Why do people say katana's aren't good stabbing weapons? They're stabby as fuck.
>>
>>33562685
Because people think something good at slashing can't thrust (katana) and something good at thrusting can't cut (rapier).
>>
>>33562685
>'s
>>
>>33562707
>slashing your opponent with any part other than the exact tip

Lol might as well declare car radio antennas as deadly weapons

Because there are basically two types of katana: 太刀 and 打刀. 太刀 is more curvy and not quite suitable for stab. 打刀 is less curvy and more suitable for stab.

You picture is more likely 打刀 which is more straight and suitable for stab.
>>
>>33562685
Same reason why people say 1911's aren't killy. They're killy as fuck!
>>
>>33562685
Autism usually.
>>
>>33562707
>something good at thrusting can't cut (rapier).
Or people think something without an edge can't cut.
>>
>>33563317
Most rapiers have edges and can cut hombre.
>>
People probably think that you don't thrust with a katana because you don't practice thrusting in kendo. That's really just because a limitation in the training sword, it's too dangerous to thrust so you could hurt people. So people just go full autist and think that they're bad at thrusting so no one bothers with it.

They are pretty decent for thrusting actually.
>>
>>33563461
Not that anon, but even rapiers with an edge perform really poorly at cutting - sure they can do it, but it's far from optimal.
As for stabbing with a katana - sure. You can stab with basically any pointy object, but the katana will obviously underperform in that capacity when compared to a design more suited for the task, i.e. Oakeshott XV - XVIII

Holy weeb
>>
>>33562685
katana is a shitty weapon from a country that was at the time millenia behind the west in terms of metallurgy and weapons tech

only reason why katana is so popular is because of retarded weebshits and muuh japanese "culture"
>>
>>33563640
I never said they'd be good at it. Just that they could do it.
>>
>>33563658
HAve teh japs tried making katana out of KRUPP STEEL yet?
>>
>>33563317
Rapiers do have edges. They're not as good at cutting compared to a katana, but they can cut. Rapiers are optimized for thrusting.

Wasn't the wakizashi historically used with the point to defeat armor ?

I can stab with my saber, and it has an 8cm curve. Hardly optimal, but doable. It's a little too flexible fof that though.
Pic related.

there's a lot more though. over the years designs for the katana changed, and this isn't including the various tip/edge changes such as moroha-zukuri

The only people you'll see talk shit about a katana have never handled one.
It's autistic meme rambling about what they hear is effective and not.

>>33563989
Because if you could afford a wakizashi you could afford a katana, if you could afford a katana you would probably be able to afford a horse and bow. All these katana vs non katana shit is about "fighting fair" memes and other crap. Life isn't fair. A samurai was a horse mounted archer with swords as backup. He'd probably have a bunch of guys with bows or guns or some other formation to attack with getting to melee would be for some poor chump wanting to be respected more than a worthless parasite or working fields planting food. The west was no different and they would of lost vs samurai because samurai were horse archers and a calvary charge with lances would get decimated. After the first 1 or 2 times that happened they would of started doing war different. Did you hear about calvalry charges from the Western Roman Empire before the mongols pushed east? The mongols simply did was the Japanese did except better. Japan was a vacuum of a lot of people locked in a small area doing war against one another. The mongols out classed anything else in terms of taking over territory in any amount of time, only Alexander came close and he couldn't get anywhere near china because he used infantry that would of got destroyed by cav archers.

>>33564861
Of course there are more sub groups, but "generally" there are indeed "basically two" types of katana: The curvy one such as 太刀; The less curvy one such as 打刀. Everything else are more likely the derivation or variation of these types of curvy blades, which exactly becomes the unique traits of Japanese swords and distinguish them from their Chinese 直刀 ancestors.

Scalpels are made of the most shitty steel, yet they are perfect tools.

I'm not westerner.
>>
>>33565886
I disagree. Modern katanas come in 3 flavors.
1: authentic. Made in Japan by Japanese.
2: sinken. Made anywhere, probably China.
3.Wall hanger. made anywhere, probably China.
>>
>>33565914
shinken*
live blades
Probably even better than ww2 mass produced copies even if they're mass produced. Both are intended as actual weapons.
>>
They're curved. That's pretty much it. Straight blades are (in general) much better for stabbing than curved ones. So even though a katana can be used for thrusts it's not /as good/ as other swords, and over time and repetition "not as good" has permuted to "not good".

>The Japanese then made their way into the great cabin, briefly holding the captain-major hostage and carrying off his writing desk before being repelled.

>The Portuguese were able to fend off the smaller crafts with hand grenades, but they made little effect on the floating tower, which grappled the poop deck.[35] Up to this point the Portuguese casualties had been few, with only four or five Portuguese along with a few Africans and lascars killed,[36] while the Japanese dead were estimated at several hundred.

You still don't get it, I'm talking about the historical evolvement and origins of Japanese swords.

Japanese swords basically are descended from ancient Chinese swords. Before 8th century, most Japanese swords were either imported from China (唐大刀) or replicated from Chinese swords (唐樣大刀 ), which mostly were straight (直刀) and look exactly like ancient Chinese straight swords. Japanese call the swords from this period as 上古刀.

Japanese only developed unique curvy shapes(e.g. 太刀Taichi) and different forging techniques after Heian period, but the base is still Chinese single edged straight swords.
>>
>>33565914
Actually, all 3 types are made in China/India,sometimes in the same factory.

>>33562685
mostly they mean stab against some kind of armour, most curve blades will do fine against naked flesh

So tactical katanas and ninjato swords did actually exist.
>>
>>33562685
I agree OP, dont listen to anyone else. They arent trained swordsmen like us, they dont have any experience with this prime example of a sword. I just stabbed my dogs with it. Pshh, rapier fags best be jealous.
>>
Katanas are the greatest weapon ever made.
I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.
Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.
Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.
Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.
>>
>>33562685
I don't want to get stabbed with one, it might go through me.
>>
>>33567078
The katana is the sharpest sword in the world. Armor probably wouldn't stand up to it

Depends on the kind of rapier. Early rapiers were closer to broadswords than to smallswords. Later ones became the long and thin examples you normally think of when you hear "rapier".
