US launches attack on Syria:
https://www.rt.com/news/383782-us-strikes-syria-tomahawaks/

Hey atleast Drumpf can enjoy a day of praise from the nevertrump neocons. Tomorrow theyll bash his cock about how he emboldened Assad to use chem weapons by making the statement about how the Syrian people will decide Assad's future.
>>
It's never happening. Pol is always wrong.
>>
>>33559105
That many Tomahawks, mostly likely precision guided in by drones, means the base is very likely beyond repair.
>>
>>33559114
No, the neocons will start crying about how we don't have boots on the ground yet.

Fucking CNN is already saying that we need to take it further and start putting troops on the ground in Syria

>>
Oh fer fuck's sake...

I guess all the people flipping out at Trump firing missiles at Syria are too young to remember the 90s, when it seemed like Bill Clinton shot a few cruise missiles at some Middle Eastern shithole every few weeks or so to try to get public attention away from one of his innumerable scandals.

This is no big deal, folks.

If I was a strategist for the US, and I was looking at a map for potential allies and available forces for deployment in Syria, my eyes would naturally turn to all the work being done in Iraq.

Would deploying the veterans/freshly trained Iraqi forces and their western support be viable?

Doesn't it make sense to send those guys in after Isis and Syrian government positions at this point?

All I can think of holding them back would be the Iranian influence.

It's not so much a happening anymore.

/sg/ is current under the conclusion that it's fucking nothing. There seems to be minimal causalities even though there is evidence of material destruction.

Seems Trump is only gesturing a warning to Assad while calming down people clamoring for war in order to look decisive.

It was chlorine gas. The rebels were storing it and SAA bombs dispersed the gas but it accidently killed some local fauna.

The whole syrian war has been so weird. It's a civil war that expanded into an insurgent groups invasion of another state, now it's proxied all to hell by everyone short of the Chinese (or maybe they're involved too, but I don't keep up with things). I didn't realize how long something this stupid could go on, even if stuff like this has been happening in Africa for literally decades.

Is there any chance a coalition could do anything to end the war while keeping the regime in power so the country doesn't collapse into ISIS 2 Tigris Boogaloo?

Syria is never going to exist as a stable unified country again. Has gone the way of yugoslavia.

These slavs who keep thinking assad will win completely any day now are ignoring that the conventional phase of the war has been a huge uphill battle for him/iran/russians and still has no end in sight. And even IF they manage to recapture the entire country there's still years of iraq-style sectarian violence/terrorism ahead.

The ONLY solution is to just divide up Syria in a peace agreement. There is no military solution in syria for anyone. Assad can't win, FSA can't win, "moderate rebels" can't win, russia can't win, US can't win, ISIS is batshit crazy, Kurds just want to unify with north Iraq

>Is there any chance a coalition could do anything to end the war while keeping the regime in power

No.

That thinking is more than likely over. So is the idea of fledgling native democracies. Anyone setting boots down has to realise this is a generation of occupation, old empires style.

...and that's potentially a really good thing, because then the future is clearly defined for everyone. The empire is going to set up new states, new infrastructure, they're going to exploit what they can the population is going to learn how to deal with the new order, and one the new borns reach twenty the empire fucks off but in the meantime that means Iraq, syria and whatever the fuck the Kurds want to do stays together, lebanon benefits because for once they aren't being constantly ass raped.

Sort of, there are different kinds of tomahawks for certain targets. For runways, taxiways and tarmacs the military uses tomahawks that have thousands of submunitions like a cluster bomb. For hardened targets they use a tomahawk that has a penetrator rode with a delayed fuse, which means it hits the target, burrows into whatever its targeting then explodes.

It exists in the same way centrifugal force or magnetism exists. They are both manifestations of the real forces just analyzed from a different reference frame. It's the same way with the "identity politics" booeyman. It's just an arbitrary way to analyze politics. Politics simply means people with common working together in common cause. (e.g. a common enemy like feminism and Islam.) Coincidentally, it turns out shared identity is one of the things people prefer because it means higher social capital. Stop listening to talk radio and maybe you will understand.

I'm sure they wanted be be sure to hit all the targets, which if I remember correctly is 2 missiles per target based on SOP for the US. Not to mention the potential for these missiles to have been shot down by Russia air defense, so they fired enough to factor in that and in order to get a high probability of a kill.

>>33560361
So this is what I don't get. If this attack was punitive and does nothing to further our goals (if defeating ISIS really is our goal), we're making an assumption that this wasn't a false flag. But making a rule about what weapons can and cannot be used creates an incentive for false flags though. Chlorine is easy to make and the rebels gained more in this action than Assad. Why do we care if they used chlorine gas? We already have terrorism which is arguably just as bad.
>>
>>33560352

Independent warlord loosely affiliated to Assad who he has no control over.

Things are too messy to tell who exactly is doing what. A lot of rebels actually turned coat and became loyalists last year.
>>
>>33560399
The reason why chemical weapons were banned isn't because they're good at killing but because they're an inhumane way of killing.

If you shoot a rebel's kids they're dead and he'll be pissed and fight back even harder against you. But if you gas them to death and they see their bodies spasm to death in front of them the rebels whose kids are still alive are much less likely to fight you in the future.

