55. Great at long range and you can take on any animal in north america. Just look at the Norwegians, they used it with great effect on polar bears(way bigger then any grizzly). Recoil is also soft.

7mm is fully approved to shoot at deer at distances under 100 yards in the Pennsylvania woods.

This Swede hunts with a blaser r93 in 6.5x55... (He does this for a living - could use any caliber he would want)
>>

OP didn't really specify what he was going to do with his rifle, but if he's planning on long(er) range hunting, both the 7mm and .300 magnums will keep significantly heavier bullets (160-200gr) above 2000fps past 6-700yards.

I don't believe any of the 6.5s, barring the 6.5 WSM, will push a 140gr bullet above 2000fps much past 500y.
>>
>>33586742
6.5 creedmoor does

>>
>>33586784
You're right. You'll get to 550y.
>>
>>33582801
One of my deer hunting cohorts uses his savage 7Mag. I use a .270Winrar. They both have similar terminal ballistics under 500 yards. Over 500yds, the 7mag is better than the .270, but he never shoots that far.
>>
>>33586838
How do you like the .270, anon. I avoided it for years because 'fudds and their low BC bullets', but now everyone seems to be making 150gr ammo.

How long of a barrel do you use, and can you safely download the cartridges for youth shooters?

Love it. I also have 30-06, .308, blah, blah blahh.
The 7mm mag Is a laser--will not disappoint.

I'd drink a beer with you.

Do you ever use the irons?
They any good?
>>
>>33582801
overkill if you are on the east coast, should be okay if you are out west. you should generally go with the least powerful round that will be able to make the shots you want to make. going with a more powerful round than you need to can discourage you from practicing with the rifle, both due to cost and aversion to excess recoil.
>>
>>33589090
Is $1 a round that bad?
I've never had an issue with polymer .308 and .30-06 rifles, is it that much worse?
