My question:
What makes a cleaning kit good? Half of my guns are historical (1939-1966), and I am PARANOID of scratching my barrels with my brass cleaning rods.

Do I need to worry about that barrel scratching?
What makes a cleaning rods safe to use (steel, strong, aluminum, good quality).
Should I but a boresnake, and are they safer?

Also, what's a good gun grease (I've been using remoil on all of the sliding points).

Sorry for the long question. My Google research isn't helping, and I'm the most knowledgeable gun person I know (family just don't care, and all my friends are poorfags). Thanks!

I know this is autistic but I need your help. I'm trying to think of how would a strong navy for an emerging, large third world nation that has now become first world and extremely wealthy would be like, think of countries like Indonesia or Brazil, let's say they suddenly became super rich and want a blue water fleet.

1 CVN: carrying 4 toucan turboprops, 8 imported F-35 and 12+ indigenous multi role fighters.
2 LHD/LHA: carrying all sorts of helicopters (utility, cargo, attack etc) as well as enough troops to storm a beach and take over a town
3 DDG: THAAD, dozens of cruise missiles, 120mm canons, it is as multirole as it can be.
10 FF: specializing in air defense, they carry THAAD, medium and short range AA and CIWs
10 CC: specializing in ASW, they carry a helicopter, rubber ducks, mines, buoys, UAV and UUV all all kinds of ASW shit
10 missile boats: each carrying some 6 or 8 AshM.
10 PC: other duties like mine sweeping and SAR (they would carry one UH)
3 SSBN: 16 conventional warheads each.
A few other ships, like tankers and troop transports.

What kinds of things am I missing here? What kinds of ships would you add? What kind of capabilities would this strong navy need?

Would would be a better scope for a .308, intended for mainly precision shooting, but also with capacity for hunting?
4-16 or 6-24. Another thing worth noting is these are both SFP scopes.
The 4-16's reticle is accurate at full zoom, but the 6-24 is only accurate at 18 zoom.
I'm thinking 4-16 might be the better option, but 6-24 may be better with FFP (which I cannot afford).

Additionally, how important is an illuminated reticle? The only difference between Vortex PST and HST's features is basically a slightly different reticle and the presence of illumination.

As of now I'm thinking Vortex Viper PST Gen 1 4-16x50 SFP EBR-1 MRAD is the best choice.

Thoughts gr8ly appreciated m8's

Obviously you aren't gonna leave your guns out in the elements like this guy did, but I switched from remoil because of this. I don't know if it rained during this period of time, but this guy sprayed washers with various lubricants, sprayed them with salt water and left them outside for almost a month and some of these look like shit, remoil being one of them. You can get details here:

>>
>>33584912
Yes.
>>
>>33584796
The best oil in the world won't help you if it doesn't cover everything.
I use remoil because it's fine mist gets into absolutely every nook and cranny. I'm not worried about surface rust nearly as much as those weird areas that it's easy to miss, like gaps between parts that will actually hold water if my gun gets wet.
Never had a slight bit of rust with remoil myself, but I also use my guns on the relatively regular and most are painted, not blued, and that's their best rust protection.
>>
>>33579309
You can try putting some rubberized grip tape on the hump to minimize the bite. It's pretty common though.
>>
>>33584362
Tons, if your looking for a hybrid then check out theis holster for leather. Stealthgear is great for muggy weather since the backing is breathable. N82 is neoprene and super comfy if hot and humid isn't your climate.

>>
>>33584392

>>
>>33579309
>Glock grip sucks
Yes that is normal, for every model they make. You can "learn to live with it" and convince yourself that a CCW isn't supposed to be easy to shoot like most Glock fans, or find a pistol that fits your hand.
>>
>>33584549
>>33585291
>>33586177
Well, that's good to know. I don't want to resort to altering the grip itself yet. I'm going to try finding some adapter that fills out the top portion of the grip first, or use some tape. In fact, I think I'd rather buy a new gun before I start doing some of those reduction mods I've seen.

Thanks for the answers.

FFP is much better, at least at moderate to high magnification.

Honestly, I wouldn't even consider the 4-16x50 sfp unless it was a steal.

Finally, the 'murican market is starting to see more FFP scopes, even on the lower end.

I love my Athlon FFPs for chicom cheapies. BUT, I don't crank turrets once zeroed. I'm sure their mechanicals are pure crap for repeatability.

