Hello /k/! I just passed the hunting exam and sent a license application to the police for a Tikka 595.

I have no clue about scopes though. Got any tips for the purpose of stalking deer and the occasional moose/boar hunt? Also, if any kind soul want to write a crash-course on scopes, it would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Anything $250+ should be good.
Where are you shooting and at what distances typically?
>>
>>33468910
The locations vary frequently from tight forests to open fields. I wouldn't shoot an animal that is more than 100 meters (109 yards according to google) away from me due to my inexperience.
>>
>>33468892
I was in your shoes a couple of months back.

I would suggest a Vortex scope (I personally own a Diamondback and it's a great beginner scope depending on your price range) or any other that suits you that has easy to use and adjust turrets, 3-12 variable zoom etc.

As far as a crash-course goes that's beyond my knowledge as i am inexperienced as well, however i would suggest watching videos/reading about zeroing scopes and adjusting for wind and elevation, shooting from different heights and such. Plenty of resources online and on youtube. If possible get someone knowledgeable to show you and teach you everything irl. Take a "beginner sniper" course if they are being offered.

For hunting i would suggest zeroing your rifle at 50 meters, and the fact that you wouldn't even attempt to shoot animals that are further than 100m is admirable considering where i'm at even experienced hunters don't do this, and the ones that do usually miss due to their hubris.

Hope this helps man

Not to mention, get as much range time with the rifle as you can. Idk how experienced you are shooting it but it takes some time to get everything where you want it to be. Your stance, trigger pull, breathing etc.

If you have an long range range nearby i would suggest going there and asking perhaps an employee to help you with the basics or even with sighting in your scope. Once it's sighted in (at 50m) try shooting at different distances to see what adjustments you need to make (aiming lower or higher) when shooting at 25m, 75m, and 100m.

I'm assuming you're canadian so there should be plenty of hunters to get acquainted with and learn from

Thank you! Yeah, I'll see if I can get some help with this irl too. Pretty hard though since im the only one in my family who has an interest for hunting, and I feel like im bothering people if I ask them about these things.

Any reason why I should zero my rifle at 50m? Not that I have a problem with it, but im just curious.

>zero my rifle at 50m
http://www.totalsurvivalist.com/2013/05/why-50-meter-zero.html

This explains it well.

Same here komrade, i'm the first in my family to show interest in hunting and actually purchase firearms (possibly due to the fact i was born during the war of independence and wasn't traumatized by guns).

I've learned most of my marksmanship skills through courses and talking to people that know more than I do. Going to the range is probably your best bet of meeting someone who can help you

This is really helpful, I'll check some youtube videos and read that article. Thanks for helping me, and good luck with your future hunts!

This is extremely helpful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTSBcNgGMNo

And no worries, i've had the exact same questions you do, so if you want to know anything else ask away, chances are i've researched it recently.

Otherwise, good luck and happy hunting pal

I consider this video a must watch for all aspiring marksmen:

A rare case of clapistanians actually knowing what they're talking about.

make sure you take into account what time you're going to be hunting at as well. Early morning and evenings you would benefit from having a larger diameter objective lens.
>>
>>33469154
>>33469212
Looking at the videos right now, and man are they full of useful information!

>>33469236
Since I'll be stalking deer most of the time I'll be out and about an hour or so before sunrise until the same after sunset. I read somewhere that a 50-56 diameter objective lens would help letting more light in so that I can stay out longer and still be able to see what I need. A 56 would be quite big and clumsy right? WIll a 50 suffice?

>scopes
general rule is buy nice or buy twice. i'm not big into the ARG philosophy of needing a gucci rig to shoot well, but it does pay off to get a high-end scope. vortex, leupold, bushnell, and nikon are good entry-level scopes.
consider the ranges that you'll shoot. if your shots are <100yards, you probably won't need a scope with some insane zoom or parallax compensation.

>stalking
be aware of the wind, walk slow, and do slow movements when getting ready to take a shot. Ungulates don't have the greatest eyesight, but shouldering your rifle too quickly can give you away
>>

What is in a hunting exam? We dont have them where i am from.
>>
>>33469741
Probably things like species, dates when you can legally hunt, calibre power minimums, et cetera. Basically shit that ensures that people don't go around shooting endangered species or run around shooting animals during breeding season.
>>
>>33469272
50 should be good but I think a larger objective also means a larger field of view.
>>
>>33469780
Those are the exact things I'm learning right now as I am getting my hunting exam.
I got the feeling that the OP is a fellow Swedistani.
What everyone tells me is buy a cheap/used rifle and spend bigly on the scope to make sure it won't get yanked out of place from the recoil. And that there's no need to go balls out on zoom, that you don't need like 9 or 12x.
>>
>>33471293
The exams are probably pretty similar in all of nordics, what I described was what I went through in funland.

Good advice all in all, but I'd recommend spending some extra on the rifle. You probably won't buy many, so you might as well spend a bit more and get yourself one that you'll really like.

Most guys do a 100 yard (30.48m)zero. Adjusting your scope to whatever you're shooting at is then adjusted to the clicks on your scope. Fuck that 50m nonsense. Deer 200 yards away? up four clicks (1/4 MOA per click adjustments for a 100 yard zero) moose 300 yards away? up 8 clicks:

Pick a size round, train, and pick your shots. Put the game down humanly.

Vortex and Nikon are two trustworthy brands which have solid entry level scopes if that's what you're after. Meopta is a solid brand which punches above its weight if you want a mid range scope. ive always liked simple 3-9x40 scopes
