Shotgun.

Semi auto if you can afford it, pump if you can't.

Use #4 buck and it's effectively like magdumping a 30 round magazine of .22LR with every pull of the trigger.

Knife on your body at all times. Use a 9mm with hi capacity. Make sure you bring it with you in your vehicle because you never know when many different cultures will jump you at one time

buy a kimber 45 and get chicken and watermelon just in case they didn't stop at piggly wiggly before robbing you

A Maverick 88 loaded with #4 birdshot so you don't send too much shot through your roommates' walls, and a Roger LCR in .357 Magnum for your nightstand gun. Problem solved.

Springfield Saint AR with some Lancer/MagPul mags and nice Hornady defensive 5.56x45mm ammo, along with a whole bunch of Golden Tiger 5.56x45mm ammo (M193 ball sold commercially) for training.

Get some electronic hearing protection (it protects your ears while letting you hear perfectly, good if you ever need to shoot indoors), a bandolier or vest for holding mags to throw on easily.
Also shooting goggles and some cleaning supplies are in order, CLP and Ballistol is good stuff.

Then at later time; save up for a pistol in 9mm Luger, something nice like a Glock 17, FN FNX, Beretta 92A1 or whatever (avoid Remington).

not really, unlike M855 it tumbles quite effectively. And compared to fancier heavier weight bullets it sucks at barrier penetration. So OP will have to worry (less) about what happens after when the bullet goes through the bad guy.