JHP for rifles exist, but they are primarily for target practice where FMJ might be a problem. At velocities over 2000fps, spire point bullets expand more rapidly than pistol JHP.

>>33593786
From one of my gunsmithing books in the "Revolver Repairs" section, I found something that I think describes your problem.

>Hammer Block
>In some of the older model s&w revolvers, the hand is not held under tension against the extractor by means of a spring in the trigger, but instead is so held by a ping and spring, which are retained in the side plate by meansof the hammer block. This hammer block, in addition to its aforementioned function, also serves as an incorporated safety by preventing the hammer from going forward all the way unless the trigger is at its maximum rearward position.
>The hand, in these models, can be recognized by the beveled flange on the side which contacts the side plate.
>If the cylinder in these models does not rotate when the hammer is cocked, then it is most probable that the hand is not being forced against the ratchet by the spring-actuated pin. To remove these parts for inspection and subsequent cleaning, oiling, or replacement, press down on the hammer block just above the point where the pin protrudes, and the pin and spring will jump out.

Also may be a worn sear or whatever. Basically, take off the side plate to inspect the action or take it to a competent gunsmith.

How much ammo and what kind of targets should I bring? I know this is a dumbfuck question but I'd rather my first time not be shitty and halfassed

I have an infinite supply of cheap foamies from work and I'm used to wearing them and they're quite effective so that's what I always wear. If you don't have foamies, don't like them, or don't want to buy them, you can get cheap over-ears for <$20 and they'll last you forever. Use both for best results.

What does it mean when ammo has different grain? And is more = better?
>>

Grain is bullet weight. More means the bullet will be slower given the same energy. Depending on what you're trying to do, their are advantages and disadvantages to both heavier and lighter bullets.

weight.

more powder grain = more powder
more bullet grain = heavier bullet

I got two bullets on a flea marketfor a few bucks. One is according to the old man some Armor-piercing shell from the Wehrmacht (looks like pic) and the other one a Dragunov bullet.

I just threw them into my pocket and went home. Currently they are sitting in my shelf but now I'm not so sure anymore if they arent quite dangerous.

Question:
Can they go off from touching, direct sun, if i drop them or something like that? Dont want some bullet randomly going off and injuring or killing me. Tat would be a quite stupid story to tell.

I want to get rid of them. Can I safely bring them to the police or should I better call them to pick it up?

Fueling the vehicle will be your prime concern. Honestly, the best vehicles would be ones that ran off of a power source you could produce yourself. The best SHTF vehicle IMO would be something that runs off electricity--relatively easy to acquire with solar or a dam--but is still somewhat rugged. They used to make an electric Ford Ranger, that would probably be near my top choice. Maybe an electric, motorized bicycle.

Also, some old engines can be converted to run on wood with a gasifier. Those are even more sustainable, though the amount of work to travel time is pretty bad. Look at this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ag6LoqcVsM

Now, assuming you have access to gasoline some fucking how (maybe you DO have a refinery for all I know), I'd say the best SHTF vehicle is the Jeep Wrangler. Not for its quality--I know many /out/fags hate them--but because it's decently rugged and incredibly common. Sure, some special snowflake range rover or whatever might be a better vehicle, but good luck scavenging parts for it. The Jeep is decently rugged and well-constructed, has a lot of aftermarket add-ons like winches and brush guards you'll need, and above all, if a part breaks you can easily find another Jeep to scavenge it from.
>>
>>33603676
Well, you kind of can. One-on-one instruction by a skilled teacher can teach you things you can't teach yourself. They'll point out little issues in your form that were hampering you, that you didn't even know you had, and teach you tricks of the trade you wouldn't think of or discover on your own. Also, they'll accelerate the learning process.
>>
>>33594966
EAA Windicator has excellent reviews for its price. It's a solid gun.

However, their quality control isn't great, and your experience may vary. Unfortunately mine isn't very accurate, and has a weird issue with the double action.
>>
>>33594500
Plenty of reasons.
>Your area is being overtaken by violent looters or gangs
>Your area has been over-hunted and over-foraged by increasingly desperate survivors, you want to move to somewhere with more food
>A natural disaster makes it uninhabitable, you need to run from wildfire/flood/whatever--there will be a lot of those if nuclear weapons alter the weather patterns of Earth
>many more...

