Conventionally,
Our focus was being able to project force against communism, defend Europe, and if need be, retake it.
So we interpreted that to a large carrier fleet and air force.
There's was simply rolling across Europe and holding it, so they focused on on offensive ground force and their navy and air force focused on area denial and interception.
Their doctrine and designs are a lot less "flexible" and is basically only good for conventional fulda gap tier warfare.

They were no worse BTFO in Afghanistan than we (the US) were in vietnam. Both had a crazy high K/D and when both pulled out of the country they left behind a puppet government they installed, which both failed within a few years.

So some good examples on how this translates into design.

Their armor focused on mobility and firepower, as well as being cost and logistically effective, sacrificing ergonomics for ease of manufacture. Not to mention heavy emphasis on being amphibious.
Another big thing was range, with area denial you would obviously want to out range them so you could take them out before they even got close and that's why their ships and naval interceptors were equipped with with long range ASMs, compared to more versatile cruise missiles. A shining example is the Kuznetsov, while an unnecessary project, was decked out with ASMs and AA. The Kuznetsov mainly carried aircraft and had little to no projection capabilities, I mean, why would you need to project force when the only foreseeable large scale conflict is right next door? Another note is that they call it an "aircraft cruiser", not a carrier.
