Someone once told me you could replace all the rifles the soldiers had in WW1 with spears and the casualties and war would still be the same is this true?
>>
>>33496443
no
>>
>>33496443
No, that's fucking retarded, the whole reason WW1 was such a fucking shitshow is because technology significantly outpaced tactics.
>>
>>33496443
THE WORLD WAS GOING TO ROLL ME
>>
that's just stupid
>>
>>33496443
While it's true that small arms accounted for less casualties than artillery, machine guns, and disease; taking it to that extreme is pretty fucking stupid.
>>
>>33496443
yes. Because ultimately most of WW1 was defined by its tactics or lack thereof
>>
Well, marching into machine gun fire with a spear would have a similar effect to doing it with a rifle so I see where they are coming from. Realistically most casualties were Artillery, it's more the ability to industrialise the logistics (tinned food) to keep an army fed in the field of that size that lead to the casualty figures being so large.

I assume their point was that the vast majority of casualties where from indirect support fire and most of all Artillery. It's a bit of a hyperbolic way of putting it but yes the casualty rate would probably be fairly negligibly different.

Its a bit too dramatic of a statement but I understand what they meant. All Quiet On the Western Front and Storm of Steel both talk about going on trench raids and leaving the rifle behind. They'd take just their shovel and a shit ton of grenades. Remarque also talks about how bayonets get stuck in guys if you don't go for the belly. Sorta makes sense considering the need for indirect fire.

In the Starship Troopers book, Heinlein envisioned future warriors just carrying grenades and not having any guns.

Wait, did he really write that in? I've never read the book, but did they really only use grenades?

From what I remember, grenades also include RPGs.

Handheld flamethrowers, grenades, and mini nukes. Just no conventional directfire ballistic weapons.
