Is their any real defense against nuclear weapons? I've heard of things like, "Just shoot them down," but wouldn't that leave all the radiation and debris to fall wherever is under the nuke.
Say the North Korea launches a nuke at Tokyo, Japan tomorrow, if the Japanese/Americans were to shoot down over northern Japan, wouldn't it make that area uninhabitable?
Or is their a way to completely destroy a nuclear weapon that is en route to a location? I know it would've never been done before, but theoretically could a military power do that? It seems like that would be the only way to prevent casualties.

Hole in ground and about one foot of dirt. In most cases nuclear weapons only have a direct reach on five miles or so, your piss city may get one or two in the downtown district but mom and dad's house in the suburbs will probably only have fallout and supply issues. Nuclear war is not only survivable but is winnable. Would help to have a prepared population with basic shelters and supplies and an early warning system for civilians.

If any hostile launch is detected from North Korea, it's going to be shot down before it reaches Japan at all.
But anyway, the only defense against a nuclear barrage is to try to shoot them down and bunker in.

It wouldn't necessarily explode if you shot it down. They work with carefully timed and directly blasts to start the fission process.

>real defense
Deter them from being used in the first place

The bomb and the area around where it fell would have some radiation leakage. You need a very precise and controlled detonation for a nuclear blast. As long as you can hit it, the worst case scenario is turning it into a dirty bomb. Which means it would explode as a conventional missile would but it'd sling radioactive material all over, but it wouldn't be a nuclear explosion.

The largest ICBM currently operational as far as we know is an American B-83. An airburst from that would yeild a blast radius of about 8km or 5ish miles with a burn radius of about 14-15km or 10ish miles. The real issue is if the burst is low enough you get massive fallout cones. Those can be hard to predict and completely devastating. Your personal best defense against a nuclear blast is to live at least 20-30 miles from a large city, military base, or government center and to keep a commercial respirator, goggles, and paint suit in your house. The main danger from fallout is radioactive dust so as long as you are able to keep that outside your body you will be fine. Also as soon as you hear any news of a blast in your vicinity immediately fill all available vessels in your house with water (tub, sink, jugs, etc) as that is the most valuable commodity that will be contaminated by the blast. Also no matter what part of the US you live in you will need cold weather gear as any large volume of nuclear blasts will cause rapid climate change. Keep all this in mind and you may survive.
tl;dr
>Live 30miles from a possible target
>Keep a dustmask/goggles/suit in your house
>Immediately horde water after a blast

>no one is mentioning nuclear plants

You guys are missing the forest through the trees. Nukes are bad but a few good rains will wash away nuclear ash and the worst radiation is gone in about 24 to 48 hours. Nuclear power plants will ruin the earth for long after you and several generations are long gone.

Reminder, no one in their right mind lives in Chernobyl or Fukashima and they probably won't for hundreds of years. Keep in mind these are plants where mankind intervened and stopped the WORST from happening. Imagine unchecked nuclear plant disasters happening all over the planet.

Good luck with your dust mask faggots.

This is 100% incorrect.

A single uncontained meltdown would still cause less deaths and disease than the CO2 saved by that nuclear installation. Checkmate greenfags.

Safe nuke plants (thorium) and fusion are the future - not fusion-based renewables.
