Recently, a friend of mine has been itching to pick up an AR15 for a first gun, but he's looking at stupid celebrity branded ones and while I don't know a lot about the AR15 market, $2500 seems obviously way too expensive for a first rifle. I've used M16 and M4 patterns, so I can instruct him in proper operation, but I don't know shit about the civilian market.

if you plan to plink at 100 and farther you might want to look into getting prismatic scope from burris/PA/vortex be sure to primarily consider the reticle. vortex make good 1-4pst that is not most ruggeded or have best glass but its plenty good enough.

I use a regular old combo pistol safe. I just keep it opened at night and the pistol holstered. With decent retention, a child will have a tough time removing a gun from a kydex holster. Also, be sure to lock it up or take it with you in the morning.
