Nogunz here moving out of mommy and daddy's house in one week. In need a small handgun that's reliable and easy to maintain for a beginner. I'm also trying not to spend more than $800, and I'd prefer to get something new, not used, so I'm looking at pic related right now.

What would you get if you had nothing and needed a new handgun for under $800?
>>
>>33518132
Glock 19.
>>
>>33518132

Are you going to carry it or will it be strictly for home defense and range trips?
Are you 21 and able to buy a handgun or underage thus needing it to be a long gun?

Glock 17 is good, Glock 19 is a bit more compact.
Ruger SR9 that's pictured isn't bad.

The Ruger LCR next to it is also good, though snub nosed revolvers aren't easy for newbies, you'd do yourself a disservice. If you want that revolver, I'd suggest the 3 inch X model, has a longer sight radius, a bigger grip, and an exposed hammer; being able to cock your hammer helps with shooting.
It's commonly available in .38 Special, but if you can get it in 9mm that's better for you because ammo is much cheaper.

>>
>>33518210
For home defense and range trips, I would suggest a full sized pistol, like a Glock 17, Beretta 92A1, M&P 9, or FNX9.

Go to a store and handle each, see how it feels.
If your pistol is going to be your home defense gun, I would recommend not just extended magazines (20 or 30 round ones, don't get cheap knockoffs, buy the company's own magazines or high quality aftermarket ones), but also that you fit a light on the front of it.

Also get electronic hearing protection, it protects your ears if you have to shoot your gun indoors in a home defense situation, on top of being good for the range. Spend the rest on decent plinking ammo and a good box of hollowpoints.

Finally, a pistol works, but I think that some day you should invest in a shotgun or rifle, it's good to have, and also it's fun.
>>

lancaster county. I know some people who go to shooting ranges in harrisburg and that's where they get ammo.
>>
With $800 as your budget, you've got a lot of options. If I were you, and I wasn't planning on carrying, I would look for a used full size fnx in either .45 or 9mm. Longer sight radius will give you better accuracy, and common caliber will mean you can find ammo anywhere to practice with. With the money you save on the pistol you can get yourself a quality light to mount on the rail, and refreshed night sights if the ones you get are dim.

You'd have a pretty ideal range/hd pistol. If your planning on carrying in the future, just get a used glock 19 and do the same thing.
>>
Lower your power levels tards. OP just asked what (you) would get if you had $800 and no funs. Just tell him what you would buy and stfu. You fucking autists don't have to try to learn him the ways of the force.

And the answer is, of course, Glock 19.

Don't even like glocks and this is a good answer.

If you really love revolvers or know you have a hard on for metal frames or are definitely planning to conceal carry it might be worth looking at other options, but if you don't know what you want besides "a gun" then a glock is the place to start.

You put the bullets in, you pull the trigger, they come out. Not a lot to go wrong.

id stick with striker fired for now, theyre a bit easier to use, lighter, cheaper, and everybody is making them. Save an extra hundred or so dollars for a proper safe, holster or accessories. You can usually find good choices in the police trade in/used sections most gun stores have

>tfw missed out on a used G20 with Zen trigger for $530
>>
>>33518132
I'd say see if you can get a CZ P-07, it's the compact version of the CZ P-09, which, if it's anything like that, it's reliable to a fault, even with shitty Tulammo 9mm, easy to disassemble, simply pull the slide back a little and knock a pin out, slides forward bam done. Magazine capacity is 15 rounds for the 9mm version, as well, 12 rounds for the 40 S&W version if you want that for some god-awful reason. MSRP's 510-524 dollars, too, so it's within your budget.

If it's anything like its big brother? Go for it.

Look at a Canik 55 TP9

For $350, you get 2 17 round mags, a case, a holster, cleaning tools and a lock. Better than a Glock at half the price.
>>
I'd go for a sig 320 in 9mm. Leaves some budget leftover for a light, bonus mags, or ammo.

I'd definitely stick with 9mm for now (cheap and low enough recoil you can try not to develop a flinch).

I don't think 'dedicated carry' was on your list, so get a full size. The weight will help you manage recoil.

What matters is how you will grip the pistol and pull the trigger. So, while I like the p320 there are 5+ very common pistols that meet your needs, no brand is perfect and most are good. Go finger fuck a dozen guns at your lgs.

If you don't already shoot, watch some YouTube videos on grip and trigger pull. It isn't as intuitive as you'd expect. Once you have an idea of grip and trigger pull, go finger those guns. Take home the one that feels best.

Oh, skip the revolver as a first gun.

Only possible explanation right?

Also, finger, not the plural fingers. So the curve of the trigger results in a different distance between the guard and the bottom of the trigger when pulled. As the trigger resets it can pinch a trigger finger that is low on the trigger.

Only the first pistol I bought does this, but nothing about it fits my hand right. My wife however loves it and has no issues.

$800's plenty of budget. Consider an AR-15 if you're not going to conceal carry stuff. If committed to pistols, could probably get some Canik or EAA/Tanfoglio import *and* a cheap AR-15 for $800, check grabagun and slickguns.

If sticking with the pistol only, for some reason, I'd go with either a P320 (for plenty of ammo on tap) or a P938 (for concealability).
>>

Ruger fanboi re-reporting.

CZ is an amazing pistol as well.

Berreta PX4

Another great pistol, with a recoil reduction design that actually works.

Smith and wesson M&P have very lousy triggers, You had better try one first if you are going to consider one.

HK and Sig are expensive for the sake of being Expensive. If you shoot it well, there's no reason not to get one, but I don't see any major advantage over american guns. Coming from someone who recently purchased a Glock 19....

Glock knuckle
Erratic ejection
Magazine wobble if you buy Gen 3
Have fun finding Gen 3 Mags
Hard to shoot

Glock 19 isn't a pick up and aim gun. The trigger is awful, like shooting a nerf gun. Also, it's so fucking light, your support hand becomes your dominant hand, if you don't want to shoot low and to the left all of the time. Just my 2 cents after purchasing one...
>>
>>33529239

Oh, I also forgot, weak slide spring, so sometimes gun will go into battery after slamming a mag into the well. Glocks are the most overrated guns.

Go to a gun store and finger fuck every handgun they have within your budget. If they won't let you go find another gun store. When you find one that you feel absolutely fits you like a glove ask if they have a range to try one out. Failing that, check your local ranges and see if they have one to rent. Go there and put a box of ammunition through it. Still feel like it was made for you? If so, buy that gun. Buy it in a common caliber that you can afford a lot of (obvious choices would be 9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP or .357/.38).
