Hey /k anyone here do competition shooting, specifically pistol competitions. I'd like to get into it but I don't know of any places near me (Florida, 239 area) also suggestions for for a pistol for competition, i was thinking about getting like a USP but I'm not sure
>>
>>33520603
1911
>>
>>33520603
USP's, even competition minded ones like the USP elite and expert, aren't very popular comp guns due to their inability to accessorize (in comparison to glock's, 1911's, and CZ's), price, and popularity. USP's are generally more popular as utilitarian/duty guns, and if you want to compete with one, you would be better off finding a range than hosts defensive pistol league matches or something similar. Its going to be kind of a drive for you, but if you ever find yourself near Frostproof FL, Universal Shooting Academy hosts DPL matches at the end of every month. Its a good way to shoot your CCW or duty gun without getting BTFO'd by some dude with a CZ open class gun with one of those polyester shirts with every manufacturer's logo on them.
>>
>>33520693
So like 9mm Glock would be best and I'll keep that in mind about Frostproof
>>
>>33520603
I used to shoot a USP .40 in USPSA, it works well but like >>33520693
Said not many aftermarket options. I use a Glock 35 now that I have converted to 9mm. Glocks are a great entrance mid level competition guns because of the ease of maintenance and aftermarket options. With a gun chambered in .40 you can get 9mm parts for it allowing you to jump in and out of Major/minor classes
>>
>>33520693
The only accessories you need is a trigger and sights.
>>
>>33520794
I wouldn't say its the "best", glocks just have retard levels of aftermarket support. You could arguably take a glock 19 and turn it into a Roland Special, or take a 17 or 34 and turn them into something that would eclipse or exceed the capabilities of a competition USP. You have to remember, the USP is a relatively old pistol, which has a strong, yet relatively small following. HK's improvements in handguns came in the form of new handguns such as the P2000, P30, and VP9, whereas the Glock generational advancements are just that: improvements over the same basic design.

If you're set on a gun for purely competition fun, then yes, glocks, 1911's and CZ's are going to take you farther than a USP as far as options go. That being said, if you just happen to love HK's and the USP, then go for it. Just realize that its going to be more expensive to modify and with less aftermarket to choose from.
>>
>>33520840
Is 9mm and .40 like the standard caliber?
>>33520908
I have a 19 already but it's stock so maybe I'll take some of the money I was saving for another pistol and spend it on upgrading

You don't get to tell the consumer what changes to his gun he's limited to make, faggot. If OP wants a go full retard and make a RS out of his USP like pic related he can. Its just going to cost a lot more than what would comparable to more common handguns.
>>
>>33520953
>You don't get to tell the consumer what changes to his gun he's limited to make, faggot.
>> limited to make

Now where did I do that? I just simply told OP he doesn't NEED to go crazy. You are the faggot who doesn't like having his contrived and unnecessary bullshit smashed down.
>>
>>33520937
Roy from Weapon Outfitters wrote some good articles of the merits of turning a G19 into "a welfare open gun" with an RMR and compensator. They're not the prettiest thing to look at, but in terms of putting rounds on target quickly, they're hard to beat. This is most evident when handed to inexperienced shooters.

Obviously all the modifications in the world cant replace practice, but you should read some about these guns before spending money. You also need to figure out what kind of competitions you're going to be doing, as each league will have different rules on what you can have in or on the gun. One of the reasons why I like the Universal Shooting Academy's rules for DPL is that each shooter is grouped based on carry method, rather than the gun.
>>
>>33520953
That's sexy af, I'll look into doing something like that but I feel like it's just Gonna be a pain in the ass
>>33521011
I think your reply came off as an asshole because the wording just like >>33520642
>>
>>33521011
>Now where did I do that?

Did you even read your post?
>>33520896
>>33520896
>>33520896

This implies that other modifications, such as those done to recoil springs, grips, weight reduction/weight addition modifications are superfluous.

