Well there was the MP38 and MP40 coming from the years of creation, MP5 was created in 1964 so the 5 is odd.

MP7 was designed in 1999 but I assume it follows from MP5.

But where does the 5 come from? It follows 40 but isn't tied to a year. Where is the MP6? Or the MP8?

The HK54 was a prototype for the MP5, the MP5 is HK's own designation.

The "mp" is just "machinenpistole". For instance, the UZI was designated mp2 by the German government. HK doesn't name them that.

The German government decided to adopt those weapons with those designations. I can't speak for why the German government would do so but for the US government the M-x designation is used for much more than just firearms. So there is no clear lineage from M1 to M16 service rifles with every iteration of M2-M15 being a rifle.

The MP2 is a German license-produced Uzi. They used to equip tank crews with them until they adopted the MP7. The M1 Thompson is the MP1 iirc, but I don't know what the MP3 and MP4 were.

The SMG-2, presumably. It was originally designed for the US Navy, but they didn't want it because the MP5N was more attractive. In the end HK delivered about 200 of them, but they never disclosed to whom, so maybe it was a German unit who used it under the MP6 designation.
