How bad of an idea is a good red dot on your primary SHTF gun versus a magnified optic?
>>
>>33546112
I don't fucking know.
Fuck you.
>>
>>33546146
Fuck you too.
>:(
>>
>>33546112
about as bad as having a gun
>>
>>33546112
>shtf
Do it, it's a great idea. I've always wanted one and it'll already be mounted on a rifle when I pick it up. Thanks OP.
>>
having a nice red dot on your rifle will make it more valuable to the bandits who kill you and steal all your shit. go for it.
>>
>>33546112
Dunno that much about optics, are they all battery powered?
>>
>>33546225
>mot being the bandit
Shtf will be perfect opportunity for ethnic cleansing

>I m p l y i n g
I have a comfy little island I like to camp at/"bug out" to. Don't get me wrong, I'm no "Muh gubmint gonna unleash da zombies on us, better stock up on .22lr and beans" types. I'm just new to guns, really only have experience with irons on a small variety (AR, SKS, etc.).
>>
>>33546241
Most red dots and holographic sights are indeed battery powered.
>>
>shtf
>>
>>33546259
What about solar charged ones, or ones that redirect natural or unnatural light like non battery powered calculators?
>>
>>33546112
Depends on your area/rifle. Heavily wooded area with only a few hundred metres for a sightline? Red dot is fine. Co-witness it with your irons. Plains/longer sightlines? Get an ACOG or something.
>>
>>33546286
I don't know of any solar powered, but there are a couple of unmagnified optics that use fiber optics to pipe ambient light to the reticle and tritium when there isn't.
>>
>>33546321
Holosun has some dual solar/battery powered red dots.
>>
>>33546321
A combo of both would be ideal, charge solar batteries during the daytime, use fiber optics channeling ambient light during that, and use stored power during nighttime.

Sounds expensive as shit but there
>>
Red dots are for encounters 50m and in. Yes, you can use them out to 1000, but they're severely disadvantageous vs magnification.

Dunno why no one ever understands this.
>>
>>33546253
How far would it take you to get to your cozy litte get away if you can not drive there?

kys
>>
>>33546112
Go ahead and do it but you should co-witness it with some good back up irons.
>>
Depends on your eyes more than anything.
I just got a nice red dot, only to find out that I have an astigmatism that makes it too blurry to use, so its worthless to me.
I have no problem with the cross hairs of a scope though, so will be looking for a 1-6x scope soon for my AR.

I'm keeping the red dot to put on the Sten I'm working on. The blurr should be fine for something like that.
>>
>Do you see yourself constantly shooting at 300 yards or more?
Acog.

>Will the threats be within 300 yards?
Red dot

Also I don't see why you'd engage at 300 yards or more rather than breaking contact. An acog is at a disadvantage within 100 yards where most defensive shooting will be. Unless you live in a open country area a red dot is better. An obstruction is gonna mess up your view through an acog.
>>
>>33546112
It's more fair to compare a red dot to iron sights than a magnified optic.
If you need a magnified optic, you need a magnified optic.
If iron sights would work fine, but you'd like them to be better in every way, get a red dot.

If you cant be fucked to carry an extra 2 ounces of batteries then you can just chuck it in the bushes when it runs out you stupid nigger.

i really like my holosun, compared to an eotech its overall less bright and a smaller reticle but i assume that's how they get away with the solar-power and long battery life.
>>
>>33546796
an ACOG is fine for 50 yards and out.
they're built specifically, assuming we're talking about mounting to an AR, to be zeroed at 133 yards with bdc specific to the 5.56 cartridge.

and if you have enough for an ACOG, then you have enough for an RMR to cover the 0 to 50 yard gap, assuming you're to shitty of a shot to use offset irons

Batteries on decent optics last for years, literally. Just be sure to have it on a quick release mount or cowitness it with iron sights, otherwise failure would leave you without a way to aim.

depends on where you live senpai

Most red dots are battery powered, but quality ones have run times of 3-5 years or longer.

It's a non issue
