Alright, /k/omrades. Im moving to Alaska for a few months and am looking for a rifle to hunt/protect myself from big animals whilst innawoods. Thinking about a Henry 45-70 or cheap bolt gun. Trying to keep rifle under 500 but have a special place in my heart for a 45-70 henry. Any suggestions?
>>
>>33559690
get a shotgun, retard
>>
>>33559719
This. More versatility, cheaper price, and you can achieve the same result with a 12 gauge slug as a 45-70
>>
>>33559690
If you want a 45-70 just because you want a 45-70, get one, but >>33559719 is right. You can pick up a Mossberg 500 for around $300 easy.
>>
>>33559690
.45-70 is beyond sexy, but if you're strapped for cash a simple pump action shotgun is by far the better option both in terms of ammunition and gun cost.
>>
Where in Alaska?
>>
>for a few months and am looking for a rifle to hunt

Nothings really open right now except for maybe spring bears. I don't hunt them because bear meat is not that good and real sketchy to cook.
>>
Alas/k/an here

honestly bear spray is your best bet, but as backup, I'd suggest a Marlin 1895, preferably one of the shorter barrel ones. A lot of Alaskans really like them for being affordable, light, handly 45-70 brush guns.

>Alas/k/an here
>honestly bear spray is your best bet,
Guess you must have missed the bear attacks in Southeast last year when both times they had bear spray, they weren't allowed to carry guns due to work related.

Fellow Alas/k/an, can confirm. My 18" marlin is a sexy bitch, and my go-to for Inna woods... Also, pic.
>>
>>33559879
Lol a slug can't touch hot 45-70
>>
>>33559690
Shotgun or .308 bolt-action rifle with iron sight.
Effective enough and ammo are cheaper.
>>
>>33559690
Henrys are shit in anything buy .22lr. At least buy a Marlin in .45-70 because it has a loading gate.

Then again, you don't want to spend more than $500, but you do realize 45-70 is expensive as fuck, right? Why not .30-30? Kills shit just as dead for half the cost of .45-70. There's no point buying a gun you can barely afford to feed and thus can't practice with often.
>>
just get an AR-15

45-70 is too big for your first gun IMO
>>
>>33562959
>Henry's are shit
Wrong

Savage Hog Hunter in .308
>>

>link a vid showcasing it

It's a piece of shit
>>
Get a Marlin 336. Cheaper ammo and will kill burrs just fine
>>
>>33563205
>short stroking is the same as ftf
Kys
>>
>>33563225
>having a bolt design so shitty it can eject a cartridge and not chamber a new round in that stroke
Fuck off Savage shill

My guy, if you pull the bolt ALL THE WAY BACK AND NOT SHORT STROKE it works fine.
>>
>>33563258
Guy in the video did that the last 2 times and it still failed to feed. Meaning shitty bolt catch meaning shitty bolt design
>>
>>33562784
Lol. Show me a factory loaded 45-70 with advertised 3800ft/lbs energy, bc I can show you a 12ga that does
>>
>>33563280
not him but show it to me

I'm pretty sure even 3.5" can't go past 3100
>>
>>33563205

Look at the way he's handling his rifle. Like a weenie. Baby's first bolt action maybe?
>>
>>33563434
I'm not the one who linked that shitty video portraying the shitty rifle. I'm just calling out bad design.

Fuck henrys. Get a marlin or something with a loading gate
>>
>>33563119
>hurr durr AR-15
Fuck off faggot, he wants a 45-70. So help him with that don't recommend something that can't take fuck all game in Alaska that will kill you. Nigger
>>
>>33564003
>a functioning, well built firearm that is properly hand fitted is not worth more money
Like I said, autism.
>>
>>33564994
Marlin guide gun is good if recent. Just make sure you cycle some shots through first to ensure all is set. The materials are far better for that environment than the full size I use
>>
>>33564003

I'm surprised you're not just shouting BUY AN AXIS REEEEEEEE
>>
>>33559690
>protect/hunt big animals (bear, moose)
>pick a pistol caliber

??
get a larger caliber rifle
.270, .308, or something.
>>
>>33563236
Thats the nature of a push feed action dickface. Literally makes zero difference if you operate the firearm properly
>>
>>33567965
>.45-70
>pistol caliber
What?
>>
>>33567965
are you literally retarded?
>>
>>33568242
shhhh....anon he's noguns, he doesn't know. just let him think it.
>>
>>33564998
>we refuse to add a basic feature of every other lever rifle for literally no reason because we know people will still buy it because muh tradition

>>33565245
An Axis has its place, but there's literally no reason to buy a Henry nowadays unless you like their finish.
>>
>>33561570

Nothing is foolproof anon. People also get attacked when they have guns, and either fail to employ them effectively, or they fail to stop the bear.

IMO most people fall victim to the Dunning-Kruger effect when it comes to firearms + bears. How many slugs do you think OP will realistically go through before his move?

Bear encounters also occur in places you don't/won't carry a long gun. Outskirts of town etc.
>>
Honestly OP, if you're still here

the best defense against burrs here in Alas/k/a is being fucking aware of your surroundings and not blundering up on one, or worse, blundering up on it's babbies.

Bear spray, 45-70, and rape whistle are backup.
>>
>>33559690
REEEEEEEEEEE
SEASONALS GIT

That being said unless your actively going in to bear country get yourself a handgun and holster that you will actually use. Proper ammo and shot placement could take care of most wild animals. Moose have been killed with .40 and bears have been killed with 9mm.