Again, OP didn't state what kind of competing he wants to do, and therefore I'm trying to guide him to a gun that can offer the most versatility. If guy wants to take his g19 with just a trigger and sight swap and shoot against guys with raced out g34's and 2011's he's going to get his shit pushed in.

This is the last (you) I'm giving you.
>>
>>33521047
I'll have to find that article, any websites or books I can read on the different variations of competitions or is it just learnt from experience?
>>
>>33520603

This is what you do
>disregard USP
>acquire P30L
>convert to light LEM
>stomp on nerds that have souped up Glocks, Tangfoglios and 1911s
>>
>>33521227
If you follow the Weapon Outfitters Instagram page, he posts a lot of blog shit about modifying the G19 on there, and sometimes links to helpful websites confirming his statements. Other than that, some really great shooters like Mike Seeklander, JJ Ricaza, Grandpa Jerry, all have some kind of web presence whether it be YouTube or social media, that can offer good shooting tips. From there, you can apply these tips and learn for yourself through competition. Again, I shill for the DPL stuff because involves more CCW type stuff and I get to use the shit I carry everyday. Its a good place to start and some of the people that I started doing it with have graduated to building or buying race guns and now compete in the more formal leagues.

TL;DR, find a competition that will cater to what guns you already have, and if you like it enough to compete more seriously, get a serious comp. gun then.
>>
>>33521225
>Did you even read your post?

Yes, where did I tell OP what he could and couldn't do. Please show me.

Glock would be a good beginner gun. Keep in mind, I think wih DA/SA guns, you may be required to start on DA, so that will slow you down. If you go HK, LEM would be best or go single action only. I hear CZs are also popular.

Most gun champions shoot a version 2011s in 9mm or .40 that cost thousands of dollars though. If you want to be highly competitive, be prepared to go that route eventually. In the end, it's the shooter not the gun, but I'm just telling you what the facts are.
>>
>>33522110
Almost all 2011's are chambered in .38 Super for the compensator performance.
>>
>>33520603
Glock 17 or 34 is your best bet.

You are most likely never going to shoot anything but production class.

>>
>>33525625
Can't fault you for taste sir, may the credit gods have mercy on your soul.

Honestly my next required purchase is an aftermarket P30L threaded 5" bbl (or actually 2 of 'em) - but they are literally unobtainium for the last year straight.
>>
>>33525668
Because I like 40, despite current groupthink it's hot and high energy in an efficient package, does everything right, even the ball rounds are naturally truncated, quite the contender round
>>
>>33525727
Doesn't do anything +p won't. I'm more concerned about your choice of LEM. Is there something wrong with the P30 hammer? How is it compared to USP?
>>
>>33525800
LEM is the best trigger system ever designed for defense/fighting pistols. Rather than crudely attempt to articulate the strengths and advantages, I'll let the pros do it for me.
I'm not as articulate or experienced.

http://pistol-training.com/archives/8549

Not interested in caliber wars but physics is measurable and real data pool, just because gunfights are one off, unique and dynamic to the point of being anecdotal doesn't mean deeper, wider crush cavities with more tissue displacement isn't a measurable advantage. If you read the FBI report with some context and clarity they basically admit to this. Yes shot placement is still king, yes I carry 9x19, not trying to fight. But a P30L LEM 40 with some heavy for caliber loads is really appealing to fight the wave of diabetic fatty criminals the country is currently being flooded with.
>>
>>33525668

Just for posterity - If I got a HK45 it would be LEM too, I omitted that in the previous response

>>
The USP double spring "recoil reduction" system makes the gun slower for real competition shooting. Follow up shots take too long. Get something 1911 or CZ75 based.
>>
>>33520603
If you want to get into IDPA the Glock 34 is by far the most popular gun in that sport. I don't know about the other competition types, but I'd be really surprised if the G34 didn't have a commanding presence in all the other non-1911 oriented competitions.

How is the P226 as a comp gun? I had my eyes on one of them next, I really like my P320C. What are some basics to practice for going into comp or wanting to learn the fundamentals? Just that? Breathing, trigger control, grip, etc? Shooting speed? Grouping?
