Can someone explain PDW (Personal Defense Weapons) to me?
Why not just an SMG? And if not an SMG, why not just a pistol?
>>33570710
a PDW is a sub machinegun. It's a really compact submachine gun, alot of time in little oddball calibers
>>33570710
PDW is a meme started by Battlefield to sell more """battle packs"""
>>33570710
A PDW is an SMG in an allegedly not-weaksauce caliber.
>>33570710
Hard to say, considering most firearms marketed as "PDWs" fire a cartridge that is also usable in a pistol or rifle, which would make them no different from SMGs and carbines, respectively. I think the MP7 is one of few that uses a proprietary cartridge.
>>33570710
PDWs are SMGs and Pistols.
PDWs aren't the weapons, they're the bullets.
The Five-Seven is a PDW because it fires 5.7
The concept evolved in the 80s when the Soviets were starting to roll out large amounts of cheap body armor, and NATO militaries were worried that vehicle crewmen wouldn't be able to defend themselves effectively with handguns.
So there became a niche for extremely compact weapons designed around armor piercing capabilities.
Of course, the USSR fell, and then the M4 Carbine took over the same niche much more effectively, so now PDWs are a technological dead end.

It's basically for bodyguard / VIP protection duty. It has to be concealable because of the nature of the role, so it has to be small. This limits your options. However, your engagement range is same room and probably under 20 feet so you don't really need a long barrel to properly stabilize rounds or worry about velocity loss over distance. Also, your expected use case doesn't give you time or really require you to aim beyond pointing in the right direction, because you're compensating for the tiny-ass barrel length by just hosing down the general direction with an insane ROF.
In this situation, an SMG would be too large and bulky, and a pistol wouldn't give you the benefit of full-auto spray that alleviates the requirement for proper shot placement.

Non-meme answer is that PDWs were designed to be ultra compact weapons capable of defeating body armor, for issue to rearline troops.
Up until carbines and ultra-short carbines become really ironed out, rearline and vehicles crews still often carried SMGs. US tankers for example carried the M3 Grease gun for decades until they got real 5.56mm carbines. In the event of a force-on-force war against an enemy wearing body armor, thinking was that SMGs just wouldn't cut it, so you get PDWs.
PDW calibers are necked down pistol sized calibers. They are to pistol calibers what assault rifle calibers are to full sized rifle calibers. You get the high velocity and hence extra penetration by using a smaller and lighter projectile.
I *personally* think they are a fucking meme in 99% of applications because you could just use a short 5.56mm carbine, but there ya go.
>>33570807
Makes sense for people like the Secret Service
>>33570807
>US tankers for example carried the M3 Grease gun
Fuck yeah, my dad used to gush all the time about that thing.
Said he couldn't hit shit with it, but he felt like a badass with it
>>33570823
I think any reasonable person has a soft spot in their heart for the Grease Gun
>shoots smooth as butter
>retard simple
>cost five bucks to manufacture
>>33570784
>In this situation, an SMG would be too large and bulky
Wat
There's tons of small SMGs.
Also there's no functional difference between PDWs and SMGs, considering most PDWs fire a pistol or rifle cartridge anyway.

PDW
Personal Defense Weapon
Weapon
>Its the bullets guys
An AR57 is not a PDW
>>33570865
>AR57
What the absolute fuck is that and why am I so sickened by it?
>>33570807
>you could just use a short 5.56mm carbine
kek
here we go again
>>33570710
just think smg but with spitzer bullets
>>33570710
PDW= defensive weapon as name states
Powerful enough for close protection, light and compact enough for easy carrying, but not great for offensive actions, but with shorty ARs, that has changed a bit.
>>33570896
Not even trying to start a "oh here we go" sitc. There are applications for PDWs, but they are extremely niche. I know this. In many applications though, especially conventional military, issuing an ultra short carbine that shares the service caliber just makes way more sense.
>>33570710
because you're playing the engineer class dickhead.
>>33570710
I bought an AR 15 carbine for home defense, and spent three times as much as a maverick 88 would have been. Tell my why I fucked up.
>>33570807
>>33570896
like dis ?
>>33570962
I agree, but there are many PDWfags who need to justify their exorbitant purchases.
>>33570879
>He doesn't have dual clips for non stop warfare
>>33570710
The theory is to make tankers and pikots capable of keeping up with modern carbines in a combat situation
Rifle cartridges will always out perform handguns
>>33570865
I've seen that crazy muzzle brake before but I don't remember where
>>33570851
PDWs popped up because the smg's at the time weighed as much as rifles
>>33571042
Fun thing about AR57s is that you can remove the follower and spring from a mag and catch a mag worth of brass in it.
>>33571056
Oh, you want a crazy brake?