Also, there are many other benefits to a vehicle besides mobility for yourself:
>Towing and hauling things like wood/mulch
>Use as a tractor to help around the farm
>Quick response within your community to help fellow survivors--be the ambulance, in exchange for goods of course
>Any applications in trying to rebuild, where you need to apply a lot of force somehow and don't have construction equipment--be creative. Use a vehicle and a pulley to improvise a crane for instance
>>
>>33603737
Anon, i think that may just be the best SHTF argument in favor of a jeep that anyone has made.

It's something to consider even for normie vehicles.

My vehicle buying advice to all poorfags is, get any Ford from like 1993-2003. They're decent cars, new enough for fuel injection but not taken over by computers. Shit will break, sure, but the shit that breaks on old Fords is usually easy to fix, the important shit like transmission/frame/engine is usually solid. And every junkyard is fucking inundated with them, so you can get most any replacement part you need for like 20 bucks.

However, like >>33594437 said it's no good at all unless you have a refinery in your backyard.

Hi /qtddtot/,
I just got back from my first range trip ever today, and I have to ask, is it normal to feel like you can't hit the broad side of a barn? I must have gone through 150 rounds through my SKS, and I landed 4 hits on a target 50 yards away. Maybe I just don't have it zero'd right, and at the end I set up three targets vertically and aimed for the middle target. All the shots landed high, is it just technique? Me being a novice? I still flinch after each shot, is that fucking up my aim? Help me, /k/.

>>
>>33606366
Because a brand new good quality SKS is $420 US and it would probably become acceptably profitable somewhere over $1000.
This, plus the fact that Norinco could run out another million whenever they want for much cheaper and you never know what's going to happen with US import law, make domestic repros unlikely. Maybe in thirty years.

Could anyone recommend some firearm alternatives when it comes to personal protection?

I usually carry a gun, and have my holster etc.. have been doing so for years; when I'm going out, or going to work etc... however, if I'm just taking out the trash, or picking up the mail, or having a smoke with my morning coffee on a weekend, or having a drink outside on a particularly nice day; I'm usually not wearing pants with a belt-loop; you know how it is; sweatpants and basketball shorts type situations.

I'm well aware of the concept of 'knives' and I guess that's my current stopgap, but what exactly now-a-days is the next best thing to a gun if you don't have enough space to carry one? (all my pistols are fullsize, nothing I have is pocket portable; I also have big fat hands and the little switches on your typical 'smaller' pistols [e.g. glock/m&p/various derringers etc] are somewhat tricky to use for me, I mean I CAN use them, but, not quickly and reliably) Other than knives.

pic unrelated
>>
>>33612163
You can't just do that with a lower that was sold as a rifle. If you want an AR pistol, you're options are either to buy a dedicated pistol lower, or to buy an 80% lower which is not yet a firearm, finish it, and then use it as a pistol. It IS legal to turn a normal virgin lower into a pistol- but you have to keep it that way and not put a stock on it. Guns laws amitirite?

Oh I ain't got anything against knives, I was just wondering if there was "anything better" for my situation.

Now my neighborhood isn't "bad" or anything, I'm not particularly worried about going out there unarmed; I was just wonderin if there was anything new out there that might be worth a look; I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for a nice small pistol with big easy to operate controls, but frankly haven't found anything that really clicked yet, I've got plenty of knives, and certainly do slip one in my pocket when I'm just stepping out like I was talking about.

I don't really see knuckles or gloves being more effective than knives, and I don't reckon slipping a fuckin ninja star in my pocket is a good idea (for my pocket itself OR my hand if I'm reaching into my pocket quickly in an emergency; also I'm no boxer or ninja, plain old knife will certainly do better by me than any ninja stars or punching enhancing implements.

Situational awareness, living in a decent neighborhood, or just wearing pants outside the home like an adult.
Slip some mace or a knife in your pocket I guess but there's just not going to be a substitute for a gun if you get caught with your pants down. Is getting mugged on your porch while enjoying your morning coffee a realistic concern?

As long as the safety is reasonably operable I'm happy, with the kind of scenario I'm describing, i sure wouldnt ve carrying a spare mag or moonclip (if i go the revolver route)
>>
>>33613960
ruger lc9s (9mm) and ruger lcp (380) are the most competitive high quality thing I would possibly qualify as a "saturday night special" if weight is also large concern, being as you can find it for possibly 250-300 dollars at almost any gun store, they are super slim and lightweight, the trigger is crisp but I have no memory of how easily the safety is operated. The crisp break of the trigger helps fight difficulty of firing a small gun but I have never fired the 380.

