my S&B is 2.4 pounds and my vortex is 2.9 pounds. compared with the rifles they're on I really don't notice much of a difference...

I'm not trying to parrot shit here but, from a guy who's done a lot of backpacking and wondering out in the bush, ounces are pounds when you have to carry it through rough terrain.
If you're benching and resting and range shooting, by all means load her up. If you've gotta pack it, cut weight where you can or get manly legs. I've heard M1A have some vicious recoil on optics though so bulletproof is worth something in this case.