>>33571074
Why do people feel the need to go in to a thesaurus and look up words that people havent used in a hundred years?

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but you're fucking wrong nigger.
>>33571056
FG42
most troops don't need a big heavy rifle. so people keep thinking up new weapons that these troops can use to shoot at people in the kind of close range combat they are likely to get in.
all obsolete once intermediate cartridge select fire rifles were made standard.

>>33570710
a pdw is a rifle caliber weapon meant to allow engagements at traditional small arms ranges, but in a compact package to allow it to be fieldedby soldiers who have other dutiys..like piloting a aircraft, or a tnak.
I have read that they are short so vehicle crews can use them. People who are not likely to be engaging in combat.
They're pretty much the same as smg's though but most PDW's are bullpup I think
PDW is not a type of weapon, it's a role a weapon fills. Just like sniper's rifle.
>>33571269
Reported for homophobia.
>>33571207
That's it, thanks.
They're compact weapons for people who have no business getting into firefights. They're usually smgs so the user has the ability to lay down covering fire while escaping.
>>33570710
>Can someone explain PDW (Personal Defense Weapons) to me?
>Personal Defense Weapons
This is where you went wrong. PDW means Planetary Destructive Weapon.
Its vital everybody have one in a proper libertarian society, so that you can prevent the NAP from being violated.
>>33570865
Any idea about manufacturer/model of that muzzlebrake? I want one.
>>33570710
I always figured PDW always had some stupid propriety ammo that was meant to penetrate body armor, shit like FN's 5.7, HK's 4.6, KAC's 6mm. That Magpul is called a Personal Defense Rifle because it fires 5.56
>>33570865
>>33570879
I want to see an AR57 upper with the CQR stock and grip.
>>33570995
>no front sight
???
>>33571963
>firing port weapon
>front sight
>>33571976
but he's up top
>>33571868
That mag length though. The barrel length in your image is only 7" while a 57 upper necessitates a 16" barrel.
>>33572000
How would a front sight fit through the firing port?
>>33572020
maybe make it flip up or something
>>33572020
Sideways.
>>33570732
>started by Battlefield
>a term for a compact and concealment focused long arm for vehicle crews and body guards explored as far back as the 60's
Am I being memed here?
>>33570710
>And if not an SMG, why not just a pistol?
why not just a rifle?*
>>33571868
Not gonna lie, I really don't care for accessorizing my ar out of what it already has but goddammit, that stock set looks so neat especially with the pmag 60
I want one of those with a MAWL.
Ok retards it's really fucking simple
Back then,
>rifles kill good, but are large
>smg suck but are small
>lets make something in between
Now a day
>Just use a fucking m4 you twat.
PDW's are for POG's.
>>33571963
M231 Firing port weapon was Open bolt operation with a cycle rate of 200-1225rpm it could only fire on full-auto where as a M4A1 has a cycle rate of 700-950 and could be select fired.
it was practical to walk rounds onto the target during the 200 cycle rate than to bother with a front sight post.
>>33572836
same poster, also it was only issued with Tracer ammo. Also note that there's no rear sight on the carry handle (no holes for wind adjustment or rear sight fixture rotation) it was literally just a carry handle with the U channel cut out
>>33572549
That isn't what a PDW is, PDW's are somewhere between a pistol and an SMG.
You incorrect twat.
>>33570710
Anyone got any info on the CBJ MS? It was a Swedish ODW unread about ages ago, but i couldn't ever find much info about it other than a brief Wikipedia page.
A discarding sabot firing PDW that can be converted to a LSW using a 100 round mag and capable of penetrating lightly armoured vehicles.
>>33572475
>why not just a rifle?*
At least suggest something with a fucking folding stock, you retard.
Buffer tubes are cancer for PDWs.
>>33570995
Friend of mine who was in the canadian forces once told me about these.
He said that they would go missing from american bradleys constantly because people would steal them for house to house fighting.
One of the platoons in his battalion had acquired one through suspect means and cherished the fucker like it was made of gold.
>>33570865
fug, why do i want this?
>>33572891
>>33572836
neat thanks for the info anon.
>>33571074
Thompson SMG ~ 10.5lbs,
M1 Garand ~ 9.5lbs,
M1 carbine ~ 5lbs.
yeah, no. You're retarded.