Maybe a neck knife? When I'm lounging around the house I have a pair of tru-spec elastic shorts that I wear commando with no belt, I keep an EDC knife and a mousegun in them at all times. I rarely wash them, so they are ready to go whenever I get home and chill.
>>
>>33612163
No. To convert it to a pistol you have to cut up the receiver and weld it back together, such that you have technically manufactured a new firearm. Better to just buy a pistol lower.
>>
>>33611131
Either will work, soft point is preferred. Check your zero.

>>33610192
Yes, but you don't want one.

Being able to shoot ambi is great, but you still want to use both hands. COD is not a substitute for range time.

>>
>>33612163
Once a firearm is legally a rifle, it is always a rifle. In the case of AR-15s the lower is legally the firearm's receiver.
You could either SBR your current lower or you must purchase a virgin lower that has never been a rifle and build that into a pistol.

If I put a scout rail on a Mosin or Mauser, and then put one of these extended scope mounts on it, could I use a normal scope? I know this would keep me from using stripper clips, I'd have to use a cheekpad, it would probably be fucked if I dropped it on the scope, and the Larue mounts are worth more than a nugget by themselves.

Yeah, it'd be expensive as all fuck, but it's soft and malleable and shit. Would the ballistics be fucky? Someone pls answer.

It could, but why would you? You can shoot fuckin Lego heads (they are actually .40 caliber) out of guns. Silver is less accurate and lighter than lead in addition to being vastly more expensive. Silver at least is useful for killing werewolves.

Is there any good source for mechanical drawings for really obscure parts? I'm looking for the design drawings of a Hartson loader as an excuse to get myself a Martini Henry and go a little crazy and build the loader for added insanity.

Does anyone make/made a fairly large bulky laser with a picatinny mount or other? I've got some retro style pistol I am working on and want a huge ass maybe even HeNe laser for it. Something old or old styled that will mount. Big, blocky, power hungry, all that fun.

Is there a good time of year to buy 45-70 govt? I'm in the process of acquiring a scoped 1885 high wall and am looking for the cheapest possible ammo to buy.

My local dealer's cheapest stock is no less than $40 per 20-round box. Average price online is around $1.50 but I can find it for around $.95/round. Does it get any cheaper at one point in the year?

Later than that. You ought to just get into reloading and get some .458 bullet molds if you want to have cheap .45-70.
>>
>>33618063
>>33617635
Further, if you get an expensive single-shot scoped rifle such as the 1885, you may as well develop loads specifically for your purposes, so handloading is truly your best option.

Heard this a while ago and its helped me immensely.

1. place your palms over your ears
2. rest your index and middle fingers on the back of your head, right at the base of your skull.
3. lightly tap that area for 30 seconds to a minute. It depends on how bad your case is but do this every day if you feel it helps you.

Some people like my self claim to feel the effects immediately, others it takes awhile.

Not that anon but most repros aren't made at all to spec and are running on the same thing fueling the STG44 repro meme. They arent the same gun, you're better off finding a parts m1carbine for like 300 bucks and getting it put into proper spec by a gunsmith for another 100 than wasting your time with that shit.
t. someone who bought a repro and can't get it to cycle more than 1 round at a time despite having several friends and gunsmiths check it out. Worst decision I ever made.

First time posting here so go easy on me. Just for reference, I live in Florida.

My mother wants to buy me an expensive gun as a gift and she insists on buying it completely on her own from the internet(she is weird and likes trying new things). I explained how buying guns online worked and she told me to find a gun online and that she will buy it and have it shipped to a local FFL where she wants to pick it up. The gun is a PTR91 and I was wondering if the FFL would give her any shit over buying the gun as a gift for her son, or outright deny her the sale or something? She is a little nervous about it because of her unassuming figure buying such a "big gun".