Terror doesn't kill the body it kills the spirit.

>>33560458
> we're making an assumption that this wasn't a false flag

Most likely wasn't, the US has guys on hand to check for these things and would only actually attack if they were certain that an attack took place and that they were bombing the right guys.

Based on what evidence? If there was a plane that flew over and dropped bombs on a chemical storage facility, how would that look different than a plane dropping bombs with chemical warheads?

-Russia/Assad says it was a bomb that hit a stockpile of chemical weapons the rebels held

-Trump's folks get mad, parade the pictures of the dead children and such from the attack.

Before this happened Assad was on the upswing and was largely guaranteed to win at least in the long term slog. Some question if it's a false flag because Cui bono.

Personally I think:

-It was done to illustrate American resolve (weakened to lethargic levels with Obama's lead from behind) and unilateralism independent of the UN (Again, same deal. A lot of idiots were shocked at this attack going "wait wait it's against UN law how can this be" not realizing UN law is worth only as much as the participants are willing to give it. It has no legal ramifications or enforcement beyond someone choosing to enforce it).

-It is not and I hope it is not the start of regime change. Rather it's a shot across the bow to remind Assad that a different sheriff is in town and he has to behave. For all the talk of Trump not telegraphing his moves if he wanted to regime change he'd have been better off going at it right away, not a preliminary strike that causes Assad to bolster his defenses with or without Russia.
-It was designed to send a message to Xi Ping that this will happen in North Korea if he doesn't reign in the midget.
-It severely damages the credibility of Moscowian Candidate activists. Some will still believe this.
-A willingness to use force but also an intelligence to not arm jihadists can give us more bargaining power at the negotiating table. If Assad/Russia demanded something at the negotiating table they could just go back to beating up the insurgents.
-It was a test of Russian AA networks for the future.
-It was a reminder to Russia that we are not the cuddlebear Europeans. And it lets them know we are accepting Assad as the lesser of two evils but
>>
>>33561263

And it lets them know we are accepting Assad as the lesser of two evils but there are limits to that tolerance.

Trump limits it to a punitive strike and necessary repercussions/overwhelming counterstrikes if they try anything with our guys in the East and he's smart. Trump lets it slide into regime change and he is an even greater idiot than Bush Jr. because Trump knew Iraq 2 was a mistake and he has the Iraq 2 as an example but is willing to do it all the same.

The only conceivable realistic way that a regime change will work in Syria for the better is if you have a "meet the new boss same as the old boss" with some sort of regime insider who didn't get his hands bloodied becoming the new el presidente with the same dictatorship, same military junta rule and same repressive system but with a few token concessions. The person who thinks you can achieve a stable, fuck, a non genocidal democracy in Syria is someone who is without a doubt the stupidest motherfucker alive who would give the sons of vulcan in the white house Bush Jr. years a run for their money.

Give me the power of the president and I would sooner be able to make peace between a time traveling Nazi Germany and Bibi's Israel than between the factions of Syria. It is up to a law of physical nature that a lebanese or tunisian or even Iraq 2016 democracy is impossible in Syria for the next 10 years.

However

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/06/tillerson-says-coalition-forming-to-target-assad-trump-hearing-military-options.html

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Thursday that “steps are underway” on an international coalition to pressure Bashar Assad from power, as President Trump was being briefed on military options for Syria – though what specific steps the U.S. and its allies might take in response to the latest deadly chemical weapons attack remained unclear.

America’s top diplomat addressed the Syria crisis a day after Trump declared in the Rose Garden that the chemical strike would not be tolerated. Tillerson pointedly said Russia should “consider carefully” its support for the Assad regime, while calling for an international effort to defeat ISIS in Syria, stabilize the country and ultimately work with partners through a political process that leads to Assad leaving power.

Asked if the U.S. would organize a coalition to remove Assad, Tillerson said: “Those steps are underway.”

>Alternatively, introductory treatments of magnetism introduce the Biot–Savart law, which describes the magnetic field associated with an electric current. An observer at rest with respect to a system of static, free charges will see no magnetic field. However, a moving observer looking at the same set of charges does perceive a current, and thus a magnetic field. That is, the magnetic field is simply the electric field, as seen in a moving coordinate system.

The hysterical emotionality with which many Trump supporters are taking a single disappointment gives me not much confidence in them as a long-term political phenomenon. Guys, in life you win some and you lose some. That's just how it goes. Trump was never going to give you 100% of what you wanted 100% of the time. He's going to do things you disagree with sometimes, and he's going to make mistakes. If you expected anything different, then your expectations were not aligned with the reality of how the world works. I'm not defending his decision to bomb Syria. All I'm saying is that it's time for a reality check and time to get off the emotional roller coaster that some people seem to have been on when it's come to politics in the past year. In short, calm down, ditch the emotionality (both the gushing over Trump and the wailing and crying when he disappoints you), get real, and remember that what we support are policies, not people.

I didn't say anyone was tricked. It's likely Trump saw an opening and took it for his own reasons, knowing the media won't contradict him. I care about the facts because the media are known liars, and I care about Trump's possible motivations because he is always multiple steps ahead of everybody and it's instructive.