Keep in mind, she has not committed a crime in her life and neither have I. She is buying it with HER money as a gift for me.
>>
>>33586445
I keep seeing one at gun shows here. They want 1400 for it tho. So tempting
>>
>>33622567
Probably depends on the FFL.
>>
>>33617184
Tried searching for spent shells before, unfortunately I'm probably the only one there with a .300 win mag that's a regular. Haven't seen any brass besides .223 and .308.
>>
>Be me
>Nogunz, been doing my research, narrowing the list of potentials down
This isn't another "wut gun do get for first time /k/?" question. Rather, I'm having trouble navigating the bureaucracy. You obviously don't need an FFL to just BUY a gun, but what kind of license do you need? I'm looking at the ATF website at the resources section, and I can't find much info on the process. Do you just need to fill out a 4473 beforehand, or is there a physical license that you carry in your wallet?

What would Hornady's LEVERevelution .357 and 44 mag ammo be like out of a revolver? I understand its designed for lever action rifles.
>>
>>33623679
It would work just fine, I don't see why it wouldn't.
>>
>>33623358
It is state dependant. For most states you just walk in, fill out 4473, have background check, and you're done.

Other states require a physical license you need to apply for before purchase.

So...where do you live?
>>
>>33624043
Rhode Island. Is there a resource where I could find the info I need, and save you the work?
>>
>>33624132
Yeah, the gun store you plan to buy from.

Shop around and pick out the gun you'll want. Then, call the store and explain. Tell them that'll be your first gun and you don't know what paperwork you need to do. They'll be happy to help--and if they're not, take your business somewhere else.
>>
I'm not sure I understand the rules here in the US, maybe I'm missing something. Would a fire control system that required the operator to pull the trigger X times and then fire X times basically buffering up trigger pulls be a machine gun?
>>
>>33621366
Low $400's is a pretty decent price....over 500 had better come with accessories
>>
>>33622567
>it's an actual question on the form

Legally, you're going to have trouble....if your mother buys the gun for you and it's going to be in your name, you have to be there to pick it up. If she buys it for herself, she can go about one of two ways; she can buy it and let you (permanently) borrow it, or go to an FFL with you to transfer it to you .....I'd recommend just going along with her to pick it up, or they will request the actual recipient (you) to be there for the background check
>>
>>33624876
I wont have legal issues, the question asks if you are buying the gun with someone else's money, not if you are buying it as a gift. Legally as long as its her money and not mine, we are good. Plus, in Florida you dont have to do FFL transfers to give someone a firearm.
>>
>>33623379
>Your 1911 dreams about you too
>She wonders why you don't hold her like you used to
>She knows you've been with another gun

Take the easy way out, give her some attention....even if it's not permanent
>>
>>33624132
Go and talk to somebody at the gun store...they should have all the info you need, but just like >>33624338 said, if the one you go to doesn't, move on
>>
>>33624898
It asks if you are the actual transferee
>>
>>33624338
Thanks a lot.
>>
>>33625141
But that person would be the actual transferee. If she bought the gun online under her name with her money, then went to go pick it up she would be the person receiving the firearm. She then would bring it home and gift it to me on my birthday. My question was more or less asking if the FFL themselves would be fishy about the deal considering she knows barely anything about firearms and is a little old lady.
>>
>>33625405
They wouldn't/couldn't care less.....they've probably seen many people do similar things. What I'm trying to say is that if she admits to be buying it for somebody else, that FFL cannot legally go through with the transfer
>>
>>33625590
The most recent handgun purchase I did was with my mom, buying her a HD gun. The shop had her fill out the form, but offered to let me do it instead if I had a CCW since it would "be faster that way" I don't have a CCW since my state has constitutional carry but they really couldn't care less.
As she was filling out the form and reading slowly through it he straight showed her how to fill it out, like "check yes on the first box and no on every remaining box or I can't sell you the gun" were the exact words out of his mouth. If you go to a locally run place they really don't give a shit at all
>>
>>33625722
This is very true...as long as the paperwork is filled out correctly, nobody cares

What are things to consider when thinking of picking up a .22lr rifle?

When I'm lurking, it seems that the Ruger Takedown is a decent choice.

Thoughts?
Considerations?
>>
>>33628443
Same as any gun really, just check the bore, work the action a few times, take your time with the sights and see if you like them etc

if you can shoot one beforehand it would really help, you can go to a renting range and try a bunch of stuff then shop around for low prices
>>
>>33628443
Ruger Takedowns are kind of a SHTF meme. 10/22s in general suffer from dodgy quality control, and have an utterly shit disassembly for how simple the gun actually is.
